                                                                                                 Ardith Fish celebrated the open-
                                                                                             ing of his first exhibit on July 8th at
                                                                                             Groovacious’ Art Wall Gallery. The
                                                                                             exhibit, “Black Market Underground
                                                                                             Art/Abstract Expressionism,
                                                                                             Impressionism, Expression Art,” fea-
                                                                                             tures vibrant and unique abstract art.
                                                                                             “I believe there is a historic precedent
                                                                                             set by the different artist and differ-
                                                                                             ent art movements. Impressionism
                                                                                             is a good starting point for me.
                                                                                             Impressionism was a revolution in art
                                                                                             that changed how art is perceived,”
                                                                                             states Fish in his artist statement.
                                                                                                 Ardith uses a variety of materials
                                                                                             and methods to create his distinctive
                                                                                             art pieces, detailed in each painting’s
                                                                                             description. Along with different dry-
                                                                                             ing times of paints and the direction
                                                                                              of the canvas for drip effects, Ardith
                                                                                               employs the use of several agents to
                                                                                                create interesting textures. These
                                                                                                 include, WD-40, tempera paint
                                                                                                  powder, glitter, asphalt emulsion,
                                                                                                   enamel, mineral spirits, house
                                                                                                     paint, construction colorants,
                                                                                                      and even nail polish. Ardith’s
                                                                                                      impressive use of these
                                                                                                      resources generate fascinat-
                                                                                                      ing textures and pigments.

                                                                                                                               “His father drove a horse and buggy and he lived
                                                                                                                          to see a man on the moon.” For my life, the evolving
                                                                                                                          telephone is the indicator of just how long I have
                                                                                                                          been communicating with my fellow human beings.
                                                                                                                          In middle school, I began talking to my friends over
                                                                                                                          something called a “party line.”
                                                                                                                               A party line was a phone line shared among
                                                                                                                          neighbors. In our case, there were four families on
                                                                                                                          the same line. When you wanted to make a call, you
                                                                                                                          carefully lifted the receiver to make sure one of your
                                                                                                                          neighbors wasn’t already talking. If so, you replaced
                                                                                                                          the receiver, waited a few minutes and tried again.
                                                                                                                          Line is clear, so you can make your call, always with
                                                                                                                          the awareness that you can’t talk long because one
                                                                                                                          of the other families might be waiting to use the line.
                                                                                                                          You knew because you heard the slight click as some-
                                                                                                                          one picked up their phone, and you then hurried your
                                                                                                                          call to its conclusion. And you were always aware that
                                                                                                                          someone might be listening in. Our nemesis was the

                                                                                                                          necessary numbers at my fingertips, but I don’t sleep
                                                                                                                          with it or take it everywhere with me. I don’t always
                                                                                                                          carry a bag and all my pants don’t have pockets. I use
                                                                                                                          that archaic duo paper and pencil when I want to
                                                                                                                          remember something. An alarm clock wakes me up
                                                                                                                          and my camera hangs around my neck.
                                                                                                                               And I am not going to cancel my l and line
                                                                                                                          anytime soon. When that phone rings, I know where
                                                                                                                          it is: plugged into the wall in predictable places. I

                                                 at this year’s July Jamboree was the
                                                relentless sunshine. Thankfully, it didn’t
                                               stop the crowds on Cedar’s Main Street from
                                                enjoying a little car-coveting while peeking
                                                  under the hoods and imagining getting
                                                 behind the wheel of some very beautiful,
                                                      antique and futuristic vehicles.
