Issue No: 5/2022 • 25 May 2022 • Term 2, Week 6 Jirrawanday News Principal s Message ’ Diary Dates Halfway of Term 2 We are now past the halfway mark of Term 2, and it is full steam ahead at White Rock Week 6-7 State School. Over the remaining weeks of Term 2 students will be demonstrating what Friday 27 May - Friday 3 June they have learnt across the semester, displaying their learning skills and abilities. I look forward to celebrating National Reconciliation Week each student's success and our academic achievement of Semester 1. Week 7 Under 8s Day & Australia's Biggest Morning Tea Wednesday 1 - Friday 3 June Last Friday 20th of May the school held Under 8s Day combined with ILF Camp Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. I would like to thank staff and all the different agencies and groups that supported in putting the event Friday 3 June together. The event was a fantastic success and brought joy and smiles all round. Over $1600 was raised to Reconciliation Cultural Dress Day go towards cancer research in loving memory of our beloved Mrs Sharon Jawai. Week 8 NAPLAN Monday 6 June Over the last two weeks students in Year 3 and 5 have completed their NAPLAN testing online. This is the P&C Meeting 3.30pm first time the school has moved to the online format for the tests. All students put in an amazing effort and Tuesday 7 June tried their absolute best, and we are immensely proud of their achievements. School Photos Year 6 Camp In Week 4 our Year 6 students attended Tinaroo Outdoor Educational Centre for our annual Year 6 camp. Thursday 9 June I was lucky enough to participate in one of the days and was impressed by the aptitude and efforts of the Reader's Cup students and staff. Week 10 Attendance Thursday 23 June Our school attendance has dipped significantly this term and is Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival currently sitting at 83%. There are several reasons for this, with sickness Tuckshop ‘Red Day’ accounting for many absences each day. Many of the absences, however, Report Cards emailed home are unexplained by students missing school with no reasons given. Regular attendance at school is critical and is required for students to Friday 24 June achieve the best outcomes from their education. I ask all families to Prep-2 Athletics Carnival make school attendance a number one priority. Last day of Term 2 Toys at school The school has a no toys at school policy which restricts students bringing toys, Pokémon cards and other items to school. Recently we have had several students bringing banned items to school which has resulted in arguments and in some cases theft. I request that all families discuss this with their children and for students to no longer bring these items to school. These are moments we stop and look at what we are grateful for in our lives – it could be our friends; it could be our school; it could be our lunches; it could even be the sunshine. There are so many opportunities for us to stop and be mindful about how fortunate we are. Each newsletter, we will be showcasing some of our DIS moments for the term. Jett Phillips is our DIS moment! Jett has been working with his friends to pick up rubbish at lunchtimes. Jett said: “It makes me feel good to do something for my school and my friends. If I pick up the rubbish, then the microplastics don’t go into the ocean, and then I am being kind to the animals that might eat it thinking it is food. I am really proud of what I am doing to help my school.” Well done Jett – keep up the great work! 5LG, 4NP and 4TR have been sharing their gratitude for their teachers and our staff by giving them these notes about their character strengths too! White Rock State School Jirrawanday News 25 May 2022 • Page 4 Biggest Morning Tea On Friday 20 May our school raised money for The Cancer Council by holding a Biggest Morning Tea in conjunction with Under 8s Day. This fundraiser was to honour our dear friend and colleague, Mrs Sharon Jawai, who passed away last year from cancer. Through the morning tea, selling raffle tickets and earrings (donated by former teacher Miss Chloe Evans) and online donations, we were able to raise a whopping $1600. I would like to sincerely thank Jackley's Bakehouse for donating cupcakes, Shannean Moncrieff for donating raffle prizes, the Queensland Teacher's Union for their donation towards supplies and the staff and community of our school for their generosity and support. The winners of the raffle were: 1st Josephine Lewis (Teacher Aide), 2nd Kathyrn Dean (Teacher Aide), 3rd Bridget Roberts (Teacher) and 4th Heather Tung-Yep (Teacher-Aide). Kelley-Jean Randall Head of Curriculum Writing Hall of Fame Welcome to our new feature on students who have performed exceptionally well in writing this term. Here we will showcase their outstanding work. The Loss of a Shamrock One hot, Autumn day as the sun was just arriving, Layla was getting ready to perform in the parade. Tia Jawai She loved to perform for fellow Irish people and non-Irish people. Saint Patrick’s Day was significant Year 4 to Layla because her parents were born in Ireland and her ancestors were raised as Christians. Little 3 / 4CP did she know, a big problem was coming. When Layla was walking to the parade, she saw busy crowded streets filled with people eager to go to the parade. She smelled mash and corned beef perfectly cooked and felt her courage building up slowly in her body. Layla heard the director of the parade saying two hours until the parade. That’s how she knows she is close to performing in the parade. Later that day, Layla was putting her tap shoes on and getting ready to start. She reached into her pocket and was expecting her shamrock. All of a sudden all she pulled out was a handful of cotton. She felt distressed and under pressure because she had never performed without her shamrock before. First, Layla rushed to the park where she rehearsed and searched for half an hour. She couldn’t find it so she slowly walked to the nearest bench, dragging her feet behind her. Layla looked sadder than a three year old who had just dropped their watermelon sorbet on the ground. Then, she remembered she left it in her bag. Layla heard the director shouting out, “Layla, where are you? The parade starts in two minutes.” She quickly started running to the parade. “Coming,” she responded. When she got there, she picked up her bag and checked every pocket. At last, Layla had it in her hands again. As Layla was walking in the parade, she sighed in relief that she got her shamrock back in time for the parade. Reading Club Reading Club is open in the Library every day from 8am for students, parents and siblings. White Rock State School Jirrawanday News 25 May 2022 • Page 5 Under 8s Day On Friday 20 May we celebrated Under 8s Day with lots of attractions and hands on fun. The less than sunny weather early in the day meant that a lot of activities had to be moved inside or undercover but luckily, we are a resilient bunch at White Rock State School and we just chipped in and did what we had to do to make the morning enjoyable. Mr Prior started the morning off by reading a fun story called Now that’s a hat! by Heath McKenzie. After the children were reminded of school rules and expectations they were off to have fun, be creative and make memories. I think the station that the children found most exciting was the cupcake decorating with Bec Jackley from Jackley’s Bakehouse. The line was at least 10 kids long at any one time and she went through the 300 cupcakes in less than 1 hour! After 1.5 hours of non-stop action, it was time to pack up and go back to class to enjoy a yummy hot sausage in bread. Thank you to Mr McLaren and Mrs Traves for getting the sausages ready for the classes. Let’s see what Under 8s Day 2023 has to offer!

White Rock State School Jirrawanday News 25 May 2022 • Page 7 Year 4 Camp 7-9 September 2022 Preparations have begun for our Year 4 students upcoming camp next term. Instructors from Daradgee Environmental Education Centre visited the school and ran team building exercises with the children this week. Further information about the camp will come home later this term. Check out the Daradgee website for a host of information on what the children will be doing: https://daradgeeeec.eq.edu.au/ Year 4 Report Year 4 – Cairns Regional Council Waste Education Visit Cairns Regional Council (CRC) deals with too much rubbish. We need to help them by recycling what we can. Scott Paterson (CRC Waste Education Officer) visited White Rock State School on Monday, 9th May. Did you know? • The recycling truck is larger than the general waste truck. • More than 20, 000 tonnes of food scraps and green waste placed in kerbside waste bins is converted into compost at the Advanced Resource Recovery Facility. This compost is then delivered and used by our local cane farms. • The lovely footpath out the front of our school is made from recycled glass. • Steel items can take up to 50 years to break down. • Plastic bottles are estimated to take up to 450 years to break down. There are 4 main categories for items which can be placed in our recycling bins. These are: • Hard plastics, bottles and containers (hard plastics are like milk containers). • Paper and cardboard. • Steel and Aluminium cans. • Glass bottles and jars. What NOT to put in your recycling bin – RECYCLE RIGHT! •N O soft plastics are to be placed in the recycling bin (soft plastics are things like plastic shopping bags, glad wrap). •N OTHING smaller than a credit card. This means no lids, pegs, paddle pop sticks, etc. • NO food. • NOTHING hazardous (electrical items, gas bottles). • NO nappies. The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) has a team of 13 staff. Two staff are involved in a very important step in the MRF process called ‘pre-sorting’. Their job is made difficult by the incorrect items many people at home place in recycling bins. Items that cannot be recycled are sent to landfill. The total residential waste footprint in the Cairns region in a year is over 100, 000 tonnes. If you want to help with saving our environment and keeping it beautiful, remember the three R’s – REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE. Remember – It is VITAL TO RECYCLE!
