JAMES N. BOYCE RESUME STORY LINES 1. Appointment as Executive Director, Ontario Tennis Association On June 30th, 1997, I was made Executive Director of the association and began the process of rebuilding it. We were $80K in debt after already receiving our yearly government grant, had almost no sponsorships Happy Holidays and various staff vacancies. There was no discipline within the staff and very low morale. I hired an entire new group of people who were strong in character and hard working. Within 9 months the team had turned the operation around and we headed in a new direction. Since 1997 the organization has always been on budget for 21 straight years and tripled in operation size. We were the first to have a website for tennis and a 4-issue tennis magazine called Ontario Tennis-(OT). Our entire accounting system was retooled and professionalized with a host of internal financial policies and controls. Our most significant accomplishment has been the rebuilding of the competitive structure which helped create the environment for ATP tour players Milos Raonic and Denis Shapovalov to develop within. Numerous world Junior Champions have emerged from Ontario. 2. Development of BASELINE (Dynamic Ranking System) We formed a small team at the OTA and a partnership with Computan Inc. in 1999 to design and develop a web-based dynamic ranking system for our competitive structure. I lead the group and did most of the preliminary design work and program functionality. In 2000 our system was operational and was the first such system in Canada or the world. We were able to upload results immediately after matches and generate up-to-date rankings daily. As a result, our website tennisontario.com experienced massive traffic from all the competitors. I also designed and authored the first tennis website in Canada called tennisontario.com. At one point in the early 2000’s the site was receiving over 50 million hits per year.
JAMES N. BOYCE RESUME 3. Doug Philpott Inner City Children’s Tennis Fund I was a member of the Board of the Doug Philpott Inner City program in 2000. Unfortunately, the fund was in financial difficulty and dysfunctional forcing the Board to consider closing it down. The current Chair and co-Chair did not wish to continue in their positions. At the end of the day, I was the only person who came forward to take over Canada’s largest tennis charity. Once in place, I formed a new team of Board members, hired a Controller to manage our tax receipting (which was in arrears for 3 years), retooled our marketing campaign and finally instilled a budget and operating plan. Over the 5 years I was Chair, we increased all our tennis programing to needy inner city kids. When I left in 2005 the Philpott fund had over $500,000 in the bank. 4. Sport Alliance of Ontario (SAO) Board Member In 2003, I was nominated and elected to the Board as the representative of sport executives in Ontario. I served for 5 years and joined the Finance Committee which oversaw the budgeting and financial reporting of the $9 million budget. A number of recommendations were made through our analysis and a cautionary warning was made to management that the SAO’s cash flow was not healthy. I was asked to work on a cash flow analysis with the finance team. Unfortunately, our warnings were not heeded and in 2015 the SAO went bankrupt and was closed. 5. Senior Tennis Professional During my tenure at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club in the 1980’s as the Senior Professional, I created a number of tennis programs which are still in existence today and benefit the Toronto tennis community. The Toronto Ladies Invitational Doubles Tournament is held every year since 1981 in January raising over $80,000 each year for Inner City Children’s programs and the Under 12/14 Toronto Clay Court Classic which also raises funds for needy children. Over the years these programs have raised well over a million dollars for charity.
