Solitaire Lodge at Leisure Tarawera Falls Hike The hike to the Tarawera Falls is an easy hike preceded by a boat transfer to the jetty at the start of the trail. Start by following the Tarawera River at its source (this river is trout laden and is the outlet for several lakes including Lake Tarawera). Tuis, tomtits, fantails and kereru are the native birds found in this area. The river eventually heads underground and then surges as a 65 metre waterfall from fissures in a large rock cliff face that was formed11000 years ago as an abrupt end of an ancient lava flow. A picnic lunch is provided and can be enjoyed at the bottom of the waterfall. There are swimming holes on the way. Lake Edge Walk (Self-guided) Take the shoreline trail from the Lodge, wander through native bush past holiday homes of local families or take the wetlands trail to view Solitaire from the opposite shoreline. Thermal Springs Natural thermal springs bathing in lakeside pools on Lake Tarawera. This excursion starts with a 15 minute private launch and takes you to the other side of Lake Tarawera and near to the site of the now lost Pink and White Terraces. Geo thermal activity in this area yields natural thermal pools and a hot stream with bath temperature bathing, a special outdoors experience. Recommended as a pre breakfast experience. Motorised Dinghies & Kayaks From the Lodge’s jetty you have a choice of boating options including motorised dinghies and kayaks. Paddle the protected waters of the Otumutu Lagoon, home to ancient Maori sites. See Black Swans gliding by in the protected waters as well as rare native bird life. Private Helicopter to Mt Tarawera & Orakei Korako Combine the thrill of landing on Mount Tarawera with a flight that includes spectacular aerial views of pristine crater lakes, stunning waterfalls and the vibrant Waimangu and Wai-O-Tapu geothermal reserves. Depart from Rotorua city lakefront pier or your lodge to experience the thrill of a private helicopter ride that lifts off and fly’s over Mokoia Island on track to the hidden lakes district and the Volcanic Peaks of Mount Tarawera. At 3680 feet in elevation this majestic volcano dominates the surrounding landscape and plays centre piece to the lakes which surrounds it. The helicopter will land on Mount Tarawera offering a privileged view of spectacular craters and domes formed by an eruption over a hundred years ago. Here you will enjoy an interesting commentary based on the region’s history, culture and geology. Then continue your flight to land at Orakei Korako, also known as “the hidden valley”, boarding a ferry (this may be shared with other passengers) to cross the river and begin your private guided 60- minute walking tour. You will see hot springs, gushing geysers and the natural beauty of this geothermal wonderland. Afterwards you will return by helicopter towards Rotorua, view the stunning Waikato River and the unique topography of the Waikite Valley, the sulfuric Lake Rotorua and the sacred island of Mokoia. The Marlborough Lodge at Leisure With 16 acres of sprawling gardens, park and vineyards, The Marlborough Lodge estate grounds is an oasis of flora and fauna. The vast manicured lawns and many gardens meander down to Spring Creek where you can enjoy the abundant bird life. Wander among the established trees or stroll to the vegetable garden, which includes homegrown fruit, berries, tomatoes and free range eggs, the produce features as part of our dinner and breakfast cuisine. Take your own peaceful wander or join our head gardener on our daily garden and vineyard tour, departing at 11am each day. Explore the grounds, learn about our gardens, trees and vineyard and finish with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. A chef tour of the estate garden and a cooking demonstration can be arranged. Enjoy the outdoor heated swimming pool, just a short stroll from the lodge and surrounded by the sprawling estate grounds. Relax and soak up the Marlborough sunshine poolside or work up an appetite by swimming some lengths in the 12 x 5 metre pool. Poolside service is available so that you can enjoy the beautiful surrounds whilst keeping cool and refreshed. Right next door to the lodge is the Rapaura Tennis Club, founded in the 19th century, offering six well-manicured grass courts for tennis games during the summer months. Private Guided Full Day Kayak and Walk Experience Meet your guide, then you depart for the launch point at Ngakuta Bay, just 20 minutes scenic drive from Picton. Your combo begins with a guided sea kayak tour in what is truly some of the best paddling in the Marlborough Sounds in the western arm of Queen Charlotte Sound. Within a short time you are exploring the shoreline, spotting rays and sea birds and learning about the lush native bush near the water's edge. Your kayak tour concludes a few hours later at the small settlement of Anakiwa. Here you can don your tramping boots and pack and depart on your guided hike of the Queen Charlotte Track from Anakiwa to Mistletoe Bay. This section of the track passes through some of the nicest bush of the whole 70km walk and is a moderate walk of around 3-4 hours (11km). Views, bush, beautiful beaches - this walk has it all! At the conclusion of the Queen Charlotte Track, you walk down to Mistletoe Bay in time for collection by a private water taxi at 4pm to return to Picton. It's a great way to finish - a thrilling boat ride with fantastic views back towards where you've been. Return time to Picton approx. 4.30pm - 5 pm. You are supplied with lifejackets, splash jackets, booties, spray decks and dry bags (including for your camera) plus a packed lunch. Private Wine & Art Experience Explore the unique arts and culture scene in Queenstown and historic Arrowtown, punctuated by sight-seeing and photo opportunities. You will be collected from your accommodation in a luxury vehicle and head to Coronet Peak to see stunning views over Lake Wakatipu, the basin and Arrowtown. This is a great spot for photos! You will then head down into Arrowtown, a lively, historic village, once the heart of the 1860’s Otago gold rush.
