In 1962, Reverend Gene Lake helped a friend move from Texas to northern Indiana to accept a new pastorate. While in the state, Gene began to see Indiana as a mission field in need of churches. Gene and his wife, Betty, had already answered the call to serve as missionaries to Nigeria, but they were turned down by the Foreign Mission Board for health reasons. The following year, Gene and Betty moved to Indianapolis with their four children to plant a new church. In 1963, Northside Baptist Church was constituted with twenty-six charter members and Reverend Lake left a few years later to accept a call to a missionary position in northern Indiana. Northside has maintained a missionary mentality throughout its various seasons of growth and ministry. The church has prayed passionately and given sacrificially to numerous mis- sions emphases through the years. Church leaders and church members have been sent out to serve as missionaries, pioneer new ministries, and plant churches. The legacy of B.J. Higgins and the Missions Fund that bear his name are testimony to the church’s ongoing interest in global and local missions. Most recently, representatives from Northside partici- pated in short-term mission trips to Liberia and Belize. e! In order to solve a drainage prob- lem, Micah, our Facility Manager, and a few volunteers removed 25 trailer loads of dirt, removed an old tile drain, dug a trench, installed a new French drain, re-graded the playground, and then laid 45 yards of fresh playground mulch.
