EVENT NEW YEAR’S DAY HIKE WOW, it was cold! People in the northeastern United States started off the new year with low temperatures and incredibly cold wind chills. Island Beach also experienced its share of the frigid weather. The temperature at Interpretive Center on January 1, 2018 was nearly below freezing — and that was INSIDE the building. Barnegat Bay was frozen all the way across. Windswept snow blew across the beach and collected in drifts at the foot of the dunes. But the cold and wind did not stop 60 members of Friends of Island Beach and visitors from participating in the annual New Year’s Day hike. Everyone was well prepared for the weather with plenty of layers of clothing that left little, if any, exposed skin. We left the Interpretive Center and headed out to the beach on the self-guided nature trail. It was almost comfortably warm in the well protected thicket area but conditions changed dramatically as the trail broke out into the open dune area. With no protection from the wind it was a challenge just to get to out on to the beach. The cold conditions were almost forgotten when someone spotted a snowy owl. Although there have been a number of these magnificent birds in the park this winter, it is still a thrill to see one. Several professional wildlife photographers were snapping pictures using expensive cameras with powerful telephoto lenses. Even though our hikers kept a respectful distance, everyone was able to observe the owl as it perched on the top of a dune and occasionally took a bite of the rabbit it had captured earlier. Friends of Island Beach encourages everyone to visit the park in the “off season.” There are many things to see that the summer visitors can not imagine. Snow on the beach is so white it almost makes the sand look yellow. Ocean water freezes as it recedes from the high tide line filling upturned shells and making it slippery near the water’s edge. Loons dive for fish in the shallows close to the shore while long tail ducks and ring billed gulls seek food a little farther out. If that is not enough to entice you (Excludes Tobacco Products & Ice) cornerstonewines@gmail.com to visit Island Beach in winter, you should also be aware that the price of admission is reduced. - Jim Merritt Gertude M. WILDLIFE from the public and birding organizations, SNOWstorm takes a high-tech approach to unlocking the mysteries of these northern birds. Last winter was an irruption year, and a larger-than-normal number of snowy owls came to the New Jersey shore. On Nov. 29, 2017, raptor biologist Michael Lanzone — one of the founders of Project SNOWstorm —netted two young male snowies at Island Snow Owls in Beach State Park, with assistance from park personnel. The birds, nicknamed “Island Beach” and “Lenape,” were fitted with Island Beach custom GPS transmitters made by Lanzone's company, Cellular Tracking Technologies of Rio Grande, NJ.
