We are excited to share the latest news, events and opportunities from SCAR and the wider Antarctic community with you. Registration is still open for the AntClimNow Scientific Research Programme launch event on 9th June. The meeting will identify opportunities for collaborations and engagement, so make sure to register by 2nd June and join. We would like to warmly congratulate Steven Chown, who has just been awarded the Medal of the 30th anniversary of the Madrid Protocol by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French National Committee for Arctic and Antarctic Research, and the French Polar Institute Paul-Emile Victor. Congratulations, Steven! We are excited to announce that applications for the 2021 SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme are now open. The scheme is open to mid- to late-career stage scientists to undertake a short-term visit (1 to 4 weeks) to an institute in another SCAR member country. In recognition of the current travel restrictions, there will be significant flexibility with regard to the timing. Visits can also be entirely virtual. Please make sure to submit your application by 30th August. The Visiting Scholar Scheme complements the early-career SCAR Fellowship Scheme, which is also still open for applications. SCAR will offer three to four Fellowships of up to USD $15,000 each for 2021. The deadline for applications is 30th June. If you are a Portuguese speaker and are interested in applying,
make sure to watch the recording of the Zoom webinar that was organised by APECS Portugal and APECS Brazil. As always, our newsletter also features a range of news from the SCAR community, such as the chance to submit your design to the Ant-ICON logo competition. We hope you enjoy this month's edition and wish you all the best, - Chandrika Nath SCAR Executive Director Featured News Register for the AntClimNow launch event AntClimNow is one of the new SCAR Scientific Research Programmes (SRPs) and is focussed on understanding current trends and variability in Antarctic climate and prediction of near-term conditions in the Antarctic climate system on timescales of years to decades. Image of the Month
Our image of the month was taken by Nina Gallo at the northern end of the Lemaire Channel in the Antarctic Peninsula. The channel is 11 km long and only 1,600 metres wide at its narrowest point. It was first traversed by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in December 1898. We love seeing photos from SCAR scientists so get in touch at info@scar.org if you'd like to share yours!
