Dear Parents/ Caregivers
Kia Ora, Malo e Lelei, Talofa, Greetings
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
There is a direct correlation between school attendance and academic achievement. Every lesson your child misses is
a lost opportunity to learn and achieve. Furthermore, the longer they are absent from school the more difficult to catch
up, which creates anxiety and stress.
While JPC has overall excellent student attendance there are increasing numbers of senior students who are “picking
and choosing” when they come to school and for what classes. This is not only causing them educational disadvantage
it is unfair on their teachers who work so hard on on their behalf. It would be helpful if you would reinforce to your child
the importance of being at school every day and for all five classes.
WHANAU SUPPORT GROUP
Just a “heads up” the WSG will be holding a hui shortly and will invite existing and new members to join. This is an
excellent way to support the College on its bi cultural journey and to offer practical help to the various initiatives in the
school.
2022 ENROLMENTS
We had a record number of applications for 2022! This is testament to the outstanding achievements of the College and
a tribute to the dedication of our staff. Unfortunately, with a Ministry of Education imposed maximum roll we were not be
able to accommodate everyone.

If you or someone you know are seeking a future position at JPC, abiding by our enrolment criteria which is set by the
Ministry of Education and the Bishop of the Hamilton Diocese, a preference card noting the family connection to the
Catholic church is required.

If you have no Catholic family connection, I strongly encourage families to consider enquiring about and attending the
Baptismal Programme at the St Mary’s Church on Seddon Street, well in advance of making application to JPC. Enrolling
in the Baptismal Programme is for people with a genuine interest in becoming Catholic not simply as a “ticket” to get
into JPC. Once baptised the college will nurture their Faith and journey as a Catholic.

The programme is run twice a year and needs to be completed before the enrolment application can be considered from
the waiting list. Therefore, those seeking a 2023 position at JPC need to consider their preference status and enquire
at the St Mary’s Parish Office before the end of 2021.
God bless

This year John Paul College entered a record 3 teams in the Bay of Plenty round of the Year 9 and Year 10 Get2Go
Series. There were 24 teams of eight students from around the region in the event. The day started with an orienteering
course that required communication, problem solving, planning and decision making while under time pressure.

This was followed by an hour of frantic indoor climbing at The Wall. The third activity was a kayaking relay based at the
Waka Ama club at lake Okareka, requiring both strength and endurance as the teams had a significant portage section
each lap.

For their fourth and final activity after a day of rain, the students absolutely loved the opportunity to to hit the
Whakarewarewa trails in the mud. This action-packed race had several injuries as students pushed their bodies to new
limits.

A big thank you to all of the parents who were there on the day to support and transport our teams, without whom we
wouldn’t be able to attend such an event.

Kia ora tātou. Warm greetings to you all from the Counsellors.

Boredom – It’s not all bad!
It’s good to be past the shortest day and moving again towards more sunshine and the promise
of springtime. Winter can be challenging with its colder weather and fewer daylight hours. With
less opportunity to get outside, it’s easy for us all, including our young people, to become more
heavily reliant on screens for entertainment. It’s seldom we find ourselves without something
to occupy us online. Because of this, our experiences with boredom are fleeting. But actually,
science suggests that boredom is really good for our mental health!

For our young people, having a break from social media and other screen usage, provides respite from the hyper-
stimulation of long periods with multiple draws on their attention. The space caused by boredom can be the only time
the brain is in peace with time to rest, reflect and recharge. It also provides the space for creativity, because when
there’s no external stimuli, our mind looks inward to create our own stimulation through using our imaginations. Keeping
this in mind can perhaps make it easier for us, as adults, to hold the line for more down time away from screens when
we hear that familiar phrase, “I’m bored!”
On other matters, we’ve been busy in counselling over recent weeks, with some initiatives to support our young people.

    • We are currently undertaking safety surveys with Years 7-12 students. This provides students with the
opportunity to speak up about any concerns around bullying, either for themselves, or for other students.
Students fill out a paper survey during form time, and also have an opportunity to submit information via email
if they prefer. All information comes to the counsellors for follow up in consultation with the Deans.
    • Following on from the Loves-Me-Not programme last term, some of our students have embraced the
opportunity to share the message of safe and healthy relationships with the wider student community through
a poster competition for years 7 – 10 students. The competition closes this Friday with great prizes up for grabs.
(Well done Mary Ortega and Aliyana Chan for organising this). Also, a poster of safety helplines is currently
being produced for display in bathrooms around the school. (An idea promoted by Finley Gielen-Lilley).
    • In collaboration with REAL, groups to support some of our young people with strategies for dealing with anxiety,
low mood and regulating big emotions, have been running at school and off site.
    • Next week, SAFETALK training will be undertaken by a group of senior students.
The TALK steps enable a student connector helper to confidently have a conversation with another student
who has disclosed worries of thoughts about suicide and connect them safely to the necessary support.
Please remember, we always welcome your comments, feedback or questions, or requests for support if you have any
concerns for your young person.

THE ROTARY NATIONAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FORUM 2022
The Rotary National Science & Technology Forum is designed to encourage top performers in Year 12 at school to
study and ultimately enter careers in Science, Mathematics and Technology or related fields. This programme is aimed
at outstanding students from across New Zealand. For those students who are selected, the Forum provides the
opportunity to facilitate their personal growth, develop their leadership skills and for them to establish a wider network
of peers. Historically, the feedback from students who are selected for the Forum has indicated that they develop a
renewed motivation and determination to succeed after they have attended it.
High levels of academic performance are not the sole criteria for consideration. Today’s society demands that high
achieving individuals be well rounded, open-minded people who possess strong communication skills and the ability to
recognise the value of and embrace arts, culture and recreation.
The registration fee is $1995. This covers the cost of accommodation, all meals and most activities. Transport costs for
students who reside beyond a 150 km radius of Auckland will also be covered.

AUT UNIVERSITY UPDATES AND INFORMATION
Programme updates:
Perioperative Practice. Study Perioperative Practice - Bachelor of Health Science - AUT. Starting from 2022, a
new major will be available in the Bachelor of Health Sciences. Perioperative Practice trains students to become
anesthetic technicians. (subject to final approval)
At the moment there is a shortage of anesthetic technicians in New Zealand, to the extent that the profession is on
Immigration NZ regional skill shortage list.
One reason for this is that until now, in order to study and train to become an anesthetic technician, applicants had to
already be working in a hospital environment, which itself was a barrier to entry. Qualified anesthetic technicians
generally earn between $51,000 and $79,000 and those in management positions earn higher.

AUT accommodation is on a first come first served basis. It does tend to fill up so it won’t hurt to get an application in
quickly. To apply students will need a student ID number, and so they need to have already applied for a programme.
This is for:
The Akoranga Student Village on the North Shore Campus ($289 per week)
The one bedroom studio apartments on Mayoral Drive City Campus ($375 per week)
The flat-style apartments on Wellesley Street City Campus ($275 – small room, $299 – medium room, $319 – large
room)
Applications. Student online application - AUT – applications are already open. Students can already get a provisional
(conditional) offer which will reserve a place for them in the programme.
Scholarships. Secondary Schools Scholarships - AUT- Applications for scholarships are now open and close on the
1st of September. The scholarships this year have changed slightly from last year.
The value has increased now to $14,000 ($8,000 in the first year, then $4,000 in the second, and $2,000 in the third
year) (previously the scholarships were only worth $6500).
What was previously called the New Horizons scholarship is now called Hiki Ake Lift Up. Previously this scholarship
was only for students from a decile 1 – 4 school. Now it’s for any student who is experiencing financial hardship or has
been disadvantaged due to personal circumstances.
For students living outside of Auckland, there is also a new scholarship ‘Welcome to Auckland’. The value of this
scholarship is $17,000 ($11,000 towards accommodation in the first year, $4,000 towards fees in the second year, and
$2,000 towards fees in the third year). This scholarship, like the others is based on academic results and leadership/
extracurricular activities.

Takere is now an Accommodation Scholarship for Māori and Pacific students
Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury welcomed 37 Māori and Pacific ākonga (students) onto the

semester successfully navigating university life. Their experiences and feedback have led to adaptations for 2022. Key
changes include an increased stipend of $1,200 (paid as a $400 fortnightly allowance for six weeks), needs-based
subsidised accommodation at a UC student hall throughout first year and an extension of the programme to six weeks.
