Itinerary

Jazz in New
Orleans

MONDAY, DAY 1 | LAISSEZ LE BON TEMPS ROULER
Settle into your hotel in the heart of the French Quarter, then join your fellow travelers for a welcome
dinner, and live music at the Palm Court Jazz Café, whose stylish décor reflects the elegance of old
New Orleans.

Included Meal: Dinner

TUESDAY, DAY 2 | WALKING TO THE BEAT
Join a local journalist for an in-depth walking tour to learn how New Orleans became the cradle of jazz.
Explore the city’s musical roots from jazz and blues to R&B, Cajun, zydeco, and gospel as you learn about
historic Preservation Hall and travel to Louis Armstrong Park in Congo Square at the edge of the French
Quarter. Dubbed Congo Square in honor of the enslaved people who historically gathered at this site to
sing, beat drums, sell handicrafts, and celebrate, Congo Square remains a vibrant meeting place.

Later, enjoy a curator tour of the Jazz Museum, housed in a former branch of the U.S. Mint, where you
will see instruments played by jazz greats, listen to historical recordings, and enjoy a private performance
in the Museum’s state of the art music room (subject to confirmation). Stop for fresh beignets at Café Du
Monde and spend the rest of the day exploring the lively French Quarter on your own.

Included Meal: Beignets

WEDNESDAY, DAY 3 | KING OF THE PARADE
Behold the elaborate designs and larger-than-life floats at Mardi Gras World, featured on the History
Channel. Tour the vast warehouse, observe an artist at work creating the floats, and learn about the
exciting history of one of New Orleans’ most beloved events. In 1949, Louis Armstrong – the King of Jazz
– was crowned the Zulu King, a “dream come true” for the music legend. Today, you will learn about the
spirit and spectacle of the dozens of Mardi Gras krewes and meet with a member of the Zulu Krewe.
Later, join Grammy-award-winning artist, Kevin Ray Clark for an immersive “jazz tumble” through
the French Quarter. Join Kevin for drinks in three jazz clubs, where you will meet and mingle with band
members and watch as your guide jams with the bands. Continue to enjoy the French Quarter’s nightlife
on your own this evening.

Included Meal: Lunch

THURSDAY, DAY 4 | THE DAWN OF JAZZ
Join journalist John McCusker on a tour of the Kid Ory House, the birthplace of pioneering musician
Edward “Kid” Ory, who played trombone alongside Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and Sidney Bechet,
and thought by some historians to be the unsung inspiration for the dawn of jazz. The Kid Ory House was
also site of a failed slave rebellion in 1811.
