Hog Feed News of the Wellington Chapter #9066 March 2017 SPONSORED BY HARLEY DAVIDSON AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND IN THIS ISSUE Director’s Report This edition includes: Iron Run Kia Ora, Waitangi Day ride I know I started my last Directors Report in a similar Ladies of Harley vein but I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate And plenty of other bits than…”Wow a lot sure has happened since our last edition of HOGFEED”!! We’re now well and truly into 2017 and the Chapter has had a lot on offer for members to get in amongst and enjoy, this includes everything from fundraising for Miramar Central Primary School, a couple of overnighters (including an epic Castlepoint trip), social rides around Welly, Ladies of Harley Dinner Rides, the Iron Run, normal monthly Chapter Ride as well as a mystery ride thrown in for good measure. I hope you’ve managed to find something to take part in and enjoy. Speaking of the big event of the past calendar, the Directors Ride to the Iron Run was fantastic with a fabulous 4 day ride to Queenstown via Bluff staying in Blenheim, Arthurs Pass and Milton along the way. The riding together with the scenery was nothing less than spectacular and made all the better by the great bunch of members we had on the ride down who saw to it that there was plenty of laughter and fun had by all. I must admit it trips away like this that really make belonging to a group like ours pretty bloody special. The Iron Run itself was a fantastic event and truly put paid to any ghosts of events past according to all I spoke with. Details of the 2018 event are yet to be released but aren’t too far away so stay tuned….bring on the 2018 event!! In terms of things coming up I see Evan has done his very best to cram in as much as possible through until the end of the year, so have a look at our activities calendar (via the Chapter website or Wellington HOG Chapter smartphone app) and check out what’s coming up. Speaking of what’s coming up later in the year we have already begun planning for our Christmas Party that we will hold at the Copthorne Solway Park in Masterton. We have booked that place out and have invited our CD HOG whanau to join us to make it a combined ‘Christmas’ cracker. Make sure you get in early to book your accommodation so you don’t miss out. The other thing I wanted to mention is that planning is about to kick off for our next Wellington HOG Charity Poker Ride following on from our inaugural event last year. A big thanks to those from last year’s organising committee that have put their hand up to make this happen. To keep things simple we have decided not to have an auction this year but rather focus on the ride and entertainment. I’ve been reflecting on the difference of the last few months now that we have a local dealer. Not to put too fine a point on it is has been outstanding having John Goss, Ian Shiner and the rest of the Motomart Harley-Davidson team up and running. Keep up the great work guys!!
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Finally watch out for our Members Survey that will be released in April. Your feedback is invaluable and helps us gauge whether you think myself and the Committee are generally hitting the mark or not for you as members, so I’d really encourage you all to take a few moments to complete it. HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Iron Run 2017 "How do you sum up 3 days on the road with like-minded people? In one word, Awesome. We started with a calm sailing to Blenheim where we all got together at the Top 10. I remembered the next morning why I hadn't been back for 40 years. Road noise. Solution if ever back is to drink more. Damp start on the Tuesday to St Arnaud with 12 bikes and met up with Cassius, Brian A and friends for Breakfast. Off to Murchison with a stop at Lake Rotoiti and many stops at road works. Bikes caked in mud. Off to Inangahua via the Buller gorge with the speed picked up a notch and dry lovely roads from here on in. Earthquake museum then next stop historic Reefton.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz The Station Cafe in Moana at Lake Brunner for nibbles and a stunning view The beautiful Otira Gorge Then our final stop at Bealy Hotel just the other side of Arthur's Pass were we enjoyed good food, good company and drinks. We can totally recommend the Hotel.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Day two Early start as a huge day in front of us. Dry roads. Darfield for breakfast. Chris off to Chch for a bike service and will catch up later. Once finished we head to the Rakaia Gorge.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Then Geraldine for a coffee and fuel. Next stop Oamaru for libations in old town. A short trip down the road to Moraki Boulders for lunch and the view. Back on the road and a regroup at the other side of Dunedin then in to the White Horse Hotel in Milton for dinner and a bed. Once again a great meal and cheap drinks. As this was our last night together I had decided to hold a fine session. Every one chipped in $5 for the alcohol and waited in trepidation. After extensive collection of misdeeds being dobbed in to me and verifying its correctness, yeah right, the fines were issued. Lots of laughs. Bikes secure and off to bed. Another early start. Off to Owaka for breakfast.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Locals advised not to go through Catlins as a bridge was out and the detour was heavily gravelled and rutted, so back to Balclutha and a stop in gore. Coffee then Invercargill for fuel and on to Bluff. Can't go there without having some Back to Invercargill then Lumsden and finally Queenstown where we split up to go to our Accommodation. We had great weather, fantastic roads with awesome scenery. The thing that sticks in my mind though was the friendships renewed and made. The fun had. The relaxed ride and stops. Hope to see you all on many rides more.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Thursday night HD put on an event for the helpers. Being one of them and having the opportunity to get some free food and booze, I went. Caught up with some old faces and meet some new ones. They did well. Spent Friday morning helping out with registrations then cruised to the club pub, the Ballarat, and had a few. Then off to the VIP event. HOG did a great job. Good bands. Great venue. No huge queues for drinks or food. Just finished a bit early.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Some got in to the theme more than others. Finished the night playing pool with the two Shane's, one with a y. FUNDRAISING MIRAMAR CENTRAL SCHOOL A huge thank you to you all for coming along and helping us to raise money for the school, we really appreciate it. From the Harley rides we raised $222.00. I hope you all got to try some of the amazing food from the stalls. As usual, the highlight of my food fair (after running around coordinating for a few months) was to go for a Harley ride. I absolutely loved it. Thanks again. A fantastic night had by all. Cheers Rachel Carr –PTA Ironrun and Roadtrip by Ian from Motormart This march my wife and I were fortunate enough to be asked to represent Motomart Harley Davidson at the 2017 Iron Run to Queenstown. As Motomart were displaying new bikes at the Iron Run Hub in Queenstown we had the opportunity to ride a brand new 2017 Road king “down south”. We planned a circular route and broke the trip down into fairly straightforward chunks. 1 Picton to Hamner Springs 2 Hamner Springs to Lake Tekapo 3 Lake Tekapo to Queenstown- IRONRUN- 4 Queenstown to Wanaka 5 Wanaka to Franz Josef 6 Franz Josef to Kaiteriteri- 7 DAY ON THE BEACH! 8 Kaiteriteri to Nelson 9 Nelson to Picton. Neither of us had really done any touring in the South Island and it was our first time riding down south too. We had a totally fantastic time; everything that people tell you about the South Island is true! So many beautiful views, mountains, lakes and all joined up by awesome motorcycling roads!! I would say that a Road Trip down South should be on everyone’s bucket list!! Waitangi Weekend Ride by Russell Only 3 club members turned up for this ride – Jayne, Evan and myself. Evan took the lead with me as Tail End Charlie, positions we kept to all weekend. A break at Foxton was followed by lunch at Viv’s Kitchen in Sanson. Riding conditions were good but there were some good wind gusts from the west. Our next stop was Wanganui for gas before we tackled the Paraparas, stopping at the Haukawa Falls for a break.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz It was a nice run through and got hotter as we moved further inland – 26 degrees - time to zip out the jacket panels and let the mesh panels cool me down. Our next coffee stop was in Raetihi before heading to the Alpine Lodge, Ohakune for the first overnight stop. Fiona had brought her campervan up to do some cycling and joined us for pre--dinner drinks and dinner at Lemongrass, their Thai restaurant. 307kms - Day 1. A sunny day greeted us Sunday morning so it was a short ride through to National Park for breakfast at the Station Café. After a hunt by all 3 of us for Jayne’s gloves, Evan found them in his pocket! The Raurimu Spiral lookout Our next stop was at the Raurimu Spiral lookout before heading through to Taumaranui for a refuelling stop. The Forgotten Highway was our next challenge, the gravel section being reasonably hard packed. Lunch was at the Whangamomona Hotel, shared with many Ford Mustang enthusiasts. After fueling up Stratford we headed to Patea for a coffee stop but nothing was open so we visited the local car museum instead. Our next overnight stop was Wanganui at the Quality Hotel where we were joined by Abe and Kathy who had ridden up that afternoon. 360.4 kms - Day 2.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Another sunny day dawned so it was off to the Virginia Lake for photos then breakfast in town. The plan was to link up with members from Wellington at Himitangi Vines but on reaching there found they were closed so change of plan and on to Foxton for lunch at the Little White Rabbit. Lindsay, Roger and Perry had now joined us. The run home was fine until we hit Manukau where traffic stopped. I ended up riding on the left of the parked or very slow moving vehicles until Otaki when the traffic cleared. A stop at the Sandbar, Plimmerton with Jayne and Evan saw the end to a great weekend away. 243 kms - Day 3. Under the Visor – Ian Shiner Wife (Cherie) and 3 daughters (Paige, Kirsty & YEARS IN HOG Lucy) Less than one SOMETHING YOU MAY NOT KNOW I was Matt Leblanc (Joey from friends) chauffeur OCCUPATION in London when he was making the film “Lost in Motomart Service Manager Space”. WHAT IS A SKILL YOU’D LIKE TO LEARN AND CURRENT BIKE BIG CHOICE!!- SHOP FULL OF HARLEYS! WHY? Play the guitar - just coz I think it would be cool to be able to knock out a tune! FAMILY Motomart Dealer Ride and Dinner, Kaitoke Five riders (Kent, Todd, Ian, Karl and myself) headed off from Motomart at 5.30pm for a ride over Haywards, around Whitby and the Grays Road and back over Haywards. Kent peeled off at Silverstream with the rest of us heading to Kaitoke Gardens for a dealer dinner. We were met there by Robin, Marie and Pat, who had decided four wheels was the better option given the forecast rain. It was an enjoyable ride and a very good value dinner.

HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz After the awards it was back to Queenstown to sit on the village green as the Screaming Eagles were playing again. I think they were even better than the night before. They were booked to play till 4 but stayed on till 6. Back to the Ballarat for the chapter get together as tomorrow we were all doing different rides home. Over the years I realise that you only get out of something what you put in. Thoroughly enjoyed the chapter ride down and the company. All in all a great event. 10 out of 20 to HD for this event. Bring on next year. Let's make it a big one. From there we headed over Haywards and around the inlet on the Whitby side before finishing up with lunch at the Butcher and Brewer’s in Petone. Although rain had threatened it ended up being a nice day and a lovely ride.
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz BRONZ Heart Kids Charity Ride This ride, starting from the Duck Pond at Avalon and doing a circuit up to Upper Hutt, over Haywards and around the inlet and then back in the motorway to the Petone Working Mens’ Club was one of the best organised group rides I have been on. Using professional pilot outriders for traffic control saw the group pack maintained throughout the ride with a smooth flow all the way. I was joined by Club members, Mick Teahan and Kevin Gray. It was also good to catch-up with Selwyn and Leah, former members. Lunch was followed by the presentation of funds raised to the Heart Kids representatives, including a large heart shaped beanbag to one of NZ’s youngest transplant recipients. Motomart Opening Day
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz Ladies of Harley Dinner and Ride Serah led this ride, started at 1841 in Johnsonville and headed out to the Sandbar at Plimmerton for a nice dinner outside (it was summer then!). Evan and Russell were the only other attendees. After dinner, it was a nice ride around the inlet over Haywards and back home. Tips from an anonymous Accountant Mechanic I hadn’t ridden the bike in a while, so when the battery went flat, I just assumed I’d be able to ‘crash’ or ‘ bump’ start the Road King down the hill from where I live, and all would be fine. Firstly, that actually doesn’t work for reasons I’ll explain a bit further on, and secondly, if you are stupid enough (that’s me) to crash start a bike with a drive belt, chances are you will snap it (around $1500 to replace), or at least reduce its life by half. My days with motor bikes ended back in 1986 when I sold my Suzuki GT 250 X7. It wasn’t a terribly sophisticated 2 stroke machine, in fact you could recondition the motor in around 30 minutes, which I did a couple of times. When the battery went flat you ran it down a hill, crash started it, and by the time the blue smoke cleared and you could see where you were going, the battery was half charged. No so with a Harley. They actually need a full 9 amps to both start, and most importantly to keep going – so even if you jump start it (using jumper leads connected to your car or spare battery I mean) as soon as you remove the jumper leads, the bike will stop. This is because the generator/alternator will not be able to feed that much charge into the battery that quickly. If you left the jumper leads on for a couple of hours then perhaps that might work. So if your Harley battery goes flat, you are best to remove the two power leads and charge it up for a half day with a battery charger. Those trickle feed battery chargers (they cost around $100) are a
HOG FEED www.wellingtonhog.co.nz very good idea and ensure that the battery is topped up all of the time so you don’t need to read rubbish like this article. Whatever you do, don’t try crash starting a Harley down a hill as it won’t work, you’ll damage the belt drive, and you try pushing 350kgs back up the hill. Story by Mick Big thanks to all the hog members who came on and organized the iron run 17 always had good advice to give and great to be with, enjoyed and time went to fast, great long roads, sweeping bends and a few tight bends along the way, allowance was given for my peanut tank, about 200k on full, so we had regular fuel & coffee stops! Did come back on my own via west coast and stopped at fuel stn fox glacier, after filling up the Harley wouldn't start, alarm went off, after about 5 minutes seemed longer! Lady came out of fuel stn and told me to push Harley down the road, thought that it might have been because of the alarm noise! Explained to her that I was going to change the battery on key fob as that might be the problem! Lady then told me this kind of thing happens all the time!! And if I pushed it down the road it might start! Pushed Harley short distance and yes .. it started . Lady in garage seemed to think it had something to do with radio frequency in area, so if you stop there... Enjoyed company of hog wellington and other hog members from other chapters who caught the ferry or who I met on way to iron run . Evan thanks for pointing us in the right direction had a briefing and map for us every morning on route , did try to avoid roadworks , on the ferry , he was able to show how the Harley alarm could be turned off , some riders had suggested leaving the remote within distance of the Harley , no need . Evan mentioned that he thought I was a bungee salesman as I had few holding my pack to the back of the Harley! We stopped along the way to buy rope as advised, thanks tana who warned me of the danger of bungees and advised straps. Thanks to Russell merchandise who on chapter night offered to share accommodation in Arthurs pass and Queenstown as I only managed to get time off work late, must mention bbh backpackers in Milton , owner tony let me put Harley in shed for the night , mentioned he had knuckle head And iron head sporty for sale and was happy to share his photo album of his riding days in 1968 in Switzerland with hog group cool guy . I have been cautious on bends as I came off in the wet last winter!! And appreciate advice on changing down and not using brakes. Evan sent me ahead at Invercargill to bluff had a phone call in Bluff from Evan asking where I was. I had gone up Bluff Hill instead of the point!! Still great view from the tower not to be missed! Did the thunder run and guided ride to Glenorchy attended the hog St Patrick party at ice area, good to see the auction for camp quality. Last night in Queenstown hog members had meal and drinks said farewells before heading back, I enjoyed there company and looking forward to the next ride.
