There will be four sessions with a choice of approximately 20 classes to choose from. Registration will open on January 27th and close on March 9th. The cost for this event is $35.00. HOME HORTICULTURE & MASTER GARDENERS Sara Runkel, sara.runkel@oregonstate.edu 541-476-6613 http://extension.oregonstate.edu/josephine/horticulture Instructor: Elliott Goldstein, Certified Master Gardener Fruit trees need proper pruning to remain productive. This hands-on workshop will cover why pruning is important, when to prune and fertilize fruit trees, tools and safety, and how to evaluate a tree and determine which branches to cut. Following a 30 minute information session, participants will work in small groups with real trees. Each group will tie ribbons onto the branches to simulate where cuts should be made. Discussion will occur among attendees as well as with the instructor to discuss and analyze options for pruning. The instructor will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different cut locations and how this will affect the overall shape and structure of the tree. This class will be held outside. Participants should be prepared for cold/wet weather and dress accordingly. No tools needed. Topics will include pest identification (weeds, fungi and insect) and pesticide selection for selective/non-selective, and pre/post-emergence herbicides. Preventative and curative insecticides and fungicides will be discussed. In Addition, application timing and rotation will be presented to help prevent resistance, drift, and pollinator death. (This workshop will qualify for 2 pesticide credits, pending ODA approval). Come to this workshop to learn about controlling common weeds in the Rogue Valley and how to develop a weed management plan for your farm. We’ll use examples appropriate for both organic and conventional systems. You will leave with the start of a weed management plan for your farm. As a reminder, the PSA Grower Training Course is currently the only way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires ‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.’ The course will provide a foundation of FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirements and details on how to develop a farm food safety plan. Individuals who participate in this course are expected to gain a basic understanding of: Microorganisms relevant to produce safety and where they may be found on the farmH How to identify microbial risks, practices that reduce risks, and how to begin implementing produce safety practices on the farm Parts of a farm food safety plan and how to begin writing one Requirements in the FSMA Produce Safety Rule and how to meet them. After attending the entire course, participants will be eligible to receive a certificate from the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) that verifies they have completed the training course. Students learn how to prepare garden produce for preserving, the ins and outs of food preservation equipment, and a host of other skills! Including: how to water bath and pressure can safely and efficiently; preparing fruits, vegetables, herbs, and snacks in a dehydrator; making delicious jerky and sausage; harnessing the natural process of fermentation to create sauerkraut; crock-pickled vegetables, and making optimal use of a freezer. Food safety and kitchen safety is emphasized. Kitchen labs give students opportunities to practice learned skills under qualified supervision to gain confidence. Classes begin April 9th, ending May 16th, for a total of 6 Thursdays and 3 Saturdays (9:00am to 4:30 PM), at the Josephine County Extension Auditorium (East Side) 215 Ringuette St, Grants Pass OR.
