TRAVEL BOLDLY 2019/20 PASSPORT SERIES Welcome to the Center for the Art of Performance! This is your PASSPORT to a series of amazing performing arts events on the CAP UCLA 2019- 2020 season. As a PASSPORT member you can also participate in art-making activities, interact with artists and CAP UCLA staff, and connect with other students who are passionate about the arts. The following pages have brief descriptions about each show on the PASSPORT series. For info on how to use your PASSPORT, see the back inside cover—or go to cap.ucla.edu/passport.

ANCHOR DESTINATIONS | FALL ANCHOR DESTINATION #1 AIN GORDON 217 BOXES OF DR. HENRY ANONYMOUS FRI, OCT 11, 2019 @ 8 PM | FREUD PLAYHOUSE 217 Boxes… tells the story of the gay psychiatrist whose activism made a profound impact on LGBTQ civil rights. Disguised in a mask and using a voice modulator, Dr. John Fryer testified as Dr. Henry Anonymous on a “homosexuality panel” at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1972, which eventually resulted in the APA’s removing homosexuality as a mental disorder from its diagnostic manual.
ANCHOR DESTINATION #2 MICHAEL KEEGAN- DOLAN/TEAĊ DAMSA LOCH NA HEALA (SWAN LAKE) SAT, NOV 9, 2019 @ 8 PM | ROYCE HALL Loosely based on the original tale, Michael Keegan-Dolan creates a new adaptation of one of the most famous ballets in the world, Swan Lake. Incorporating dance, theater and live music by the Dublin band, Slow Moving Clouds, this version of Swan Lake is rooted in the Midlands of Ireland, where ancient mythology and the modern world collide.

Bill Morrison | Dawson City: Frozen Time Live! Composed by Alex Somers; Live music performed by Wild Up Fri, Dec 6, 2019 @ 8 PM | The Theatre at Ace Hotel Dawson City: Frozen Time is a true story of the discovery of over 500 silent film reels from the early 1900’s. Restored and enhanced film footage is combined with an original score by Alex Somers, performed live by L.A.’s own Wild Up.
ANCHOR DESTINATIONS | WINTER ANCHOR DESTINATION #3 GREGORY PORTER FRI, FEB 7, 2020 @ 8 PM | ROYCE HALL Known for his warm vocals, Gregory Porter rose to acclaim with his earthy, cross-pollinated brand of jazz, soul and gospel. A gifted singer of standards as well as more contemporary soul material, Porter has earned favorable comparisons to his idols Nat King Cole, Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. He announced his arrival by picking up a Grammy nomination for his 2010 debut, Water.
ANCHOR DESTINATION #4 OCTAVIA E. BUTLER’S PARABLE OF THE SOWER CREATED BY TOSHI REAGON AND BERNICE JOHNSON REAGON SAT, MAR 7, 2020 @ 8 PM | ROYCE HALL Based on the award-winning science fiction novels Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler, this multidisciplinary work features a powerhouse ensemble of over 20 singers, actors and musicians. Parable of the Sower harnesses over 200 years of Black music to give musical life to Butler’s genre bending novel, revealing deep insights into gender, race and the future of human civilization.

Pam Tanowitz/Brice Marden/Kaija Saariaho Four Quartets Sat, Feb 15, 2020 @ 8 PM | Royce Hall, UCLA Four Quartets, T. S. Eliot’s mysterious and beautiful poem is a meditation on time and timelessness. Three astonishing contemporary artists join forces in a ravishing union of dance, music, painting and poetry. Ladysmith Black Mambazo Thu, Feb 20, 2020 @ 8 PM | Royce Hall, UCLA South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world, Ladysmith Black Mambazo have uplifted the hearts of audiences world- wide with their astonishing vocal harmonies, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. Marlon James Thu, Feb 27, 2020 @ 8 PM | Royce Hall, UCLA Marlon James won the 2015 Man Booker Prize, making him the first Jamaican author to take home the prestigious literary award. His newest work, Black Leopard, Red Wolf, is a surreal fantasy epic that has been described by The New Yorker “as an African Game of Thrones.”
ANCHOR DESTINATIONS | SPRING ANCHOR DESTINATION #5 JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL THE ORIGIN OF LOVE TOUR SAT, APR 11, 2020 @ 8 PM | THE THEATRE AT ACE HOTEL John Cameron Mitchell, the double Tony Award-winning, Golden Globe-nominated co-creator of Hedwig & the Angry Inch, performs songs from his groundbreaking rock musical and regales his audience with stories from 20 years of Hedwig’s history.
ANCHOR DESTINATION #6 MARIKE SPLINT AMONG US—UCLA SAT, MAY 9, 5:30PM LOCATION TBD AMONG US UCLA is an audio-theater experience that navigates participants throughout the UCLA campus, exploring the relationship with the spaces we inhabit. Following instructions delivered via headphones, each audience member is the protagonist and UCLA is the stage. May 9 is a special, PASSPORT members-only private performance.
Seeds MK Guth Side Trip Destinations | Spring Pick any two from the list! Porte Parole, Seeds Fri, Apr 3, 2020 @ 8 PM | Freud Playhouse, UCLA Seeds is a true story revealing the legal battles between a Canadian farmer and Monsanto, exploring the truth be- hind genetically modified food and the biotech industry. MK Guth, Choreography for Reading Aloud Fri, May 1, 2020 @ 8 PM | Powell Library, UCLA Sited in UCLA’s historic Powell Library, sixty performers will read aloud from a diverse collection of authors. Audience members will enter the library’s sonic hive, wandering, listening to stories, and following their instincts.
CAP UCLA PASSPORT: HOW DOES IT WORK? • For $20.00, you will receive all six Anchor Destinations (two in Fall, Winter, and Spring) which will be loaded on your Bruin Card. Bring your BC with you to the theater on the night of the show. There will be a special PASSPORT Check-In Table. We will swipe your card and give you a ticket with your seat location. You will get a reminder email before each show asking you to RSVP. In order to claim your ticket you will need to RSVP by the deadline. PASSPORT Check-In opens an hour before each performance. If you lose or forget your actual PASSPORT, no worries—the tickets are on your Bruin Card. • You can choose 2 additional shows from the Side Trip List each quarter. When you RSVP, you will need to confirm your ticket(s) by paying $5. • Friends Fly Free! If you would like to bring a friend with you, RSVP for you and a guest. The limit on Friends Fly Free tickets is one per show, but the regular UCLA Student Ticket price is only $15. If you purchase a Side Trip show for $5, your friend comes for free: that’s two tix for $2.50! • Join us before each Anchor destination to meet fellow travelers and learn about the artists. On special occasions, there will be bonus activities: art-making, talks, free food—watch your email for updates. Purchase your PASSPORT at cap.ucla.edu/passport and click on the purchase link.
