CONGREGATION OHEV BETH SHOLOM A Message from Interim Rabbi 1119 ELM STREET YOUNSTOWN, OH Dear Friends: PHONE: 330.744.5001 Counting is something that we take for granted after a OFFICE@OHEVBETHSHOLOM.ORG certain age. For most of us, using numbers in basic ways is WWW.OHEVBETHSHOLOM.ORG simple, uncomplicated, and unnoticed. We often learned to count to ten or to one hundred before we knew much more RABBI PAULA WINNIG about the world. As we age, we no longer count half years as we did when we proudly INTERIM RABBI declared, “I’m two and a half.” Time passes quickly mostly, and we take little notice of it. Yet Judaism goes against that tide with the counting of the Omer. The Omer is SANDY KESSLER counted from the second night of Pesach until the eve of Shavuot. We count off seven SPIRITUAL LEADER weeks of seven days and on the fiftieth day, we celebrate the Feast of weeks Shavuot. In Biblical times, Shavuot celebrated the offerings of the first fruits of the Omer SARAH WILSCHEK harvest. Omer means sheaves, referring to the sheave of wheat and barley harvested EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR during the spring and early summer period. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Today, the counting of the Omer has altered significantly, since most of us are not engaged in a harvest that includes harvesting grains such as wheat and barley. NANCY BURNETT Today, the counting of the Omer gives us the opportunity to be mindful of the passing MARK HUBERMAN of time. It reminds us to mindful of the gifts of time given to us to celebrate our CO-PRESIDENTS freedom and to focus our lives on the gifts of the Torah and the world around us. By JASON BOSTOCKY pausing to count the Omer, we take the time to notice the passage of time and the BOOKER KESSLER blessings that can be found in every day. CO-VICE PRESIDENTS Last week, just before Pesach began, I was in Poland visiting refugees from Ukraine. I heard their stories and saw the incredible relief efforts created to protect them and LINDA DAVIS enable them to survive. I saw firsthand the tragic results of war displacing people ROBERT RAWL from their homes and their country. Many were bewildered, lost, saddened, but, still CO-TREASURERS so hopeful. So mindful of the kindnesses offered to them by the many volunteers and DOUG ABBATIELLO the Polish government, who have given them shelter and assistance. Many are also SHARI DELLA PENNA fearful and afraid that they may never see loved ones, or see their homes, or their CO-SECRETARIES country ever again. We who live in freedom, we who live far away from the threats of war, need to spend BRIGITT BERK some time during this Omer period reflecting on the many blessings we receive daily. SALLY BLAU Our ancestors counted the Omer as a way of blessing and being aware of the benefits CO-PRESIDENT OF SISTERHOOD of a healthy harvest. And then on Shavuot they offered thanksgiving for the blessings they received and offered their first fruit offerings. Many years ago, my teacher Larry BETHANY GOLDBERG Hoffman wrote that we should do the same. Rather than looking at our checkbooks ALAN NATHAN and deciding after we have paid our bills, what portion of our “leftovers” we give to others. Dr. Hoffman suggested that we should participate in “first fruited” offerings. TOD NEWMAN We should make our donations first, then pay our bills and put aside our money for PRESIDENT OF BROTHERHOOD ourselves. KANDY RAWL There are many ways to count the Omer today, from apps, to online programs each CO-PRESIDENT OF SISTERHOOD day of the Omer. Many of these new ways include meditations and connections to bigger spiritual ideas as well. But all ask us to do the same, to take a moment each SAM A. ROTH day as we count, to be mindful and grateful for the blessings which abound in our lives, which often go unnoticed. FLORINE RUSNAK Thank you again for the many, many people who brought goods and made donations that I brought with me to Poland. I carried eight bags of products for a total of nearly WILLIAM TRACHTMAN 500 pounds of goods and had thousands of dollars donated which are going to benefit SAMIE WINICK the JCC of Krakow’s relief efforts. Thank you for allowing me to be a mitzvah emissary on behalf of our community. KIM ZIEDENSTEIN Happy Counting. ALEX ZOLDAN RABBI FRANK MULLER, D.D. RABBI EMERITUS Rabbi Paula Jayne Winnig | Interim Rabbi | Congregation Ohev Beth Sholom 2
A Message from Our Co-Presidents Dear Congregants, We watch with horror as history unfolds in the Ukraine- a battle for freedom and survival not unlike that experienced by previous generations. We watch helplessly feeling overwhelmed by the problems of our world, each day seeming to document situations over which we have no control. How do we balance being grateful for what we have with our compassion for those who have nothing? There are no simple solutions, but each day provides us with an opportunity to make a difference one small act at a time. Kindness and respect cost nothing, but the rewards multiply exponentially. We as inhabitants of this world need to take care of each other. We must find a way to appreciate the differences among us, to navigate a path to peaceful coexistence, and to learn to love others as we love ourselves. We are commanded to repair the world. Each of us needs to be thankful for what we have and not long for what we have not; we need to reach out a hand of friendship and hope to those who no longer have any hope- to make a difference in our own unique way and to create the world that was created for us. We have much to be thankful for at Ohev Beth Sholom. We worship in a beautiful sanctuary, its dome encompassing the safety and spirituality we seek. We are surrounded by friends both physically and technologically through our weekly hybrid services. We have a staff, organizations, and committees who work tirelessly to ensure a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We have spiritual leadership shepherding our spiritual growth, and a religious school providing a Jewish education to our youth. We have a Board of Trustees who meet regularly to oversee the growth and development of our united congregation. As the warm days of spring bring us renewed hope, let us find joy in all we encounter, and let us vow to continue our path to unity reaching out to each other along the way. Please join us for weekly services on Friday evenings and/or Saturday mornings as we honor the commandment to observe Shabbat. Be safe and well and thankful, Nancy Burnett and Mark Huberman Co-Presidents, Congregation Ohev Beth Sholom 3
