TOWN NEWS We ushered in the Lunar New Year with toasts, yum sengs, good wishes, fine food ... and loud singing! W hen over seventy tables clap and shout their way through several verses of Gong Xi Gong Xi, you know the Lunar New Year has been thoroughly ushered in. We did it at the Summer Garden at SAFRA Mount Faber on 9 February. The location was great, with floor to ceiling CCTV near every table, so you could see everything, no matter where you sat. The entertainment was by local talent groups, who were very good. They danced, they sang, they made music and – if they were our Sparkletots – they jumped. (They definitely like the jumping parts best.) All the Advisers were there and came over to say hello. After presenting dozens of appreciation awards, Ms Indranee told us the aims of the upcoming Budget. Then Mr Chan gave us an overview of the issues and opportunities we face – and went on to reassure the young people in the room that they would not later have to bear the financial burden of decisions made by the present government. The Singapore way was to pay as you go. “We will do the best for your generation. We hope you will do the best for the next,” he said. 2 The Tanjong Pagar Town Council
TOWN NEWS Making Redhill Ready for Emergencies Y ou need to know what to do in an emergency. You need to get that knowledge now, before you find yourself in an emergency. With that in mind, residents were invited to participate and learn from agencies such as the SCDF, SPF and SG Secure at the 2019 Radin Mas Preparedness Day. Held at the Redhill Market concourse, everyone, ranging from young kids to senior citizens, had an opportunity to learn what to do in an emer- gency through quizzes, games, virtual reality and hands-on experience. S antarinas from Queenstown’s Women’s and Senior Citizens’ Executive Committees organized a lovely Christmas Tea celebration for seniors on 8 December last year – and made presents for everyone. They arranged a ‘snowfall’ in the function hall and served tea while the elderly were entertained. They made Christmas stockings stuffed with little gifts and Dr Chia Shi-Lu visited every table and gave one of these to each guest. SunShine in #My Buona Vista P roject SunShine is an annual charity month organized by the People’s Association to inculcate the spirit of giving from the more able to the less privileged in the community. Throughout the month, Neighbourhood Committee volunteers work with RC volunteers in their choice of activities, such as refurbishing the homes of needy residents, visiting orphanages, distributing food items - or arranging fun activities for underprivileged residents. This year, Buona Vista division celebrated Project SunShine by hosting 400 residents to a sumptuous dinner coupled with fun entertainment and games catered to a mass audience. Minister Chan was delighted by the heartwarming camaraderie shown by both the residents and volunteers as it exemplifies the gracious community spirit in #MyBuonaVista. Window February 2019 5
