Review Here’s what we’ll be enjoying this month READ IMPASSIONED. POIGNANT. INSPIRATIONAL. THE PRISON LETTERS OF NELSON MANDELA The Prison Letters of Nelson Mandela, published on the centenary of his birth, are the first and only authorised and authenticated collection of correspondence spanning the 27 years he was held as a political prisoner. From when he was only allowed to write and receive a letter of 500 words every six months, to later, when these restrictions were finally loosened but letters still strictly censored, the book shows how Mandela maintained his inner spirits while living in almost complete isolation, and how he engaged with the outside world. The letters are organised chronologically from 1962 to 1990, from being imprisoned in Pretoria Local, Robben Island, Pollsmoor and Victor Verster prisons. The letters include those he sent home to his five children (a critical means of parenting in absentia), to comrades and old acquaintances (filled with optimism and a steely resolve to stay the course), and to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (in which he professes his love but also deep appreciation and moral support for her efforts on behalf A of the movement). The book, edited by Sahm Venter, who is senior GET ITK researcher at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, will be launched BOO CLoUicBe on July 10. Penguin, R425. This is a Get It Book Club choice, which means you can get it for 20 per cent less by signing up on www. knowledgeroad.co.za. ch WATCH A THRILLING ART HEIST ... BASED ON A TRUE STORY American Animals is the thrilling, true story of four young American men who attempt one of the boldest art heists in US history … all in an attempt to escape their ordinary lives and live out-of-the ordinary existences. The four university friends team up, taking cues from heist movies, and carefully plot their moves in order to execute the crime – the theft of some of the world’s most valuable books from the special collections room of Spencer’s college library. The film portrays the expe- rience through each gang member’s per- spective … before they know it, they’re in too deep and begin to question whether their attempt at adding excitement to their lives is a misguided endeavour aimed at achieving the American Dream. This Swedish brand has always been destination- oriented, focusing on vehicle accessories such as roof racks, and carriers for road sports (bicycles) and water sports (kayaks and canoes). However, it’s expanded to backpacks for laptops, travel duffel bags and technical hiking packs, and now there’s a new Active with Kids range ... everything from sports strollers to child bike seats, child carrier backpacks and more, so we can take our children along when we explore the great outdoors.
