2020 - Reinventing Our Story • JANET BURTON • Interim Executive Director WHAT SUSTAINS YOU? As I write this message, we are eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted and transformed Gift of Life. In mid-March, schools closed, hospitals no longer allowed outside visitors, and state and local ordinances closed Gift of Life’s office building and led to the cancellation of GOSEEDO, the organization’s largest annual fundraising event. School presentations scheduled in Kansas City and in St. Louis, where the Life Savers program had recently expanded, were cancelled just as momentum and new high school relationships were being formed. We were forced to find new ways to educate students about organ, eye and tissue donation and provide mentoring support and encouragement to transplant patients. Gift of Life’s staff reacted quickly, pivoting to working from home, embracing technology and working creatively and resiliently. But, as the cover of our newsletter illustrates, it was you – our contributors – who sustained us. We are grateful for your support this year that enabled us to achieve the following: • The GIVE TO LIVE fundraising campaign was created to replace GOSEEDO and raised more than $138,000. TRANSPLANT MENTORS • ANDY DONNELLY • Translpant Mentors Program Manager Transplant Mentors Extend Support D uring the early phases of COVID-19, the world of transplant was turned upside down. Many transplant programs were put on hold as the virus became a major health crisis. The pandemic was an opportunity to reevaluate the Transplant Mentors pro- gram. We asked, “Why can’t we support: patients, caregivers and living donors in other parts of the country?” Our goal then be- came securing thirty transplant hospitals that would agree to refer: patients, caregivers, or living donors to our program for support and encouragement. The team developed an action plan plus tracking methods to ensure the program will be manageable, as well as successful. Thirty- four hospitals listed below (including four in Kansas City) have agreed to refer patients to the Transplant Mentors program. In November, we conducted a virtual training for our volunteer Transplant Mentors. The ability to connect patients with a mentor by using technology offers more individuals the support they need. * As the trend towards transplants continues to rise, Gift of Life is prepared to support and encourage patients as they face their new unknown journey. DID YOU KNOW? • More to the story While 95% of Americans are in favor of being a donor, only 56% are registered organ donors. African Americans make up 28% of the total candidates currently waiting for a transplant, while they comprise 12.5% of organ donors in 2019. A patient’s family may be charged for final life-saving efforts, but costs related to organ donation are covered by the transplant recipient. 11,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are waiting for an organ transplant. Donation is consistent with the beliefs of most major religions. If anyone is uncertain, he or she should talk with a member of the faith’s clergy. A traditional burial ceremony is still an option when a Native American is a donor. LatinX make up 20% of all the people waiting for an organ transplant.
