Congratulations to Harry Fereday, Will Hoffman and Hudson Young for being invited to take part in trials games for next seasons U17 squad Around the grounds On Sunday I went and watch the U12 Red girls team. Second game was the U13 Black who were playing Laurimar and it was a very tight game up to half time and then the Eltham boys showed their class and run away with the game. Third game was the boys under 14 Black who played some very competitive football, throughout the game their showed their fantastic skills. The fourth game was the U16 who played their best quarter of football for the season but this team has had a third of their team out injured each weak. The final game I attended was the U17 who started of slow but after half time they took control of the game and showed their class and run away with an easy win. 2021 AFL VICTORIA METRO JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT SERIES NEWS NEWSREPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL ROUND UP Eltham was proudly represented at the Vic Metro games during the week by Livi Herrick, Abbey Vaughan, Momoko Johnstone and Scarlett Johnson in the NFNL U15 Girls Teams. Livi & Abbey were first up against the EDFL. The EDFL girls started very well; they were a bigger and faster team and had benefited from training together for the past six months. EDFL got out to six goal lead by half time as the NFNL girls thought hard to stay in the match. The second half was a more even performance with the NFNL dominating long periods of possession but when the ball was finally turned over the EDFL girls moved it quickly and were able to score. Despite a stronger second half by the NFNL girls they eventually went down by 57 points. Livi was solid all game in defence and had plenty of work to do, whilst Abbey fought hard in attack when the ball went forward. A tough introduction to Rep Footy for the girls. Momoko & Scarlett played against the Riddell District FNL in the afternoon sun and from the outset the NFNL girls led the way. The Northern girls moved the ball well, winning the ruck, strong in the contests and linking well. Whilst most individual contests were tough and even the Northern girls were comfortably 2 goals a qtr better side and ran out winners by 45 points. Momoko was good in defence early laying some strong tackles at critical times, before moving onto the ball later in the game. Her strong running and good delivery into the forward line helped the NFNL girls build a strong lead in the second half. Scarlett’s run and her ability to move quickly from contest to contest saw her in a number of key plays, including an early goal she set up. As the game went in she found more and more space and became a critical link into the attack. Congratulations to all of the Eltham girls, you made all of you parents, teammates and coaches proud. Craig and Michael EJFC also had 8 boys represent the club for the U14 AFL Victorian Metro Junior Development Series. Dylan Marriott, Brady Kriders, Nick Driscoll, Riley Johns & Luca Klaic all played in the B team. Zain Andreetta, Luke Zahra & Tom Bell in the A team. Both teams played with great spirit and ferocity and the Panther boys were great. EDJFL were a bit stronger but it was a great experience for the boys. Richie The U15 Boys Division 1 included the talents of Jett Williams, Jake Lulich and Matthew Zrna. Matthew has also been awarded the honor of Deputy Vice Captain for the series. Well Done Matt on your appointment. Ben Carbone, William Champion Jackson Smith and Xavier William took the field for the Division 2 team. A tremendous experience for all involved. Well done Boys and best of luck for your game next week. INTRODUCING LISA PITMAN EJFC PLAYER WELFARE MANAGER Hi, my name is Lisa Pitman and I have been given the honour of fulfilling the roll of Welfare Manager for the Junior Club. My family have been a part of the Eltham Panthers Junior Club for over 10 years. We are passionate about the club, the kids, their families, and the volunteers that help keep the club running week in week out. Although it’s great to see the teams win games on the field, I feel it’s equally important as a club to support them when they come off the field. As we know decisions they make while playing a game can have consequences, this is the same when they take off their Panthers jumper and walk out of the club rooms. We want to help them make positive decisions. This is where I feel as a club, it’s important to talk about issues of today that the youth may be struggling with, for instance, drugs, alcohol, and mental health. Having a safe place to discuss these issues with professional facilitators to talk to them, hopefully will lead into making better choices. On the field they are guided by the coaching team, off the field they are guided by us as parents. So as a club we want you to know you are still supported when the siren finishes at the end of the game. Going forward please keep reading the newsletter and look out for presentations for your kids. Would love to hear any suggestions you have about issues you feel need attention. Why clubs need to include mental health in their policy. One in five Australians experiences mental ill-health every year. It is more important than ever to make sure your players, members and parents feel safe, connected and supported. Covering mental health in your club policy makes it easier for your club to support its members and guests. Get smart. Coaches, senior club members and leaders will be better equipped to understand the mental health environment in their club and respond accordingly. You will know how to have conversations around mental health and be able to point people in the direction of professional help, if they need it. Make a difference! Your players, members and their families will feel more supported by their club and may be more likely to seek help if they know it’s readily available. More respect for your club Good Sports clubs with a mental health policy are stronger, more respected and more connected in their local communities, making them more attractive and welcoming. Better results Clubs that support player resilience by having a strong understanding of mental health may see stronger turnout at practice and on game day, as well as better player performance. We fell into a hole through the 2nd & 3rd qtrs which allowed Sth to get a bit of a lead but much to the boys credit they didn’t give up. We have been dealt a very challenging 4 weeks of football against the likely finalists, and so far, we have acquitted ourselves incredibly well under some very trying circumstances. It’s easy to get despondent when the scoreboard seems out of reach, but our results are stacking up well against some of our other opponents, so all is not lost. Now is not the time for our boys to lose hope – there will be sunny days ahead. Without a bench this week, the boys knew they had to find new levels of commitment and energy. The first quarter was a great team effort and it is a credit to the boys that they followed the coaches instructions, tackling hard and closing up the oppositions run. Mitch Clements was unlucky to receive a head knock in the 2nd quarter, as he was playing some promising footy down back. Kilmore got a real run on for 15 minutes and unfortunately put the game away by half time. But, despite all the odds, as they have done plenty of times this year, the team found the mental strength to fight on and hit the scoreboard through Josh Galea and Archie Gardam, and keep their scoring to a minimum. At one stage we had 17 on the ground, so I cannot commend our boys enough for their efforts to stay focussed in the moment. Credit to our captains, Mika Gerlt and Hayden Laffey, whom really deserved their on-field titles today. Some players were asked to step up in the absence of others and take ownership of the team and the response was immediate. That’s quality leadership!! The tide will turn for us. Hang in there fellas. Coaches Comments: The boys travelled to Mernda and came up against a strong, undefeated team..We played a good brand of football in the 1st quarter but couldn’t score. Mernda having all the luck scored 2 goals. In the 2nd quarter the boys plqyed better in defence and were unlucky not to score from some fast breaks, we went into the main break 4 goals down. In the Premiership quarter the Panthers stepped up a gear and finally got rewarded for their effort with 2 late goals and outscored Mernda by 8 points. The boys had hope of an upset coming into the last quarter being only 16 points down but unfortunately didn’t come home with the points. We are very proud of the boys on the improvement they are showing each week and are looking forward to next weeks challenge in Kilmore. We hosted Wallan at Susan Street on a cracking winter’s morning having played them on their home deck in round 1. While the score line was one sided it was not lost on our girls that this was an eight goal better performance by us this time around. Our usual team rules were shared with the team by co- captains Maddie and Keira before the game: Win the ball, kick into space, when under pressure we handball and we tackle tackle tackle. The latter was especially on display throughout the whole day with Alannah being an absolute standout tackler from the first quarter and right through. The coaches observed the difference that five weeks can make – even though we’ve missed a few through lockdown. Wallan players that in round one were bursting out of packs and into space were finding themselves shut down and unable to get clear. They too were a good tackling side and the low scoreline showed how tough going it was. While the ball spent plenty of time in the Wallan front half we saw enormous effort by our girls to force contest after contest and make every kick hard to earn. Rachael and Gabby showed great grit and determination with their defensive tackles while Mae played a smart role as a winger pushing deep to support team mates and win ball in open space. Willow ran and ran all day and was either tackling or winning her own ball to push forward. Lola was also a great performer backing herself to play in front in one on one contests, keeping her opponent away and then using a booming kick to clear into space. Most pleasing for coaches is the great improvement of each and every player in the team. On field talk is growing, players are supporting each other and finding each other with kicks and handpasses. There’s a clear desire to improve and the smiles after each game show just how much they are enjoying the experience. Under 10 BOYS PANTHERS Under 9 BOYS RED Eltham vs Eltham Red vs Epping Coaches Comments: . Coaches Comments: On Sunday we all hit the road out to Epping on a beautiful Sunday morning. Boys were once again excited to be out and playing and as our captains Carter and Seb lead the boys out you could tell they were ready to go. The first quarter early we had all the play but just could quite put the goals on the scoreboard, but the boys played very well. They have all been working hard at leading up to the ball and running into space and this was a pleasure to watch all day as we moved the ball very well. In the second quarter, our forward line fired with Jonah, London & Zach all getting goals and really looking for each other. All the boys never hesitate to give it to their team mate in a better position and share the ball around. Carter also was fantastic in the middle. The third quarter was a great contest, with Epping having some of the play, but our backs repelling each entry and moving the ball into space, with London again getting lots of the ball and both Harrys having great quarters. In the last quarter, Cooper played a great game in the middle, with Maison playing well and our star studded backline, really using the ball well, kicking to advantage and working the ball very well. Overall this was a great team performance by all the boys and London and Seb taking out player of the match honours and Maison and Cooper taking home the voucher but all the the boys contributed to easily our most improved game of the year. Under 9 BOYS BLACK Eltham vs Greensborough Coaches comments: Under 9s Black vs Greensborough. We played the mighty Greensborough before, and we knew we had a tough game ahead. With school holidays, we were short 4 players so we hit the field with 13 motivated, positive and determined footy champions. We started very well with some solid play early in the middle with Nate and Jude leading the way. Rhys continued his stellar improvement and was everywhere initially. Noah was up forward and with a beautiful lead, solid grab, he kicked the first goal of the match. Jack was our captain and he played like a little champion, in honour of his late grandmother. Sincere condolences to the Downes family. Oscar had his best game yet, marking everything and using his long kick to advantage. Lucas again ran hard with a smile on his face, Eamon improved out of sight and is gaining confidence in his arm. Matt Bell again proved that he will be a very good footballer in years to come as he reads the ball very well. One the most exciting features is how much fun they are having, the friendships they are making and their rapid improvement – wonderful to see. We are playing exceptionally well for an U9s team and we know we will keep improving. Next Sunday we will be even better! Oscar and Noah won the medal, which pleasingly everyone in the team recognized. Under 9 BOYS GREY Eltham vs Montmorency Coaches comments: This week saw Eltham host Montmorency at Panther Place on a brilliant Sunday morning. With only the one match scheduled at Panther Place, we elected to play straight across the ground, giving the boys a bigger ground and clear instructions to “run into space”. Jack and Miles were appointed co-captains for the day, and it was great to see both boys address the huddle throughout the day with some encouraging & complimentary words to their team mates (NB: they also requested a pizza night soon!). In the first quarter, Josh and Billy got the team moving forward and fast early, supported by some excellent running by Jaxton (which he would continue to do all day). Up against a skilful Montmorency team, Harvey stood up early, rebounding the ball strongly, well assisted by Zac and Alfred who took some nice marks in the back half. The second quarter saw some excellent football from both teams, and it’s really great to see how much progress the boys have made this year with their kicking to targets. Percy kicked a nice goal off the ground; River and Hunter forced the ball forward with some strong kicks under pressure. The team tackled well, led by Ben and Daniel who layed some monster tackles, including a couple of gang tackles which really demonstrated the effort from the group ! In the third quarter, Montmorency pulled ahead, and the focus was for our back half to play tight man-to-man defence – the first time this season that the boys really needed to be accountable back there. Special mentions to Liam and Benji for their defensive efforts. Charlie kicked a superb goal (though must be said he still owes the team one more goal, having kicked two whilst playing against us last week!). In the final quarter, Harvey kicked a goal to rally the team. Toby was tackled hard and ended up on the bottom of a large pack… refusing to go off, he bravely continued, before marking and kicking a long goal (and in doing so, was awarded the ‘Spirit of Montmorency’ ward from the opposing team coach)! Best on Ground honours were shared between Josh, Percy and Zac. And good rendition of the club song after the game (though second verse still needs some work). Under 9 BOYS WHITE Eltham White vs Montmorency Swoopers Coaches Comments: Here we were. Arriving at Simms Oval for our very first match of football under lights at Montmorency’s equivalent of the hallowed turf of the MCG. We were full of excitement and our tummies were jittering with butterflies as we eagerly awaited the roar of the first siren. What a spectacle this night was going to be for all involved with the Under 9 Eltham White football team. With Hunter Harrington leading the team as captain, we got off to a blistering start. Within minutes of the first whistle, we had managed to get the ball in our forward zone and this allowed Thomas Owen-Jones to get our scoreboard rolling. He was able to boot three goals and a behind in quick succession and by this stage we knew that we were now a team not to be reckoned with. With Hudson Keenan brilliant in defence, we were able to keep Montmorency’s scoring opportunities to a minimum. As the middle two terms started, the skies opened up and we were playing in what could only be described as torrential rain. The ground was a complete mud bath and every touch of the football was the result of a hard fought battle between the two opposing teams. Even the centre circle was under six inches of water as the third term started. No matter how hard each team tried, neither team could move the ball to where they wanted and it was near impossible to follow our game plan. We just couldn’t manage to get the ball near our white posts and as a result could not add to our tally during this middle part of the game. By term four, we had appeared to have adapted to these wet and slippery conditions that had been thrown upon us and this allowed both Zac Jackman and Thomas Owen-Jones to each score another goal for our team. At the end of night’s play, Thomas Owen-Jones was awarded the Spirit of Monty Award by the opposition’s coach, Maximus Ganter was awarded the Best & Fairest Medal and Jacob Guyett and Hudson Keenan were both took home our Dedication Awards. What a strange and bizarre feeling it was to turn up to the ground we all love to call home and to be told to remove the red sashes from our Eltham jerseys as we were now the away team. Our teammates were now the opposition. Upon this stark realisation, the boys quickly regrouped, started their pre-match warm-up, received the day’s game plan from me and then it suddenly occurred to me that we were no longer seventeen individual players, we were now a tightly bonded team known as the Eltham Under 9 White team and this is exactly how we played right from the first bounce. We weren’t about individual performances, we were all about how we were going to perform as a team. With Clyde Askwith as captain, we got off to a flying start and before too long Hunter Harrington had booted our first two goals. As the quarter continued, we continued to apply pressure to the Eltham Grey team hoping we could find a flaw in their defence but as we were two such evenly matched teams this seemed a somewhat challenging task. As the middle two terms started, we knew we had to follow our game plan to a tee if we were going to be a match for our opposition.
