GORDIAN KNOT 2020 N AT O R A P I D D E P L O YA B L E C O R P S G R E E C E General Exercise GORDIAN KNOT 2020 (GOKT20) is a national, one-level tactical (land domain) Command Post eXercise (CPX); used as a venue for the evaluation of NRDC- GR in planning and conducting an Article 5 Major Joint Operation (MJO+) against a peer state adversary, contesting NATO in all-domains, using the OCCASUS-N setting. Exercise runs at the highest Tactical level, with NRDC-GR as Multi-Corps Land Component (MC LCC) HQ. The exercise is executed within existing NATO and National Communications and Information Systems (CIS) infrastructure (static and deployed). GOKT20 exercise, is directly linked with exercise LOYAL LEDA 2020 (LOLE20), in terms of scenario and operational products, as part of the overall NRDC-GR preparation on the forthcoming stand by period as MC LCC, on January 1st 2021. Aim (1) Train, experiment and evaluate internally NRDC-GR as a MC LCC HQ in planning and conducting Collective Defence Operations at MJO+ scale. (2) Enhance NRDC-GR competency in focus areas, namely C2, Land Manoeuvre and Fires, Battlespace Management and Logistics, and other selected training areas/ objectives in disciplines selected by the OSE in coordination with the OCE. (3) Posture NRDC-GR for assuming the role of MC LCC HQ in exercise STEADFAST LEDA 2021 (STLE21).

Additionally it reflects our contributing Nations’ dedication to the Alliance and projects stability in the fragile balance of the Alliance’s borders, taking advantage of NRDC-GR HQ strategic location in the South-Eastern edge of Europe. Moreover: (1) Demonstrated NRDC-GR significant progress in adapting to the emerging security threats in the physical, virtual and cognitive dimensions, in order to be capable to respond to future security challenges as part of the Alliance’s effort. (2) Assured NATO community and Partner Nations of NRDC-GR continuing ability to effectively contribute to the regional and wider South- Eastern NATO flank security and stability. (3) Reinforce the Hellenic commitment to the Alliance for collective defence and crisis response.

In accordance with the current rotation, the HQ will be in a stand-by period as Multi Corps Land Component Command (MC LCC) from January 1st 2021 up to December 31st 2023, capable to Command and Control up to five Warfighting Corps. Simultaneously, NRDC-GR is preparing for its possible roles as Joint Task Force HQ, Warfighting Corps and Land Component Command. MULTINATIONALITY (EXISTING – INCOMING) NRDC-GR is a multinational HQ in which multiple nations are working together, demonstrating the Alliance’s solidarity, contributing to credibility and legitimacy of our common mission. Multi-nationality offers opportunities for effective communication at all levels. Active and former members of NRDC-GR from participating Nations, and our young Interns are our best and most credible ambassadors.
N AT O R A P I D D E P L O YA B L E C O R P S G R E E C E COOPERATION WITH THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY NRDC-GR collaborates closely with Thessaloniki’s Academic Community, through a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Macedonia, a Memorandum of Cooperation with the International Hellenic University and agreements with other relevant entities. This cooperation facilitates mutual and beneficial synergies, by common study and internship programs, conferences, seminars, etc. NRDC-GR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM NRDC-GR is providing university students or recent graduates from NATO member nations the opportunity to intern. The NRDC-GR Internship Program (NIP) focuses on highly motivated young persons from a wide variety of disciplines, including political science, International relations, security studies, law, economics, journalism, etc. Our interns benefit from NIP by gaining understanding of a multinational military organization. ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE LOCAL SOCIETY The HQ is located in the center of Thessaloniki and the vicinity of the main market, the International Fair of Thessaloniki facilities and the Universities’ compounds. NRDC-GR personnel participates in numerous social events, while the close relationship that has been developed the last years within various domains of local community, creates a mutual extraordinary relationship with the local society.
N AT O R A P I D D E P L O YA B L E C O R P S G R E E C E COOPERATION WITH INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS Solution to current or future crisis requires a comprehensive approach between military and non-military actors. To that aim, NRDC-GR endeavors Civil-Military Interaction (CMI), through permanent cooperation with most relevant civil organizations, as UNOCHA, UNHCR, ICRC, IOM, OSCE, Blue Shield and many others, facilitating common understanding, training and education.
