A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOSHUA FRANKLIN Winter is Coming A popular adage from the hit fantasy television and literary sensation “Game of Thrones,” declares that: “Winter is Coming!” This expression carries a meaning of warning and constant vigilance, reminding those who hear it that they must be prepared for the coming of a dark and bitter cold. The writer of the series, George R.R. Martin, elaborated on the message of this motto, writing that “it more generally expresses the sentiment that there are always dark periods in each of our lives, even if things are good now, we must always be ready for a dark period when events turn against us.” This idea parallels Shakespeare’s famous soliloquy by the young Richard, Duke of Gloucester, in the play Richard III, “Now is the winter of our discontent.” That is, although the state of affairs in the world can seem at times summery, yet a foreboding feeling of winter looms in the air. Winter is coming, or perhaps it’s already here. December 21 marked the Winter Solstice, the darkest day of the year. Yet no matter what the season, it feels like a winter of discontent is, at the very least, on the horizon. COVID-19 cases are surging, businesses are closing up shop, inflation is rising, and extreme meteorological events are popping up across the globe. It’s easy to succumb to the heavy bleakness that pervades our news cycles and our social fabric. Yet here’s the thing to remember about winter—it passes. There may be difficult winters, but times and seasons change. This is the reminder that King Solomon offers in his immense wisdom in the biblical book Song of Songs: שׁם ָחלַף ָהלְַך לֹו׃ ֶ ִֶּכּי־ ִהנֵּה ַה ְסּתָ ו ָעבָר ַהג For now the winter is past, The rains are over and gone. The blossoms have appeared in the land, The time of pruning has come; The song of the turtledove Is heard in our land. (Song of Songs 2:11-12) Winter may be here, and it might get colder and darker before it gets warmer and brighter. But Spring is coming too. The solstice marks the point at which the days get longer even though the winter intensifies. A midrash from the book Avot D’Rabbi Natan tells a story about Adam after he and Eve are expelled from the garden. As the days passed into winter, Adam noticed in terror that the days were becoming shorter, the hours of light were becoming less. He thought the world was being destroyed, and disintegrating. He fasted until the solstice, the darkest point of the descent into darkness. Then he saw the days brightening, becoming longer, and understood with relief that it was the way of the world. Let us not forget this valuable lesson that Adam learned, even as winter descends upon us, hope, light, and spring are on the horizon. Rabbi J oshua Franklin 2
