A MESSAGE FROM SUSIE Dear Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center Ohana: Kanu Hawaii invited Lanakila Senior Center to host a service project for Volunteer Week on April 23, 2022. There were 69 LMPSC members and community partners who came forward to pack sand bags to reduce soil erosion in and around the senior center and redirect water run-off away from the center’s property to prevent flooding, pick up trash left around the senior center, beautify and sanitize the senior center building and grounds, and made 650 ti leaf lei for Memorial Day at Punchbowl Cemetery. We thank our center members for their generosity of time and effort. You did a tremendous job! Mahalo a nui loa for the beautiful flower lei given by American Savings Bank employees for May Day and hand-delivered by Michelle Bartel and Tina Serikaku to our center. The seniors who received the lei express their thanks to ASB! Our heartfelt thanks to our Lanakila members and community partners who made over 6,000 ti leaf and flower lei over the past two months for the City’s Memorial Day at Punchbowl Cemetery. We appreciate Iris Fukunaga from the City’s Foster Botanical Gardens for inviting us to participate. Mahalo a nui loa to over 80 senior center members and individuals from the community, who made lei at home and every Wednesday and Saturday to honor our veterans. Lovely hula dancing by Lanakila’s dancers took place on Sunday, May 1, 2022, for the City and County of Honolulu’s May Day festivities at Kapiolani Park. Our members did a fabulous job, under the tutelage of Kumu Hula Harmony Brighter. We thank the musicians and assistant instructors who gave of their time and expertise to prepare the members for this special occasion. See the photos taken by Evan Ching in this newsletter that captures these moments beautifully. You ALL deserve this day and every day to celebrate, for all that you moms do! I do not have children and I don’t know how you moms manage your time/energy every day. To me, it is AMAZING! My mom was AWESOME! She had 9 children before the age of 30 years old and after my dad passed at the age of 51, she took the reins and went for it. After his passing, she learned how to drive, got a car, got a job at the U.H., worked at nights as a custodian became a Union Shop Steward and was a caregiver for her Mom too! She did retire Donald from the UH after 20 years but decided to drive a School Bus for Guerrero Robert’s for about 10 years. I know all of her History because I was there living with her then. I saw what, how, when she did ALL of these things, it wasn’t easy but she did it! As my eldest sister called her, “A strong cookie!” One of my moms saying, which I am still learning to do today is, “No one is going to do it for you, so “Get off your ‘Okole” and do it!” In fact, in our ‘Olelo Television, Kupuna Stories, she says this at the end, as a reminder and her Legacy to all her grand & great- grand children. My mom is my HERO and she lived to the young age of 93! -Midgeann Wright 3

Cultural Club Reports OKINAWA NENCHOSA CLUB UPDATE By Lari Koga Haisaii! We had a variety of May activities with many members & friends who participated. April 28: Denise Werle from Stretch & Tone, gave the members an exhilarating time with exercises that are done while sitting. It provides us with movements to our bodies without walking or running. May 5: celebrating Mother’s Day & her 25 years of teaching Okinawa dance, sensei Frances Nakachi & her students performed Okinawa dances. A small bento was offered to members. May 12: Aiko Sugai from the Yui Buyo class performed Okinawa group dances with students. Ms. Sugai opened with a solo dance. Two singers with a sanshin performed. Sumiko Nakasone performed the hula to “Nada Soso”. Ms. Sugai also led the members in exercises using motions from Yui Buyo. May 19: A special showing of a video of Misora Hibari, a popular Japanese singer was presented by Brian Suzuki. The 1950 video showed her month-long visit to Hawaii to help raise funds for the 442nd Battalion’s clubhouse. She was 13 years old & performed in Honolulu at the Civic Auditorium & McKinely High School, as well as the other islands. In her first performance in Honolulu, she heard a local person singing a song; she asked to learn it & sang it at the performance the next day. The song was “Wakare no Isochidori” by local composer, Frances Zanami. Ten years later she recorded the song. Mr. Suzuki shortened the 2 hour video to 1.5 hrs & provided English comments as the video was in Japanese. Nihee deebiru (thank you) to Mr. Suzuki from those who don’t know Japanese! June program will include karaoke, games, AARP sharing & taichi. Please join us! Become an Okinawan Nenchosa Club member. Dues are $7.00 for the year. 9
Cultural Club Updates JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Clarice Kumura Summer’s Here – Stay Hydrated June is a month full of activities such as graduations, weddings, vacations, and of course, Father’s Day. While this should be a fun month when the children are out of school, and we also spend a lot of time gardening, we should be aware of heat exhaustion. It’s important for all seniors to stay hydrated. As it gets warmer, it is more difficult to stay hydrated. The heat makes us perspire more, meaning we need to make up for this by drinking more water. So enjoy the summer with cool drinks! On May 2, we had our own members play games to celebrate Children’s Day. So much laughter when our seniors were playing children’s games. There were lots of prizes to make it even more fun. On May 9, Sharon Nakai brought a talented group as they sang Japanese and English songs. It was so entertaining to hear songs such as Jinsei Ichirou sung by Lorraine Tamashiro, My Blue Heaven by Sensei Marion Arakaki and Oldies Medley by Brian Suzuki to name a few. On May 16, we were entertained by the Zeni Daiko and hula by Naleo Nahanahe O’ Na Kupuna. It was very exciting to watch a variety of Japanese dance with implements, hula performances, and singing. We had another successful Show and Sell event on May 3. Our Japanese Club’s food, white elephant items, clothing and craft items sold very well. Thank you to all donors and participants. However, for indoor, in-person club and class activities, please make sure you are socially distanced. • Keep social distanced when meeting w/ anyone – staff, other center members and guests, and people in the community. • While masks are not mandatory (except on our Catholic Charities Hawaii vans), masks are highly recommended especially in indoor settings and when in large groups of people. • Please remember to wash your hands thoroughly, assist our center in sanitizing frequently touched areas before and after use (classrooms, door knobs, tables, chairs, etc.) • Please do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if you have not washed your hands well or used a hand sanitizer. • Please make sure to disinfect common use items, including phones, pens, telephones, monitor surfaces, etc. before and after use. • Everyone who has any cold related symptoms should STAY HOME.
