Print & Pattern S/S 21 HomeSpun Good design grows better with age Give prints and patterns a hand-made quality to take minimalism in a more rustic direction Deeper than Indigo
HomeSpun Good design grows better with age The appeal of pared-down lifestyles has had – and will continue to have – a major impact on design, as the art of simplifying evolves with a deeper, more emotional heart. For S/S 21, this will result in products with a longer-term focus, whether through materials that soften or develop a patina over time, or designs that can adapt as our circumstances change. Utilitarian styles will become less stiff, and basics will become more special, whether through heavier stitches or more tactile fabrics. The Japanese principle of wabi-sabi, rooted in an acceptance of transience and imperfection, will be celebrated anew. In this direction, minimalism is full of life and attention to detail. It is imbued with a sense of authenticity, craft, and history, so that less really does become more. Loewe
Action Points HomeSpun presents minimalism with a sentimental edge, where everything seems to have been touched by the hand. Products are built to last, appealing to a consumer mindset of buying less but better, and prints and patterns feature muted designs. 1. Celebrate making and mending: use making and mending techniques (or take inspiration from them) to emphasise the value of products, and celebrate their unique appearance by focusing on delicate patchwork prints and repair traces. 2. Use authentic craft elements: incorporate hand-made qualities into your designs, such as simple repetitive marks, for an authentic crafted quality. 3. Make minimalist styles warmer: use minimalism as a starting point for your designs, but take it in a softer direction with warm pigmented colours, tactile finishes, and decorative but restrained motifs. 4. Embrace beauty in all aspects of nature: rough-edged stones and wiry weeds and blooms offer a more unusual reference point for natural themes. 5. Highlight nostalgic summer themes: use plaids, ginghams, and picnic and outdoor references to give designs a nostalgic and distinctly summery appeal. Calico Wallpaper
