Great Wood Home Learning Recommendations Year 2 11th - 15th May 2020 Hello 2S and 2H, Well done on your hard work and thank you for all the pictures you sent in to us last week. It was brilliant to see so many children trying their best to complete home learning and putting in 100% effort. We still seem to be blessed with beautiful weather and we hope you’re all managing to enjoy time outdoors. This week we have tried to create plenty of variation and have included a Design and Technology challenge, art activity and a music activity to take part in. We hope you enjoy these projects. We hope the children enjoy seeing what their friends had been up to last week. Please remember to send any pictures through by Thursday if you would like them to be included next week. We’d particularly love to see your home-made board games and your portraits of people you miss in lockdown matched to a song. Maths We have included in the timetable daily activities to practise maths skills which have been taught already at school. This week will be focusing on shape! This is a super fun and usually “hands on” topic but don’t worry if you don’t have shape toys at home! We have included as many online games as we could find. Shapes can be found all over the home so to finish the week off, why not go on a ‘shape hunt’? On IXL look for the ‘skills recommended by your teacher’ section (changed on Sunday). We suggest you spend 10 minutes here and there practising these skills at home, to keep up your child’s interest in the challenges. For each skill, we would like the children to aim for a score of 70-90. Also, go to diagnostic and “step into the arena” to get quiz questions on a variety of topics but please tell them to click ‘I don’t know yet’ rather than helping your child along if they are struggling with a question.. IXL is meant to be completed by the children independently and will make questions easier if questions are answered incorrectly. ❏ IXL ❏ Maths interactive games by year group. A small file to download for each game (free) https://garyhall.org.uk/primary-maths-resources.php Reading and Phonics ★ Reading: Try to keep reading for pleasure as much as you can at home. Keep that brain muscle sharp by reading a variety of things each day. This could be fiction, non-fiction, recipes, instructions, magazines, subtitles on your TV or suitable websites. ★ Listening to audiobooks: An absolutely fantastic resource is https://stories.audible.com/discovery. This is usually quite expensive, but they have made all their children’s books free for the entirety of lockdown. It also means that children can enjoy stories together and listen at the same time. A lovely thing to do whilst drawing or making Lego models etc. ★ Phonics: To keep up word reading skills, the website we would recommend is phonics play. The children are used to all of the games as we use this website a lot at school so know how to use the site independently once logged in. In year 2 we aim to consolidate and practise spelling and reading of all sounds so any activity on the website is suitable. PE and Keeping Active The beautiful weather has returned and long may it continue! We hope that you are still enjoying some fresh air or keep physically active from your homes. It is super important to keep the body active especially when spending so much time at home. These are our recommendations for daily exercise (or perhaps even more than once daily!) ● Joe Wicks ● Cosmic Yoga ● Strictly Come Dancing video tutorials ● Andy Wild’s workouts ● Go Noodle
Dinosaurs Topic Did you enjoy learning about Mary Anning and what dinosaurs ate? We have heard back from lots of you who were very excited about it! We would recommend these child friendly websites if your child wants to do research and find out more. DKfind out https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/search/dinosaur/ and Britannica School (foundation level) https://register.britannica.co.uk/Lancashire_Virtual_School/ (school ID is lvschool to login). Just another quick reminder to use this timetable in a way that best suits your family’s needs, there is no expectation for you to complete every single activity! All Maths and English we have set for home learning intends to embed and reinforce prior learning rather than introduce new concepts and skills to children. We will pick up where we left off when we are finally back in school. Feel free to explore the websites we have directed you to such as IXL, espresso and BBC bitesize but be mindful we may direct you to other activities at a later date.
