Abstract CMS 087 is an artificial collection that attempts to group into well
defined categories miscellaneous Italian-language documentation from the
eighteenth through the twentieth centuries.

Biographical/Historical note
The Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS) is an educational institute/think tank devoted
to the study of international migration, to the promotion of understanding between immigrants and
receiving communities, and to public policies that safeguard the dignity and rights of migrants, refugees
and newcomers. However, it has deep roots in Italy and in the Italian diaspora. CMS is a mission of the
Society of Saint Charles-Scalabrinians, founded in 1887 by Bishop John Baptist Scalabrini, whose name
the community later took, to minister to migrants in transit and in their new homes. As Bishop Scalabarini
was Italian, the community began with Italian immigrants, and continued to minister to the migrants as
their descendants transitioned from Italian immigrants to Italian Americans.
The typical setting for such ministry is a parish, with a pastor who cares for parishioners who live in
a certain geographic area or who share a need for ministry in a particular language. However, Bishop
Scalabrini experimented with other forms of pastoral care, including studying the forces shaping
immigrant and advocating for consideration of human rights in drafting laws and setting policy. Bishop
Scalabrini died in 1905. Almost fifty years later, in 1964, CMS was organized to revive his vision for
the pastoral care of immigrants in the form of collecting and disseminating correction information about
them and advocating for their human rights. As part of its mission, CMS created an archive to document
the immigrant experience. As part of its archive, it gathered Italian-language publications from parishes
where Scalabrini Fathers served and from various donors, and created this particular collection.
Scope and Contents note
CMS.087 is an artifical collection consisting of items received from various missions of the Society of
Saint Charles-Scalabrinians. The collection was initially brought together by archivist Nick Falco in 1989,
at which point its many items were grouped by subject. After 1989, however, new items continued to
arrive, and were shelved near CMS.087 awaiting further processing. Then, in 2011, CMS moved from its
long-time home at 209 Flagg Place on Staten Island to new quarters, at 27 Carmine Street in Greenwich
Village, and the acquisitions of the past twenty-two years had to be boxed and transported. In 2013, the
collection was transported to a second home, at 307 Easat 60th Street, and in 2018 resources became
available for processing the addendum.
The common feature of almost all items in the collection was that each item was a publication that
documented the Italian-American experience in some way. "("Almost all" because the collection does
contain an English-language publication, Pearls of Catholic Truth.) After that, the items in the collection
vary in numerous ways. In terms of time covered, the collection includes items from the eighteenth to the
twentieth centuries. Geographically, its documents span the United States from New York to California
and from Wisconsin to the South, and there is also significant material on Italy. Linguistically it contains

many items in Italian, some in English, and some in both. It varies in genre: books, church histories,
correspondence, newspapers, pamphlets, periodicals, population statistics, sheet music, and souvenir
journals. It also varies in topic, covering international migration, national events in the United States and
in Italy, and local events in many parts of the United States.

Scope and Contents note
There is a 1904 report in English titled The Society for the Protection of Italian Immigrants,
addressed to the directors and members of the Society by the President, Eliot Norton,
relative to the financial support and the services rendered by the Society. The report is
illustrated with photographs of the newly arrived immigrants, especially the children. In
addition, the series contains a small publication titled The Catholic Social Worker in an
Italian District, by Daisy H. Meseley, dated 1922. This is a booklet for the Catholic social
worker in the service of family case work among the Italian poor in the United States. The
rest of the material is in Italian, and includes a book, booklets, and periodicals published
in Italy pertaining to immigration. Also included are publications giving guidance and
information to the immigrant regarding the customs and laws of the United States. The
material is dated from 1888 to 1969.

Subseries 3: Italians in Wisconsin
Scope and Contents note
This subseries contains a map of the United States showing the areas with sizeable
Italian population and a tabulation of Italian-born and their children in New York City,
both taken from the 15th U.S. Census and published under the auspices of Casa Italiana,
Columbia University. There is a book published in 1912 with brief biographies of
noted Italians in the State of New York; La Citta' di Buffalo e i Paesi Circonvicini e Le
Colonie Italiane (The City of Buffalo and Other Towns, and The Italian Population)
published in 1908, and the November 1975 volume of Ethos, published in Buffalo and
dedicated to the Italian Americans of Buffalo. Included is Elizabeth Frazer's article "Our
Foreign Cities, New York," The Saturday Evening Post. (June 16, 1923). There are
two copies of this photocopied article starkly reporting on the squalid conditions of the
Italian people in the Little Italy of Manhattan. Finally, there is a study of the Italians
of New Haven, 1847-1900; and the Messenger (II Messaggero) dedicated to the 50th
Anniversary of the Italians in Kansas City, 1975.

Scope and Contents note
This small subseries consists of religious pamphlets from Italian churches, the history
of St. Rita, a Milwaukee parish staffed by the clergy who also founded CMS, covering
the years 1896-1930 and socio-demographic statistical data on the Italians in Wisconsin
compiled for the years 1896-1930. Included is an unbound History of the Italians in
Milwaukee , copies of The Italian Times of Milwaukee, published in 1982, copies of
The Kenosha News of 1976, and a 1983 calendar featuring the early Italians that settled
in the Milwaukee area.

Scope and Contents note
This subseries includes material on Lawrence Longo, who ran as Municipal Court
Justice in 1976 in Los Angeles; a copy of the 1975 magazine titled Bank of America
and the brochure of an undated A. P. Giannini's Scholarship Fund; the Anniversary

Subseries 4: Italians in California
Magazine of the 1972 San Francisco Columbus Day Celebration; a Souvenir Journal
honoring philanthropist Pietro Di Carlo at the 6th Annual Salute to the Maritime
Industry in Los Angeles in 1947; The Souvenir Journal of the Italian American Chamber
of Commerce of the Pacific Coast, and miscellaneous clippings.
It also contains material on the Italian Catholic Federation, the purpose of which was
to uphold and develop the religious spirit among its members and to spread that spirit
among the Italian people outside the organization. Included is The History of the
Catholic Federation, 1924-1974.
Lastly, it includes the papers of Cleto Baroni, from 1920s to 1950s. Baroni was the
editor and publisher of L'ltalo Americano di Los Angeles, and was a major influence
among Italians in California. The material included here probably represents only a
portion of his papers, and contains English and Italian correspondence. The Italian
letters concern the help needed by a battered Italy following the aftermath of World War
II; and miscellaneous letters regarding the well-being of the Italians in Los Angeles.
An item of interest is a letter written on October 15, 1944 by Dante Orte, an Italian
prisoner of war in California during World War II, in which he compliments Baroni
for his honest and non-partisan reporting. Orte reveals that the prisoners have come to
believe that the majority of the Italian people of Los Angeles support the Fascist regime
in Italy, and that the prisoners reluctantly give the impression that they are in agreement,
especially when invited to their homes. He concludes by extolling the virtues of this
nation, blessed by God, and hopes God would be ever so generous as to allow them to
remain here. For more on Baroni, see CMS 025 (James Visceglia Papers).
There are other miscellaneous letters, drafts of statutes of several Italian organizations;
several speeches by Baroni, including one given at the Columbus Day Celebration in
1950. The program for the day's festivities lists Gov. Ronald Reagan as a presenter.
Additionally, there are three books on the Italians in California, published by Baroni.
They are: Gente Italiana in California, 1928, which consists of brief biographies of
successful Italians in California; Guida Pratica Baroni di Los Angeles, 1930, which
contains a listing of the Italians in the professions, industry, and commerce in the Los
Angeles area; and two volumes of Chi Siamo nella California del Sud. This book
contains a historical sketch of the Italians of Los Angeles, with short biographies
accompanied by photographs of Italians in Southern California. Additionally, there is

a Souvenir Journal, a 75th anniversary commemoration, featuring the well established
colony of Italians in Santa Cruz and miscellaneous other items.

Scope and Contents note
This subseries consists of De Vanne's drawings, photographs of ancient sculptures,
miscellaneous writings on Evangelical Christianity, and several books. Included is
Regola Di Cinque Ordini D'Architettura by Barozzio Da Vignola, M. Giacomo. This
book, published in Rome in 1783 and still in fairly good condition, describes the five
orders of architecture.

Subseries 9: Italian Reviews and Italian Newspapers
This is a small subseries containing material on the Italian popular singer Carlo Buti
of the 1930s and 1940s; sheet music of a song composed by Enrico Caruso, and
miscellaneous musical programs. Included is a booklet and a playbill on theatrical
programs directed by Giuseppe Sterni in the 1920s and 1930s in New York City.

This subseries consists of sixteen newspapers in alphabetical arrangement, dated ca.
1911 to 1973 and published in the States of New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island,
Pennsylvania, and California. Included is a partial copy of La Fiaccola of Buffalo.
published in 1911, consisting of several poorly photocopied pages of the paper with an
article containing scathing attacks against Italian priests and the Catholic Church.

Scope and Contents note
This subseries is divided into material written in English and material written in Italian.
The material in English includes a booklet dated 1924, titled The Contribution of a
Great Race, which contains chapters on Italy's contribution to civilization, and historical
sketches on the History of Italy, World War I, and the Italian population in California.
There is a study on the Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, 1958; Amintore
Fanfani's "The Vinland Map" relative to the controversy over the discovery of America,
1965; Mario E. Cosenza's, The Study of Italians in the United States, 1925-1926; and
a pamphlet from The Circolo Matteotti of New York, titled Fascism, "Anti-Semitism
Rampant in the Editorial Room" of "II Progresso Italo-Americano." Included is a 1931
pamphlet titled The Italians in Contemporary America and three other miscellaneous
booklets.
Among the material in Italian are three books on Italian immigrants in America,
including, Edmondo De Amicis In America, concerning Italians in South America; and
two volumes of Italiani in America, published by Societa' Nazionale Dante Alighieri in
Florence, Italy, in 1942, containing a list of famous Italians that arrived in America up to

the end of the 16th century. Included is a book published in 1911 by Il Progresso Italo-
Americano concerning the Italians in the United States; and three pamphlets: one is on
Enrico Tonti; another concerns a speech delivered to the House of Deputies of the Italian
Government in 1889 relative to Italian schools in the United States, and the third regards
an Italian general's account of his three year mission in the United States. Finally,
there is the Almanacco delle Associazioni Italo-Americane, which includes a list of
Italian American Societies in the State of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and
Connecticut from the 1920s to the 1940s; Giacomo Grillo's I 65 Anni Delia Gazzetta
Di Boston, published in 1962; the program for the Festa Nazionale XX Settembre held
by a coalition of New York City-based Italian-American organizations to celebrate the
23rd anniversary of the Italian national government's takeover of Rome, organized by
the Societa' Italiane Unite on September 20, 1893 in New York City; and a pamphlet and
clippings extolling the virtues of the Italian people.

Scope and Contents note
The Miscellaneous Items subseries contains four folders of clippings with articles
on Italian Americans in Long Island and New York City, a folder with several
Italian American publications, and bulletins from Italian Charities of America. The
clippings, mostly from Long Island papers, dated ca. 1950 to 1984 are not arranged
in chronological order. Included is material on Ellis Island, donated by Dr. Peter
Sammartino, who was the president of a committee to restore Ellis Island; birth
certificates and passports of Italian immigrants; material on the Italian Sports Hall
of Fame in Illinois; and reports on La Rosa Spaghetti Co. and the Italian Wine Co.,
Walland, Ontario. There is a file with photocopies of an undated page of Labor News
in New York State, with the heading: Wage Rates 100 Years Ago: Wages paid during
the construction of the New Croton Aqueduct, 1864-1871, and the new Reservoirs,
1871-1875. The Common Laborers' classification is of special interest, it is divided into:
Common Labor, white; Common Labor, colored; and Common Labor, Italian. Together
with this file are photocopies of an advertisement of property for sale in Woodhaven,
Long Island, N.Y., with a notation: Italians excluded. There are photocopies of drawings

Subseries 12: Correspondence
depicting scenes with Italians and their difficult life in the early years of immigration
to the United States; material on John Basilone and Don Gentile - two Italian American
heroes in the U.S. Army during World War II; a copy of the 1961 Saturday Review
with articles on Italy, and miscellaneous other items. Finally, there are materials on the
Staten Island Italian Historical Society, founded in 1947, with Dante Santoro as the
Executive Secretary. Included are the programs for the Meucci commemoration in 1935
and 1936, and Santoro's articles on Meucci, Giuseppe Verdi, Giuseppe Garibaldi and
nine articles published in the Staten Island Transcript in 1950 on famous Italians and
their contributions to the United States.

Scope and Contents note
This subseries is a small one containing eight letters. Included is a copy of a handwritten
letter by Pope Benedictus XV to the Scalabrini Order; two letters written in 1911 by
Giovanni Pascolo, the Italian poet, relative to the request to write the inscription on the
statue of Dante to be erected in New York City on December 12, 1911; an October 19,
1945 note by the celebrated tenor Enrico Caruso, thanking Agostino De Biasi (publisher
of the Italian literary magazine II Carroccio) for his birthday greetings, and a 1906 letter
from Ruggiero Leoncavallo, written in New York City, thanking De Biasi and the Italian
people for their hospitality during his visit in this country. Finally, there are three letters
written in 1935 by Giovanni Schiavo to Fr. Fusco of Mt. St. Peter, New Kensington, PA,
concerning Schiavo's publication of Italian-American Who's Who.

This series is divided into six subseries: the Franciscan Mission in the United States, the
Salesian Fathers of Don Bosco in California; St. Frances Xavior Cabrini; Printed Material
relative to the Catholic Church and Immigration; Histories, Anniversaries, and Souvenir
Journals of Italian Churches and Pastors; and Miscellaneous Printed Material of Saints and
Churches in Italy.

Series III: The Catholic Church
The Franciscan Mission in the United States subseries contains a 10" x 14" book with 98
pages in Italian, documenting the inception of the Italian Franciscan Missionary work in
the United States (1855-1925). Included in this richly illustrated book are descriptions
of the foundation of the College of St. Bonaventura and the first Franciscan Missions in
New York City, Boston, Pittsburgh, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Albany, N.Y. Included is a short
history of the Church of St. Anthony in New York City written in 1986 to commemorate
the 100th anniversary of the Church.
The Salesian Fathers in California subseries contains souvenir booklets relative to the
Commemoration of the Beatification of Don Bosco held in San Francisco in 1930, the
Golden Jubilee of the Salesian Fathers in California, 1897-1947, the dedicatory services of
the Italian Church of SS. Peter and Paul in San Francisco in 1954, and the Golden Jubilee
of Fr. Raffaele M. Piperni, Pastor of SS. Peter and Paul, May 20, 1917. Each booklet is
illustrated with numerous photographs and the history of the occasion.
The St. Frances Xavier Cabrini subseries consists of a biography of Mother Cabrini
in Italian; a poem in honor of Mother Cabrini, two copies of a study on the Cabrini
Philosophy of Education, by Rose Basile Green, and a 1979 and 1980 Saint Frances Cabrini
Dinner Dance Journal given to the Cabrini Medical Center in New York City. Printed
Material relative to the Catholic Church and Immigrants subseries contains the program of
a reception in honor of Cardinal Hayes of New York and Cardinal Mundelein of Chicago,
held in Rome, April 7, 1924. The reception was in recognition of the prelates' concern for
the Italian immigrants in the United States. Also included are bulletins, photocopies of
articles concerning churches, priests and immigrants.
Histories, Anniversaries, and Souvenir Journals subseries of Italian churches and pastors
from New York, Indiana, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and
Illinois.
Miscellaneous Printed Material subseries contains material relative to churches and saints
in Italy. Included is an illustrated 12" x 17" book, titled Bellezze D'Italia - La Citta' Del
Vaticano; Director: Mario Giordano, published ca. 1930 by E.I.A. Milano, featuring the
dedication with large photographs of the Holy Father Pio XI; the King of Italy; Cardinal
Gasparri, who was the Vatican Secretary of State, and Mussolini, the Head of the Italian
government. Following the dedication are the following chapters: 1) articles on the Lateran
Treaty between Italy and the Vatican; 2) the Administration of the Vatican and its artistic

treasures; 3) the major basilicas outside the Vatican in Rome; 4) the most important

This series includes an article titled "From Romanism to Evangelical Christianity", by
J.B. Bisceglia (1949); a book by the founder of the Independent Catholic Church in Italy -
Paolo Gullatti; and three folders containing photocopies of material researched for a thesis
relative to the Italian Protestant Churches in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Series V: Italian History 1911-1985

Scope and Contents note
The Italian History series is divided into three subseries: Books; Magazine and Journals;
and Articles and Miscellaneous Material. The books are alphabetically arranged using the
author's name. Included at the end of the series is a subseries containing five publications
on the Italian patriot - Giuseppe Garibaldi. Also included is a 13" x 16" book titled, La
Guerra Che Noi Preferiamo (The War That We Prefer), published in New York City, dated
the 17th year of the Fascist Era (Mussolini came to power in 1922, therefore, it was printed
in 1939) and begans by extolling the advent of Fascism in Italy. An important feature
of this book are the numerous illustrations, and quotations from speeches delivered by
Mussolini. In addition there is an historical sketch of Italy during the aftermath of World
War I, and the ascendance of Fascism in the early 1920s. The book contains chapters on the
Armed Forces in Italy, the organization of the youth, and the enormous programs of public
works that were initiated. In every region of Italy there are examples of new buildings,
roads, bridges, hospitals, recreation facilities, and schools. There are chapters on the new
colonies acquired in African countries of Libya, Ethiopia and Somalia and chapters on

Scope and Contents note
The material in this series is comprised of studies on the following writers and musicians:
Giacomo Leopardi, Giovanni Verga, Edwardo De Filippo, Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo
Puccini. There is a book titled La Missione D'Italia Nel Mondo and several booklets on
poetry by regional Italian poets and material on the cities of Naples, Pompei and the island
of Sicily. Included are copies of three magazines on Italian culture: Leonardo, Rassegna
Mensile Delia Cultura Italiana, dated 1925 and published in Rome; Fiori e Sorrisi Italici,
published in New York City from 1913 to 1914, and Cesare Barbieri Courier, published
by the Center of Italian Studies at Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., dated from 1959 to
1967. Also included are two volumes of De Glauco Scilla, II Volto D'Italia (Countenance
of Italy). New York: La Lucerna, 1949. This 11" x 14", 890 page book, describes the
regions of Italy with illustrations of its artistic treasures. At the end of the book, there
is a biographical sketch of the individuals and companies that contributed toward its
publication.
