NEWS Work begins to demolish Oxted’s gasholder A small crowd, including local children with purple RegenOxted flags, gathered at 8am on a cold Sunday in February to witness a 60 tonne mobile crane being driven down Oxted’s high street to the gasholder site. The Deli opened its doors to support the event with free teas and coffees provided by St William Homes LLP, owners of the gasholder site. The crane is being used to dismantle the gasholder. It holds a basket from which two workmen are cutting the gasholder into pieces, which are then dropped inside. Most of the materials will be recycled. Martin Lloyd was among the crowd who came along to cheer the crane’s arrival. Having lived in the area for over 30 years he said all the residents are looking forward to the gasholder coming down. Rosie Scott-Taggart, another local resident can remember the gasholder going up. She said: “When it first went up it was painted blue to match the sky, but over the years it has rusted and become a real eyesore. We are happy it is coming down.” Demolition of the gasholder is due to be complete around May 2019. PLANNING Our Local Plan The role we will play in the delivery of the new Garden Community of 4,000 homes at South Godstone was considered by councillors at February’s Strategy & Resources Committee. This reflects our firm commitment to achieve the best outcomes for the district including 1,000 genuinely affordable homes and infrastructure gains such as road and rail improvements, new schools and healthcare facilities. Councillors agreed to engage specialist planning consultants, GVA, to look in more detail at the different approaches we could take. Demolition of the old building is now complete, and the foundations of the new building have started going in. The homes, which will be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, are expected to be ready by winter 2020 and will provide an opportunity for first time buyers to get onto the housing ladder. The redevelopment not only forms a key part of the regeneration of Caterham, but also means there will be 48 more affordable homes available for buyers from the local area. HOUSING New homes in the area Work has started to build new sheltered homes for older people at The Court in Warlingham which are expected to be finished in March 2020. An older block of flats is being demolished to make way for 19 new sheltered flats for older people which will be owned and managed by the Council. These purpose built flats will provide high quality accommodation to meet the needs of older residents in the district. Along with the flats, the new development will include an office, lift access to upper floors, a communal lounge, storage for mobility scooters, landscaping and parking. Meanwhile on Barnfield Way, Hurst Green, work has started on three one-bedroom bungalows which will be owned by the Council and available at an affordable rent. The bungalows have been specifically designed to encourage existing tenants to downsize from larger council owned homes, releasing much needed housing for families in the area. The new bungalows will be available in December 2019. Michael Watkins and James Harvey are part of the crew working on the demolition of The Court. Planning a garage conversion? A garage conversion will not only give you more space, it could add as much as 10% to the value of your home. It’s also a great way to use wasted space, as very few people use their garages for car storage. However, there are a few things to bear in mind before you start. In most cases you don’t need planning permission as a garage conversion is normally classed as ‘permitted development’ of your property. To be absolutely certain you should check with the Council first, especially if you live in a listed home, in a conservation area or you are planning structural changes. Take a look at the interactive house on the planning portal, visit https://interactive.planningportal.co.uk. In terms of building regulations, all garage conversions need building regulations approval before work starts. It’s simple to apply online on the Southern Building Control Partnership website, visit www.southernbcp.co.uk where you’ll also find advice, including a guide to extending your home and a video on garage conversion projects. The Southern Building Control Partnership is also happy to discuss a project long before it starts. E-mail theteam@southernbcp.co.uk, or call 0330 0249355 (calls charged at local rate). 10 | Tandridge Magazine Spring 2019

NEW BEGINNINGS On the job training Whether you’re a school leaver or looking to retrain or return to work, with an apprenticeship, you can earn a competitive salary while your training is paid for. You gain hands-on experience and learn skills employers want while working towards a recognised qualification to help shape your future career. We offer a range of opportunities to apprentices of all ages. Hannah joined us as a Customer Services Apprentice having left school at 17. She said: “My apprenticeship has seen my confidence grow - I have gained real, valuable experience which has helped towards achieving a good qualification.” “The role can be challenging at times and is hard work, but the team is supportive and I learn new things every day. It has also taught me to manage my money and become more independent.” Our apprenticeships at the Council take between one to six years to complete depending on the level of the qualification. Hannah said: “I’m thrilled, I’ve received my NVQ Level 2 qualification and with the Council’s support I’m going to work towards my NVQ Level 3 as a Customer Services Trainee.” Jackie King, the Council’s Lead HR Specialist, said: “Recruiting apprentices, like Hannah, has attracted enthusiastic, talented people from a wide range of backgrounds with fresh ideas who have become skilled and valued employees. We’ll soon be recruiting for apprentices to work in our Case Services team who will study towards a Level 3 qualification.” Our apprenticeships are advertised on www.gov.uk/apply- apprenticeship. All our vacancies including apprenticeships are published on the Council’s website and www.surreyjobs.info. Hannah is one of our apprentices. COMMUNITY AND EVENTS Colour Caterham this Easter To welcome the start of spring, Caterham Valley will once again be splashed in colour. This Easter from 3 April to 22 April, the town will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of handmade artwork created by the local community. The organisers, Caterham Valley for You, hope to attract many visitors to the town, to witness this colourful transformation while supporting local businesses. The festival follows the success of the Christmas Elves Takeover which brought hundreds of children into the town on the hunt for 20 handmade characters hidden in shops and business windows. The organisers of Colour Caterham, are calling on local groups and artists to ‘own’ a small area of the town, whether that is a set of railings or a lamppost and transform it with an abundance of colourful creations. Local groups wishing to take part in Colour Caterham should submit their ideas as soon as possible by visiting www.caterhamvalley.co.uk. If you are doing some shopping over the Easter school holidays, please pop along and see Caterham in full bloom.
