About Mitacs Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 20 years. Working with 70 universities, 6,000 companies, and both federal and provincial governments, we build partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada. Mitacs was founded in 1999 as a Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence, dedicated to supporting applied and industrial research in mathematical sciences and associated disciplines. In 2003, we launched a research internship program designed to increase deployment of highly educated graduates into the private sector. Open to all disciplines since 2007, Mitacs has expanded in response to industrial and university needs, including programs in R&D management, professional skills development, and international research training. Mitacs is committed to its core vision of supporting research-based innovation and continues to work closely with its partners in industry, academia, and government. From aerospace systems to childhood literacy rates, Mitacs-funded research helps to strengthen connections, improve economic performance, and create jobs. Over the past 20 years, we have supported more than 20,000 research projects, trained more than 33,000 student and postdoc career-skills participants, and supported more than 3,600 international research collaborations. Mitacs has 25 offices across Canada, a robust leadership team, and a coast-to-coast business development team dedicated to building and supporting new partnerships. www.mitacs.ca 5
Mitacs in the news Mitacs thanks the Government of Canada for the April 2021 budget announcement of $708 million in funding over five years to create 85,000 innovation internships. This announcement will give Canada’s young innovators more opportunities to succeed while supporting businesses of all sizes across the country by providing them with the talent they need to get ahead in the competitive global marketplace. As Canada emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, our innovation ecosystem will play a critical role in our national economic recovery and future prosperity. By ramping up collaborative innovation and bringing together highly educated students and postdoctoral researchers with industry, we play to our strengths as a country. Increased internship opportunities will help grow our economy and fill critical gaps by providing companies with the talent they need and ensuring our highly trained expertise is deployed across all sectors of the economy. Mitacs also welcomes the announced funding strategies for the quantum computing, biomanufacturing, artificial intelligence, clean technology, and genomics sectors which are critical areas of focus in developing Canada’s innovation ecosystem. We look forward to supporting these strategies however we can. As the connector between our present situation and our future success, Mitacs looks forward to continuing its partnership with the Government of Canada in the post-COVID-19 economic recovery. John Hepburn, CEO and Scientific Director of Mitacs, April 19, 2021: “In a year unlike any other, Mitacs was proud to partner with the federal government to generate opportunities for students to drive innovation and economic development. Today’s significant announcement will allow us to continue to do that important work by giving young innovators even more opportunities to succeed while supporting businesses by providing them with the skilled talent they rely on. Thank you to the federal government for your confidence and support. We are ready to answer the call.” www.mitacs.ca 7

Mentor Role and Responsibilities Please see the 2021 Globalink Mentor Guidebook, FAQs, and a copy of this presentation on the Globalink Mentor Guide and Templates webpage – The role of a Globalink mentor is to provide social support for a group of interns and foster a sense of community. – Group sizes are dependent on the number of interns participating at each institution, they however average around 10 interns per mentor. – Globalink mentors help interns become familiar with their Canadian institution, check-in at least once every two weeks, and organize and run virtual social events and activities. – Mentors should expect to work around 1-2hrs/week. More work is required at the beginning when the interns start; less work is required throughout the summer as the interns become more comfortable with their internship. www.mitacs.ca 16

Social Events Organize two social events for all assigned interns – Two events minimum – Proposal must be submitted to Mitacs for approval at least two weeks before event – Is one GRI starting later in the summer? Reporting Payroll – Mentors report hours each week by Monday at 5:00pm PT – Mentors are paid every two weeks (please see payment schedule) Report – Final report/survey ❑ Due end of summer, deadline will be emailed to you ❑ More details will be provided later Ending work: – After your final intern has completed their internship and you have submitted your final report/survey, your work is now over. You can stop submitting working hours and Mitacs will detect that your employment is complete. – You do not need to notify Mitacs when your work is complete www.mitacs.ca 23
Best Practices Keep things straight-forward and positive! Listen to the needs of your interns; be flexible and change plans as needed Have fun! www.mitacs.ca 24
Next Steps Next steps – Globalink team will email you intern names and contact information towards the end of next week – Prepare welcome package, send to globalinkhire@mitacs.ca for approval, email to interns once approved. ❑ Create and submit this as soon as possible, even if your GRI arrive later in the summer ❑ Submit this to Mitacs at least one week (ideally two) before you plan to share with interns, so we have a chance to review and provide feedback + approval. – We recommend you contact your interns as early as possible to establish contact ❑ Mitacs does not provide intern start date change notifications to mentors, please ask your assigned interns to inform you + helpdesk@mitacs.ca of any start/end date changes www.mitacs.ca 25
