NIAGARA HOMEGROWN WINE FESTIVAL JUNE 15-23, 2019 VISIT NIAGARAWINEFESTIVAL.COM FOR TICKETS | @NIAGARAWINEFEST
WELCOME HOME Early summer in wine country is a sensory utopia – the vines glow with freshly burst buds, the smell of tilled soil fills the air and aromatic wines awaken our taste buds. Each year, I love hopping in the car, rolling down the windows and letting the summer scents envelope me as I take in the beautiful landscape and explore the incredible wines that come from this region. As a native to Niagara, I’ve always found that it is a great place to taste the wines of summer – the cool-climate winemaking style lends itself to the vibrant characteristics of Riesling, Chardonnay, Gamay and the variety of Rosés that Niagara winemakers craft so well. The Niagara Homegrown Wine Festival is designed to let you explore the flavours of summer your way. For the adventurer, the $45 Discovery Pass lets you choose eight curated wine and food pairings from up to thirty wineries across the region. For the reveller, the TD Wealth Tailgate Party is the most anticipated event of summer, with over 1,500 guests tasting, toasting and dancing amongst the vines. For the culinary connoisseur, the new RBC Brunch in the Vineyard is the place to be, with eight of Niagara’s top chefs teaming up with wineries to compete for the ultimate brunch pairing. This June, I encourage you to discover all that Niagara’s wine country has to offer as you welcome the blue skies and bright summer sun - and be sure to follow us @niagarawinefest as we explore, taste and enjoy wine country this season. Dorian Anderson Executive Director, Niagara Grape & Wine Festival
MEET GRAPE KING C H R I S VA N D E L A A R "My family and I truly believe that all great wine begins in the vineyard, and the grape growers are stewards of the land and have as rich a history in Ontario as the soil they farm". Chris Van de Laar is a third-generation grape grower from Niagara-on-the-Lake and the 63rd Grape King. The selection of a Grape King is part of Ontario's history and an annual tradition that dates back to 1956. While the regalia has changed from a crown and cape, the King wears a chain that carries the names of all of the Kings that came before including Chris's father, 1985 Grape King Peter Van de Laar. Since purchasing the farm in 2005, Chris has expanded the operation with the purchase of three additional properties which have all been planted into wine grapes. The farm now consists of more than 110 acres planted with high-quality wine grape varietals as well as tender fruit crops. The fruit market that the family has operated for the last 66 years is well known for selling high-quality local produce and has many regular customers that have been buying their fruit from the Van de Laar's for generations. Chris and his high school sweetheart Laura, along with their daughter Erica and son Nathan, are thrilled to host the 2019 Homegrown Wine Festival at 13th Street Winery and Jackson-Triggs Winery, and to celebrate VQA wines made with 100% Ontario-grown grapes. ABOUT THE GRAPE KING The crowning of the Grape King is a long-standing tradition to celebrate grape growers’ excellence in viticulture, and to select an individual to serve as ambassador for Ontario’s grape growing industry for the year ahead.
