JADELLE (The Implant) It is standard that two appointments will be needed; the first to provide education (usually with the nurse) and the second to insert the Jadelle (the doctor will do this). You can refer to one of the contracted LARC providers for the Jadelle if the person meets the criteria (see LARC Contract Holder Section above). THE IUCD (Intra Uterine Contraception Device) FOR EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION This is more difficult to access as only a few doctors can provide this at short notice. People should try their own GP in the first instance and if they are unable to get an appointment, do not have a GP or are unable to afford cost then phone the MidCentral Health Sexual Health Service for advice. 12

CERVICAL SMEARS Priority women can have free cervical screening at any health service that provides smears. Priority women are; Māori, Pasifika, Asian, 30-69 year olds and anyone that have never been screened or haven’t been screened in the last five years. Priority smears are free and non-criteria cervical smears are Best Care Whakapai Hauora $20 from a nurse smear taker. By appointment only. Phone 06 353 6385. Practices belonging to the THINK Hauora Free to all priority women, other women cost depends on network each practice & whether enrolled or casual patient. Free for all priority women. Priority smears are free from a nurse smear taker, by Te Hā o Hine-ahu-one - Women’s Health appointment on Wednesdays. Provide free discretionary Collective smears for low income women. VASECTOMY SERVICES This is not done at Palmerston North hospital so there is NO FREE option for vasectomy in the Manawatu region. SNIP Vasectomy Clinic Dr Simon Snook visits Radius The Palms (Suite 4, 445 Ferguson St) monthly. Cost: $495 - includes pre-consultation, medication required, vasectomy procedure Bookings must be made directly with the Snip Clinic on 0800 377 647 (0800 DR SNIP). Low income patients who have a CSC may be eligible for financial assistant through WINZ. Patients do NOT have to be referred by GP – can self-refer Bruce Stewart at Aorangi Medical Centre in Feilding performs vasectomies for men from his, other GP practices or if not registered with a GP. Approx. cost = $440 if casual patients (less if registered at his practice). All vasectomies done on Friday mornings. * Financial assistance from WINZ: Special Needs Grant of up to $300 available if meet criteria Need to ring WINZ to make appointment Do not have to pay money back The clinic doing the vasectomy may need to provide a letter before WINZ appt. FEMALE STERILISATION / TUBAL LIGATION Can be referred to Palmerston North Hospital for this but scoring system for level of priority with many women not meeting criteria for approval. Women need to discuss this with their GP. The only other option is to be referred by GP to private gynaecologist which is high cost. 15

Abortion The Women’s Clinic provides free medical abortions in Palmerston North for NZ residents and women residing in the MDHB region. This includes medical termination up to 10 weeks and surgical TOP up to 15 weeks. They will organise referral for TOP over 15 weeks. Palmerston North Abortions are free to New Zealand residents (and those approved to be in the country for two years or more). A woman of any age can access abortion without parental consent or a partner’s consent. Abortion consultations are free from most GPs (but check prior with the practice). Some doctors can be personally opposed to abortion and may not want to do this consultation themselves, but they are required by law to refer on, in a timely manner. Maternity Care Maternity care is free for New Zealand residents (and those visitors approved to be in the country for two years or more). Midwives and GPs who are lead maternity carers (LMCs) provide free maternity care. Both will refer women to a specialist if there are complications during pregnancy, labour and/or birth. These specialists are available free in the public health system. Hospital birth and home birth are both options available and water birth can be planned at home (or in hospital if your midwife or GP provides this service). The only time that you pay for maternity care if is you choose to go to a specialist as your LMC or go to a specialist for additional maternity care under the private system. 16
OTHER SERVICES FAMILY PLANNING HEALTH PROMOTION SERVICE This service promotes a positive view of sexuality by providing professional development, resources, consultancy and support in the area of sexual and reproductive health and relationships. The following services are available through the Palmerston North office: Parent Workshops Early childhood and school services – mainstream and alternative settings. Professional development – tailor made for education, health and social service groups. Programmes for people with disabilities and their carers. Services promoting adult sexual and reproductive health. Resources - Family Planning is New Zealand’s largest producer of sexuality and relationships related resources. MANAWATU LESBIAN & GAY RIGHTS ASSOCIATION (MALGRA) Malgra offers social support for gay people of all ages and cultures, providing the largest space for activities and welfare in the Manawatu. PFLAG-Q Palmerston North PFlag Queer provide monthly meetings for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender and others who are Queer friendly and wish to discuss issues around sexuality, sexual orientation and the response of others to themselves. We provide the following services: Information on the law and prostitution Information on tax Support for sex workers in many different areas, ranging from support and advocacy, WINZ, IRD, Sexual Health, etc. Referral service to sympathetic counsellors and other complementary agencies Magazines for all workers within the sex industry. NEW ZEALAND AIDS FOUNDATION (NZAF) The NZAF focus on prevention amongst the group most at risk of HIV infection in New Zealand – men who have sex with men (MSM).
