View from the Hill Then you will know that that I am the LORD your God, and that there is no other. Joel 2:27 Let's imagine for a minute, you are all ears of wheat, or corn, or barley. What growing season have you had? Are you parched, not enough refreshment during the summer? Did you get planted in soil without enough fertiliser? Maybe you are thinner and weaker than you should be. Perhaps pests have laid their eggs on you and you are being nibbled by small mouths, something else growing while you are diminishing. Did the rains come so hard that you were flooded, too long under water, your roots rotted? Did the late storms come? Battering you to the ground, sodden with hail stones? While we're there, mice and rats come to eat our grains. We have no defence except to wait for sun and drying wind. Life can be very hard. But even so, you here have grown somehow, avoiding the mice and crows who wanted to eat your seed, the animals that burrow and disturb roots when young. You might have scars, disease, misery, as well as the joy of feeling the sun on you and the wind in your hair. So now it is harvest time. Long ago the harvesters used knives, sickles, simple combines. The ears beaten flat were lost, rotting on the ground. Clever agricultural engineers built machines that could lift the ears up and harvest them. If people are so clever that they can design ways to rescue crops, how much more amazing is God our Father, who can pick us up no matter what our circumstances, how beaten, battered, nibbled we are. Even rotten and half degenerating, God can rescue us. God wants us to grow tall, strong, to blow his wind of the Spirit through our heads, to see us nurtured with the right amounts of rain, nutrient and sun (symbolising Scripture, loving care from our neighbours, and understanding of God’s supreme love for each of us). This life is not how God wanted it to be for his children.
We have one idea about God's power, mercy and love in the cycle of the field, preparing, sowing, growing and tending, harvesting, and enjoying the fruits of work. By lifting up our heads and asking God, he will send a harvester for us, someone to pray, to bring us close to that Love that knows no barrier, no limit, no holding back. For if time or circumstance has brought us to the end of our life, God offers Christians eternal life. If at harvest time, or in the still winter days, we find time to stop and reflect, we might see times when God has fed and watered us, sent help, brought a comfort, given us a time of rest and recovery. Then we can also see when we have been that help or comfort to others. I pray for all our readers. Peak Five – Pondering in the Peak – October Harvest celebrations are in full swing and so it’s a busy time for the Agricultural Chaplaincy as the team go out to lead and preach at services across the county. I really enjoyed being with the congregation in Thorpe on the 23rd September to worship and celebrate harvest followed by a very generous portion of meat pie at the harvest supper! Of course, harvest is a time to remember the generosity of God which we can see all around us in the natural world. Our participation in creation is essential to make the most of all that God provides, and so, we also thank our farmers for their hard work in another challenging year. However, I wonder if God’s generosity is much more than the abundance of good things that we receive and give thanks for? As Jesus warned in Luke 12, life does not consist in the abundance of possessions; it’s how we use what we have that matters as the parable of the talents suggests in Matthew 25. In the book of Acts, we often find that generous giving is a sign and mark of the Spirits power at work and generosity is described by Paul as a fruit of the Spirit. As we seek to be a generous people, our own generosity is an expression of love for God and neighbour. Every act of generosity starts as a decision in our hearts with some help from our heads! I want to thank you all for your generous welcome and support as I continue to enjoy my ministry experience in the Peak Five. It’s wonderful to discover the God of generosity in our everyday encounters and grow in faith as we learn together. I will certainly be enjoying this harvest season in the form of numerous apple crumbles, and try and remember that generosity starts in the heart in response to God’s generosity to us. Rev’d Alan
Group Community Fire Safety – October 2018 Now we are moving into the cooler weather here are a few facts and tips to keep you safe: Did you know? • Around 100 fires a year are caused by faulty electric blankets. • In England on average, 7,600 chimney fires occur every year Heating your home. Central Heating Systems • Have your Boilers, Fires, Flues and Cookers inspected and tested by a ‘Registered Service Engineer’. Open fires. • Be careful when using open fires to keep warm. Make sure you always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers. • Make sure embers are under control and properly put out before you go to bed. • Keep chimneys and flues clean and well maintained. Heating your home (portable heaters). Keep heaters away from • Always unplug electric heaters when you go out or go to bed. • Try to secure heaters against a wall to stop them falling over. • Only use gas or paraffin heaters in well-ventilated areas. Heaters consume oxygen so you could suffocate if a room is not properly aired. Using electric blankets. Never use hot water • Unplug blankets before you get into bed, unless they have a thermostat control for safe all-night use. • Store electric blankets flat, rolled up or loosely folded to prevent damaging the internal wiring. • Test electric blankets every 3 years. • Try not to buy second-hand blankets and check regularly for wear and tear. Replace your blanket when it is more than 10 years old. If the electricity fails. Be prepared, Keep a torch and batteries handy, where you can find them.
Alternative lighting Keep a battery operated • If you have to use candles or matches always take special care. Put them out completely before leaving the room or going to bed. • Use a snuffer or a spoon to put out candles. It’s safer than blowing them out when sparks can fly. • Make sure candles are secured in a proper holder and away from materials that may catch fire – like curtains. • Keep a mobile phone handy so you can still make an emergency call if there is a power cut. Smoke Alarms. Please ensure you have a ‘Working Smoke Alarm’ on each floor of your property. Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service recommends that you test your smoke alarms every week. Please remember to test smoke alarms for older relatives and neighbours who might find it hard to reach their alarms but are at greater risk - over half the people who died in home fires last year were over 65 years old. A working smoke alarm can buy you and your family the valuable time you need to get out, stay out and call 999. But you're more than four times as likely to die in a fire if you don't have a working alarm. By pushing the test button on every smoke alarm, people could save the lives of their nearest and dearest - children, parents and friends alike. Planning your Escape Route. If your fire alarm does sound, and you need to get out of the property it is always best if you have an escape plan ready and that the whole family knows where to go and what to do. Follow the basic instructions below to help you effectively plan your escape: ▪ Plan an escape route and make sure everyone knows how to escape. ▪ Make sure exits are kept clear. – Remove obstructions! ▪ The best route is the normal way in and out of your home. ▪ Think of a second route in case the first one is blocked. ▪ Take a few minutes to practice your escape plan. ▪ Review your escape plan if the layout of your home changes. ▪ Keep door and window keys where everyone can find them. If you require any further advice on any of the items covered in this article please call myself on 01332 831794 or the Fire & Rescue Service on 01773 305305 Keep safe, my regards to you all. Thorpe COFFEE MORNINGS We had a very pleasant Coffee Morning on September 19th. More people than usual were able to attend which was great. A group of seven walkers from Lincoln, who were staying somewhere locally, came in to join us and they spent quite a lot of time chatting with us. It was a year ago when our Vicar, Carollyn McDonald, joined us for the first time on September 20th, two days after her licensing service. So it was lovely that she came along to be with us again. As a result of all the generous donations a total of £65.20 was given in aid of The Community Farming Network and a cheque for this amount has been sent to them. Since our August Coffee Morning a letter has been received from Vicky Ryan, Community Fundraising Manager of the Midlands branch of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, to thank us for our donation. She writes: ‘The amazing £55 you donated will change the life of a deaf person. Please thank all supporters and attendees. You have given a deaf person their independence by helping to train one of our amazing dogs to alert them to sounds they would otherwise miss that so many of us take for granted like the alarm clock, doorbell or a lifesaving smoke alarm’. She went on to add: ‘Your donation will help a deaf person gain the confidence they need to escape the isolation that deafness can bring. A deaf person will now get the emotional support and companionship they need to get back out and about and feel part of their community again.’ Future Dates: October 17th and November 21st in the Village Hall at the usual time between 10.30 am and 12 noon. The charity to benefit from any donations on October 17th will be Readycall who provide befriending and practical support to people over 60 in the Derbyshire Dales, who are isolated, vulnerable or lonely. Please do come along. Everyone is more than welcome. R.H.
HARVEST SUPPER It was good to see the village coming together again for the annual Harvest Supper. Thank you to all the many helpers, before, during and after the supper, many offering their services before being asked. A very special thank you to our two auctioneers (Chris Wainwright and Matthew Round) who, yet again, managed to extract so much money from us all! We are grateful to Danny and his team at Marks Butchers for staying late at the shop to cook our pies ready for collection at 6.30pm. Also to Runway Café in Ashbourne for donating the tins of mushy peas. The grand total of £790.80 was raised which will be split between Padley Centre in Derby and Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). Again, many thanks to everyone. S.S. Would you like to do an activity with friends? Sign up for a free taster to try out Nordic Walking. Nordic Walking poles are planted behind you to propel you forward. The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs. This means you work harder than usual (burn 30% more calories) yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier! Dates: Wednesday 17th October at 10am. Meet at the National Trust Visitor Centre, Ilam Park DE6 2AZ Wednesday 24th October at 10am Meet at the Barn, Green Farm, Thorpe DE6 2AW Please wear walking boots & dress according to the weather. We were lucky to welcome Ian Skye from the Breakfast Show to the village on the day. Local Projects Fund from Derbyshire Dales District Council There is still £600 in the pot for any of the villages to claim from the Local Projects Fund at the District Council. You may recall that Tissington Parish Council claimed funds for a bench by the pond and Parwich Parish Council have claimed funds for paly equipment in the village. A special thank you to Sir Richard for the projector and the screen, to Laura DeBell for handing out free cupcakes, and to Carol Unwin and David Walker for the bottle of wine for the raffle. A BIG thank you to Laura DeBell for her hard work at the entrance and selling raffle tickets, and to Carol Unwin for handing out the free soup, tea and coffee. Despite the clouds it was a huge success and we made £395,64 for our charity. The 5 telescopes at the raffle did find a good home and we hope it will inspire the new owners.
