CLOVER LEGUMES White and red clovers both provide a good source of protein as well as high intakes, fixation of nitrogen and improved soils. WHY USE CLOVER? • Rich in protein and minerals - excellent for finishing cattle and lambs • Improves soil structure and drought tolerant with deeper tap roots • Later growth provides valuable nutrition when grass growth starts to decline • For grazing and silage - can increase yields by up to 15% • Nitrogen fixing up to 180kg N/ha (white) - 150-250kg N/ha (red) reducing the need for bought in nitrogen • Very palatble encouraging high intakes, leading to higher liveweight gains and milk production * Red clover is high yielding 10-14t DM/ha, and is particularly high in protein ESTABLISHING CLOVER SEED RATES WHITE CLOVER RED CLOVER In mixtures use 0.5-1 kg/acre In mixtures use 3 kg/acre Overseeding 0.5-1kg/acre Monoculture use 6 kg/acre • A clean, firm seedbed, ring-rolled prior to sowing • Soil pH of 6.2. If ground conditions permit, apply lime 2–3 weeks before spring nitrogen application to fields destined for silage • Apply nitrogen up to 50kg N/ha (20kg N/ac) but not during the establishment period as clover is sensitive to nitrogen during this time • Sow 5–10 mm, sown into warm soil above 10°C between April and August • White Clover: Broadcast Red Clover: Drill OVERSEEDING CLOVER Graze tightly or harrow before sowing to open up the sward, ensure soil is disturbed to allow good seed to soil contact. Broadcast the seed preferably, but avoid May and June when grass growth is most vigorous. Graze hard after 4-5 weeks for 3-4 days to keep competition plants to a minimum. 20 Carr’s Billington Grass & Forage 2022
CLOVER LEGUMES Always maintain a soil pH of at least 6.2 and P & K indices of 2 for optimal clover content and health. MANAGING WHITE CLOVER Perennial legume with a creeping growth habit, putting roots down at each node. • Avoid excessive stolon damage from poaching • If clover content is too low, do not allow grass to shade it out. Make sure it is grazed frequently, or take the field out of the grazing rotation before the plants gets too mature • Keep grass at 4–6 cm over the winter to protect stolons from frost damage • If clover content is too high, use intensive grazing or strategic nitrogen (N) use to increase grass growth MANAGING RED CLOVER Red clover only grows from its crown, which lies above ground, so its very important to protect this part of the plant. Lasts 3-4 years. SILAGE • Graze swards lightly in autumn of the sowing year • For high-protein - cut when clover is in late bud, or early bloom for lower protein content • Avoid crown damage by not cutting too low 7–8 cm • Take 2-3 cuts at 6–8-week intervals after a first cut • Do not use a mower conditioner. Leave in wide swaths and wilt for up to 48 hours, turning the swath once. To reduce leaf shatter do not ted GRAZING Use aftermath to graze lambs or cattle. Avoid grazing in wet or damp conditions to limit bloat and reduce risk of poaching. Breeding ewes should not be fed red clover 6 weeks either side of tupping Carr’s Billington Grass & Forage 2022 21

WHY USE HERBAL LEYS? • Improves soil structure and fertility • Provides resilience in dry periods • Nitrogen fixation from legume species – so requires little fertiliser • Extends the grazing season • Improved content of vital minerals supporting better liveweight gains • Sainfoin, Chicory and Birdsfoot Trefoil are considered to have anthelmintic properties, reducing the need for wormers HERB OVERSEEDING SUITABLE SOILS AND PH Most herb and legume species can be sown on sand, loam or clay soils above pH6. However sainfoin and lucerne should only be sown on free draining soils with a pH of 6.2 and above. Red clover, Birdsfoot Trefoil and Alsike clover can establish on heavier soils with a lower pH. SOWING RATE These small seeded mixtures can be sown from 0.5-1kg per acre. WHEN TO SOW Sow when soils are warm, mid April to May and August to September, avoid sowing during peak grass growth in June as seedlings maybe smothered out. HOW TO SOW The sward must be as low in height as possible through either cutting or grazing, it should then be harrowed to create space for the new seedlings and remove dead material from the base of the sward. The seed can be broadcast and harrowed or shallow drilled (no deeper than 10mm) and well rolled. MANAGEMENT Stock can resume grazing the area after sowing, but must be removed 4-5 days after sowing, before new seeds germinate, a 5-6 week interval should then be left to allow the new seeds to establish, before a light, brief graze. 24 Carr’s Billington Grass & Forage 2022

Highly productive, low input crops which should help to reduce bought-in feed extend grazing season, and provide excellent These crops are relatively cheap to grow, offer forage when sufficient grass may be unavailable and present an opportunity to break pest and weed cycles when grown between two crops of grass. Root seeds grow readily in old turf which often harbors pests and weeds detrimental to a new reseed. They are high in dry matter and can increase animal performance as well as generating better soil structure and providing a cheap source of feed. Its also possible to get 2 grazings out of Turnips, Rape/Kale Hybrid and Forage Rape. SUMMER GRAZING: Stubble Turnips, Grazing Turnips and Forage Rape will extend the grazing season. WINTER GRAZING: Kale, Swedes and Rape/Kale Hybrids. Brassicas (Kale, Stubble Turnips, Turnips, Rape/Kale Hybrids, Swedes) should only be grown once every 4 - 5 years (drier areas) or 7 - 8 years (wetter areas) to minimise disease risks. FEEDING Introduce stock slowly, allow 1–2 hours grazing and build up to full time access after 7–10 days feed with ad-lib straw, silage or hay to prevent acidosis or bloat. Graze in long narrow strips to ensure all animals can graze at the same time and to minimise wastage. Provide minerals or bolus stock, please speak to your vet for advice. Feed swedes to cattle with mature teeth, they are not suitable for broken mouthed sheep. Ewes in late pregnancy on root crops will need additional protein. Always ensure fresh water is available at all times. 28 Carr’s Billington Grass & Forage 2022

STUBBLE TURNIPS 5kg or 25kg packs BRASSICA High protein, good summer buffer feed for dairy cows, good winter feed for sheep or cattle. Palatable and easy to digest helping to reduce winter feed costs. Sow: April-May, July-Aug Drill: 2kg/acre Broadcast :3kg/acre STAGGERED SOWING When planting a large acreage, it is advisable to stagger sowing dates. Or plant two-thirds of the crop area in an early maturing variety and one-third with a late maturing variety, at the same time (not together). FEEDING Both cattle and sheep should have access to run-back on grass. It is also advis- able to have hay/straw or silage on offer during each grazing, particularly in the case of dairy cows. Allow stock about three weeks to become fully adjusted to grazing and supply adequate mineral supplements. SAMSON - Purple tank Large, tankard shaped root, very palatable to both sheep and cattle. High leaf to bulb ratio resulting in high levels of protein. Full leaved tetraploid bulbing with very good early vigour and good disease resistance. Spring sown at 3kg/acre (7.5kg/ha) for high leaf percentage Autumn sown at 2kg/acre (5kg/ha) for larger bulb percentage. FODDER BEET 50,000 seeds/pack FORAGE CROPS Fodder Beet is similar to sugar beet, a highly palatable, highly digestible feed and an excellent source of sugar energy. Sow: Late March- April Drill: 50,000/acre Produces high-quality, substantial yields and is an excellent supplement to grass silage. The roots are very palatable to stock and offer superb feed quality. Specialist harvesting equipment is required to lift the roots and storage is needed unless they are strip grazed in situ. Medium dry matter varieties tend to have a higher percentage of root above ground and can be lifted with a top lifter with a relatively low dirt tare. These can be fed whole to stock. High dry matter varieties are more winter hardy and can be harvested later. They tend to sit further in the ground and require a sugar beet harvester to lift them. Due to the higher dirt tare and hardness of the root, these varieties may need to be chopped and washed before feeding. After wilting, the tops may be fed to stock and can contribute a further yield of 3-4 tonnes of protein-rich dry matter/ hectare. WHY RESEED? In comparison to an older ley, reseeding can boost production by over £3000/ha (£1200/acre) over 5 years with well managed grazed reseeds producing 10t/ha DM. Grazed grass is the cheapest feed available on most British farms, reducing the cost of bought in feed. Improved grassland in most of the UK is capable of growing over 12t DM/ha, but the current average is around 7t DM/ha (AHDB). By relying on old varieties and old pastures, farms are missing out on millions of pounds invested in breeding technology, to produce top performing varieties resulting in better profitability. Example: The varieties in MegaChoice have been significantly improved over a period of 10 years, from a potential yield of 12.97t DM/ha to 14t DM/ha, thats an increase of 7%! BENEFITS OF RESEEDING Investing in grass is investing in your whole livestock enterprise. Reseeding gives the following benefits: • Opportunity to address soil nutrient deficiencies and improve soil structure • Faster grass regrowth with more grass available in the shoulders of the season • 25% more responsive to nitrogen than permanent pasture • Opportunity to introduce clover and address weed problems • Increased crop yields and improve forage quality • Higher yields supporting higher stocking rate • Earlier turnout saving on concentrates • Better nutrient efficiency, All leading to: • Healthier soils and more efficient systems • Improved livestock intakes and feed conversion meaning more meat and milk • Overall enterprise efficiency with controlled costs and optimal output resulting in increased profitability from grassland and forage. 42 Carr’s Billington Grass & Forage 2022
OVERSEEDING GUIDE Overseeding is an effective solution to improve old pasture by increasing yield and quality. 1 SOIL TEST at least 6 months before. Check pH is 6-6.2 and P and K indices are 2- or above. 2 CHECK COMPACTION using a spade chop a square in the grass about 30cm deep. On one side of the square put the spade in and prise out the full sod. If the grass roots aren’t penetrating down further than 10cm then you’ve got compaction. Another sign is if the soil is bone dry 7-15cm down. Address this if compaction is over 10cm on clay soil, sward lift or mole plough. On lighter land just sward lift. 3 WEED GRASSES If they make up more than 30% of the sward, harrow hard to remove them. With a sward of more than 70% weed grasses the best option is to reseed the sward. 4 CONTROL PERENNIAL WEEDS before seeding with a selective herbicide. TIGHT GRAZE with sheep or cut. Afterwards scarify using a spring tine 5 harrow to open the sward up. This removes dead thatch and shallow rooted weed grasses. Ensure the tines work the top 1cm tp create a tilth. Do not spread slurry or fertilise before overseeding. 6 ROLL the sward to ensure good seed/soil contact to conserve moisture. Good seed bed consolidation not only helps germination, this will reduce the movement of leatherjackets within the soil. 7 CONTROL WEEDS after 4-6 weeks of sowing. GRAZE LIGHTLY when the seedlings are 10cm high and continue at 8 frequent intervals until the plants are well established. GRASS SEED MEGA RESTORE & BARMIX RENEW Specially formulated for overseeding, establishes very YOUR GRASS, OUR BUSINESS Developed in partnership with quickly to outcompete weed grasses. SOIL MANAGEMENT Soil condition affects the yield and quality of grass and forage crops, directly influencing livestock performance and enterprise profitability. SOIL SAMPLING around 25% of the farm annually will produce a more efficient nutrient management plan contributing to overall efficiency. It identifies the soil acidity and any shortfalls and surpluses in key nutrients, which when corrected can improve grassland performance contributing to overall profitability. Soil pH is vital, failure to correct soil acidity can cause a substantial yield loss and a decline in soil quality and health. • Target pH for grass is at least 6, and ideally 6.2 for grass and clover. • pH 6 is ten times more acidic than pH 7, pH 5 is one hundred times more acidic than pH 7 and so on. • Optimal pH promotes the best and most balanced biological activity in the soil (earthworms, bacteria and fungi) as well as nutrient utilisation. • A neutral pH is essential for optimal nitrogen fixation by legumes. Phosphate Aid in root development, rapid establishment of new (P) seedlings Potassium Transport nutrients around the plant, ensures efficient (K) uptake of nitrogen and protein production Supports nitrogen in protein production, Sulphur (S) improving the quality of grazing and silage • Aim to maintain soil P and K levels at Index 2. • Failure to maintain these levels of P & K and account for crop offtake can reduce yields by 10%. • 1 tonne of grass dry matter removes over 7kg P and over 27kg K. • Adequate levels of S improve the nutrient balance and increase efficiency of nutrient uptake by the grass. • Applying S-containing fertilisers in a grazing regime can increase grass crude protein (CP) content by 4%. Refer to your FACTS trained Carr’s Billington representative to help you make a nutrient management plan. 44 Carr’s Billington Grass & Forage 2022
