Joshua Uhrig has become the first trainee in Google Classroom Reading M to completely “TABE out” of Job Corps’ Reading requirement. You need to get a score of 576, and he scored 578, on what was his third test. For those who know Joshua, this was just another one of his steps on the pathway to success in life that he has been following here on Treasure Island. When he enrolled in Job Corps in July of 2019, he entered Basic Culinary under Chef Valdet, and was placed in Miss Lily An’s Reading 2*class. After the pandemic caused classes to become virtual and online, reading students were shifted to four different Google Classrooms, with Joshua now being in Mr. Chance’s Reading M class. Although almost one year after his previous test, by scoring so high on the D Level, Joshua clearly demonstrated his ability to not only understand the texts and the multiple choice answer for- mat, but he also showed his skill in utilizing successful test taking techniques and strategies. Joshua had actively participated in Mr. Chance’s Live Lessons in Google Classroom, as well as in counseling workshops, and despite changes in his life, was always actively involved and concerned about his progress in his trade. Talkative, friendly, helpful and well liked, Chef Valdet noted, “He works very hard,” and was Student of the Week. In addition to the stresses and strains of daily living, the health crisis of 2020 -2021 has brought changes and challenges to everyone in the world today. But Joshua, with his friendly manner, engaging speech and hard working spirit, has shown that with determination and effort, he will contin- ue to be successful his pathway to a ca- reer. --John W. Various representatives from TI joined including many students, Ca- reer Transition Specialists, Business Community Liaison and various staff from the Culinary department. Throughout the workshop we were shown that our culinary students have the potential to make around $6,000 to $10,000 a month through working for the SIU. In order to qualify for the program, you must have a transportation worker identification credential (TWIC), receipt of fees for your Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), ServSafe Management Level Certification, passport, and be 18 years of age or older. According to one of the representatives of SIU, with this rare opportunity to have your living and food expenses paid for you could potentially save around $100,000 in three years if you save half of your money earned while at sea. Our team at Treasure Island is eager to send more of our students to this program so that they can achieve the highest quality of life and independence possible. Case in point, one of our previous trainees was able to save to buy a home and afford traveling the world because of their employment with SIU. TR EASURE IS LAN D JOB C ORPS C EN TER • W EEK LY UPDA TE 01/22/2021 Keep Your Eyes On The Prize Keep your eye on the prize! Even though things are still different for us in today’s world, there are still things we need to look forward to in life. Getting back to the normal life we used to know is challenging, but it will happen eventually! Until then, lets do things that will help us feel better about ourselves! There will always be things we want in life, some are just a passing through, others are real desires or prizes. When you come across one of those prizes, don't let it slip away. Keep it in focus, remembering what you want and why, so you can continue to move toward it step by step. That is the es- sence of keeping your eyes on the prize. If there is something you really want, keep it in your thoughts. We often come up with great goals when feeling optimistic and strong, but then as life moves on, we get caught up in our rou- tines and schedules. Suddenly a strong want or goal slips away. The tips below are designed to help keep your goals in front of you. If you see your goals on a regular basis, you are more likely to be motivated to work on them. As you consistently work on them, you will be moving closer and closer to accomplishment. Write your goal up and post them where you can see them daily: Commit to reading over your goals daily. • Every time you accomplish something pertaining to getting you closer to your goals, check it off your list. • Stay motivated. It will be hard at times, but keep at it. Don’t lose focus! • Keep positive people around who share the same vision you have. That will help you strive even harder to get where you need to be! Once you achieve it! You will believe in it! Keep your eye on the prize! ~Latonya Jackson, Social Development Manager! (800) 733-JOBS • http://treasureisland.jobcorps.gov 4
ADAMS FAMILY FABLES January 22, 2021 Trading up No Place Like Home Miami Advanced Electrical graduate Jaime Kahn has found him- self right at home (literally) with his new job at Ingredion in Highland, Indiana. Jaime works as an operator/mechanic and recently saved enough money to buy his first home in Erie. Jaime enrolled into Mi- ami's Advanced Training program in October 2019 and completed in February 2020. He relocated to Indiana where he worked with Career Transition Specialist Alexander Chenaut to find his current job. Jaime has worked fulltime with Ingredion for 6 months, is a member of the Machinists Union and earns $24 an hour! Big thanks to Mr. Chenault for helping Jaime find his way home! Around the World in 30 Days When you can't bring the students to recreational trips, why not bring recreational trips to the students? That's the idea behind New Hampshire Evening and Programs Specialist Troy Borruso's virtual tours this month. The first part of the tour featured athletic fields and stadiums around the world. Among these was an up-close tour of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, Spain. This is the home of the world- famous soccer team, Real Madrid. Students enjoyed touring the stadium's magnificent architecture along la Castellana, along with the inside seating rows. License for Success Keystone graduates Brianna Rinehart and Joseph Davella are driv- ing their careers forward in some classy new rides. CNA graduate Bri- anna (pictured here with a special guest) picked up her new car after transferring to the Advanced LPN program at the Cassadaga Center in August. Joseph was able to purchase his dream car after landing a job with Techno Bloc Corp. in Penn Argyl. Joseph graduated from Key- stone's Material Handling program last March.
