Grand Traverse Woman Beth Price Photography By Liz Lancashire “When you guys opened, I never thought you’d make it.” Customers weren’t the only ones unsure about the possibility of an oil-and-vinegar-tasting shop succeed- ing in Traverse City. I was still new to town when I saw the Fustini’s storefront be- ing finished, and I scoffed at the idea as much as anyone. I had no idea that seven years later it would be such a big part of my life. I moved here from Portland, Ore., in 2006 with my husband, Michael, and our three boys. Michael owned an ad agency in Portland, where I also worked part- time, allowing me to spend most of my time at home with our then-small children. Life was good in Portland, but we were ready to slow things down a bit. As the city and the traffic quickly grew, we decided we wanted to live in the kind of place we were driving longer and longer to find for weekend getaways. We ended up driv- ing 2,500 miles to TC and found it permanently. We knew we were taking a big chance with this move, but we felt good about it as soon as we got here. A little too good, perhaps. We spent a year not working— not even looking for work—just enjoying Northern Michigan and having time with our kids. Unfortunately, we’d never heard the phrase, “A view of the bay is worth half the pay” until it was too late. It quickly became obvious that we’d have to use a wider set of our job skills to make it in this smaller market. Admittedly, it was pretty rough for a while before we really got our feet under us again. In order to be more versatile, Michael split his role as an agency creative employees. Grand Traverse Woman That is why, when I was presented with an opportunity to use my experience to mentor teenage girls, I jumped on it! Every summer, I get the chance to work with an amazing group of young girls, through the Life Works Girls program, offered through the local non-profit: the Traverse Life Center. Some of the young ladies in our group come from very challenging family and home dynamics. This program is specifically designed to help combat family breakdown and poverty. Through this program, we teach the girls necessary life skills and the value of good work-ethic and servant leadership. “We learn so much about ourselves from how we rise after we fall. I did more than just fall . . . I did a triple somersault, followed by a major face plant! But, I got up!” We pour every positive thing we can into them, to help them grow in character and confidence, and to help them increase their self-esteem and self-worth. In today’s society, this program is invaluable, and every teenage girl can benefit from these lessons. I only wish something like this existed when I was young. Feeling blessed that God is using me to help these young girls, I al- ways share my story openly with them, hoping that they will learn from my mistakes. If I can use the experiences of my “mess” to help at least one little girl go down a better and brighter path than I did at that age, it would make going through all of it worth it. Helping to steer them away from a life that I, with the grace of God, escaped from, would bring something positive out of my darkest days. Helping these girls fills me with such joy. There is so much POWER in owning your story. There is FREEDOM in sharing your story with others. And there is HEALING in using your story to help others change the course of their own story. Grand Traverse Woman Local mom creates book to help children with loss By Lindsey (Jonkhoff) Rogers As a funeral director at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in downtown Traverse City, I get asked a lot of questions. Some of the questions are pretty standard: “Why are you a funeral director?” … “Isn’t it hard to be around death all day?” … “Do you cry every day?” Then there are questions that are more difficult to answer: “Should we bring our 6 year old to the funeral or cemetery?” … “How do I prepare my children for what they will see?” … “How do I explain death to kids?” These questions kept coming up and I am sure they always will. As a parent myself, I know kids ask a ton of questions! Back in March, while brainstorming with my mom, Peg Jonkhoff, we came up with an idea that might help to answer those difficult questions. We thought a coloring book would be a great tool for educating families and their young children about death in a simple and honest way. Our funeral home had already been giving kids a teddy bear keepsake since the mid-1990s. So we decided to use that character as inspiration for the new book. And then it hit us: we should name the bear “Hannah Bear” after Perry Hannah, the founder of Traverse City and original owner of the building (once his retirement home) that is now the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Lindsey holds her new Hannah Bear coloring book and I was excited to get to work on this project and a few days later, while at home waiting for my plush toy outside the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
