11/16/2020 email.html Trailside Lodge is the iconic building sitting high on the hill in the middle of camp that is the heart of Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha. When you see Trailside Lodge for the first time it fits that perfect image of what a camp building should look like. You can feel the lake breeze through the historic windows and smell the old wood all around you. This year is a special year for Trailside Lodge as we celebrate its 100th year. Built in 1920, it has sat on the hill overlooking Arbutus Lake where years and years of laughter and friendships have blossomed. With the sound of doors slamming and campers laughing that echo across the piney wood hills, there have been thousands and thousands of happy campers coming in and out of this majestic building over the years. The unique and historic windows of the building were salvaged from the Old Library at the University of Michigan, which was constructed in 1883 and later demolished in 1918. To verify the authenticity of the claim, staff took one of the windows to the Bentley Historical Library in Ann Arbor and compared the window shape and style with the architectural drawings of the old library. Upon inspection the historians at the Bentley Library confirm the windows were indeed a part of that old building. That makes these windows in our beloved Trailside Lodge over 120 years old. It is believed that the original camp owner Edith Steere obtained these windows through a connection with her father who was a professor at the University of Michigan at the time. We have continued to preserve and restore Trailside Lodge over the years and there has been a great deal accomplished thanks to some very generous donors. The floors have been sanded and refinished, the windows have all been painstakingly repainted and reglazed, both the east and west ends have been returned to the original style and the outside has been stained. Our Maintenance Director, Richard Murray, has spent a great deal of time and effort in maintaining and preserving this wonderful building over the last 10 years. Happy 100th birthday Trailside Lodge! Camp without Campers - written by Chloe Castle, Harper Crosson, and Cassie Sessler Over the years, camp has become our second home. When camp was cancelled this summer, it was heartbreaking; it felt like we wouldn’t be able to go home, recharge and be ready to take on the next year. Shortly after camp was cancelled we thought we should still partake in a wilderness adventure trip and the June 2020 biker trip was planned! Check the Camp Instagram for some photos! There were 6 of us total undertaking the trip and strangely enough it felt very similar to how we feel setting off from camp as a cabin group. We saw other camp friends along the way, and of course reminisced about how much we love and miss camp! The sting of camp being cancelled was still fresh and we all voiced our concerns about what a year without camp might mean for all of us. It seems that each summer we leave camp with the confidence and strength that carries us through the coming year. This year we all agreed that “it’s not the place, it’s the people.” The biker trip came to an end and we all managed to secure summer jobs in the area, jobs we thought we would never have to get as we all were all planning to be AHWH counselors. We’ve all been to camp a few times, and the first few times it really hurt. It felt wrong being so empty, and like there was a piece of all of us stuck there. With each visit, the hurt got to be less and being at an empty camp slowly was not as sad anymore. When some of us arrived the night of the second file:///C:/Users/fkulh/Downloads/email.html 8/12
11/16/2020 email.html session virtual casino night and trudged up the hill to the Trailside Lodge as we had done hundreds of times, it felt so familiar but so different. Camp certainly loses a lot of its magic when it's empty, but over the summer we had become less reliant on the place, and more on each other. Camp friends are what make camp, not the place. They’re your best friends and will always be there for you not just at camp. Camp is just the place where you meet them. Without camp, none of us would have ever met, and if we hadn’t all come back to be on staff, we wouldn’t all be so close. So, if you haven’t talked to your camp friends this summer because there was no camp, pick up the phone, call them, text them, DM them; you don’t need camp to have your camp friends. BELATED HAPPY HALLOWEEN! With Halloween landing on a Saturday this year, with a daylight savings time change and a full moon... we hope you all survived the weekend! We were very excited to learn that the Arbutus Lake 2019 AD staff made a guest appearance in Times Square over the weekend. The full Super Saturday cast of the Wizard of Oz was featured in the spotlight. Thank you to Liz Longthorn and #spirithalloween #silvercastmedia for the opportunity. October Virtual Campfire was a fun night for all! Join us in December! There are so many things we all miss about camp and we have decided campfire songs should not be one of those things this year! We had a very fun virtual campfire in October and over 100 people zoomed in to sing along. We also had 670 views on the Facebook live video. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this happen, and a special shout out to Mark in Scotland for the visuals throughout the event. We are planning another singalong for December so stay tuned for a date and be sure to log on and join us. file:///C:/Users/fkulh/Downloads/email.html 9/12
