“The grid is the circulation of the energy transition and the solid foundation for our partnerships with countries, counties and cities.” Hildegard Müller COO Grid & Infrastructure
Grid & Infrastructure Grid projects for the “Energiewende” – examples AmpaCity With the project AmpaCity, innogy links two transformer substations with a superconducting cable, the longest in the world. Over a length of one kilometre, the line replaces five conventional 10,000-volt cables and transmits the electricity almost without any losses. This is made possible by means of cooling: the superconductor is cooled down internally to about minus 200° degrees Celsius. Smart Country In the district Bitburg-Prüm of the Eifel region, innogy has commissioned a smart electricity distribution network. This model region reflects the challenges of the future: many decentralised producers feeding into the grid and a low local electricity demand. Smart grid components, as well as a biogas storage system serving as a buffer, provide the solution in the multi-award-winning Smart Country project. Smart Operator Smart grid solutions for the low voltage grid: The autonomous control module optimises the flow of electricity and keeps the local grid stable. In three test regions, a smart operator in the distribution grid communicates for the first time with smart building technology in test households. Power to Gas An award winning research project in Ibbenbüren offers a particularly high potential for power storage. Green excess power is taken from the grid, converted to hydrogen and then stored in the local natural gas grid. When there is demand at a later time, the energy can be transformed back to power and be used. innogy SE · December 2017 16
