Dear Girl Scout Family,
Cookies, Camporee, Gold Award and more
Happy New Years! We are keeping our promise, providing girls
with amazing opportunities, all in a girl-led space. We could not
do it without our dedicated volunteers and parents. Thank you
for opening doors to a lifetime of leadership for Girl Scouts.
We are excited to host a Camporee: A Great Girl Gathering,
at Camp Aquasco May 15-17. Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and
Ambassadors will enjoy high adventure camp activities while
bonding over Girl Scout traditions like singing songs over a
campfire. For other camp activities, keep a look out for our
summer camp brochure arriving in your mailbox, just in time to
register for summer camp.
Gold Award Girl Scouts continue to impress. These are the “Girls the World Needs”. Three local universities,
Marymount University, Sweet Briar College and Hollins University have joined Trinity Washington University
by offering scholarships for girls who have earned this distinction. Check our website for more Girl Scout
scholarship information and continue to motivate your Girl Scouts to go for the Gold Award. It’s worth it!
It's Cookie Time! For the first time in nine years, the price of Girl Scout Cookies is increasing. Specialty brands,
S’mores and Toffee Tastics will cost $6.00, while the core varieties are $5.00 a box. We strive to provide the
best experiences for our girls and a price increase will help us achieve that goal. When customers buy
Girl Scout Cookies they are getting more than a delicious cookie, they are also supporting the good work of
Girl Scouts. Speaking of delicious cookies, a new cookie flavor is joining the line-up—Lemon Ups. Now that
should sweeten the Cookie Program this year!
The Insider magazine features many program opportunities just for Girl Scouts. Big things are happening in
the world of Girl Scouting, and through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls are discovering, connecting
and taking action to make the world a better place.

Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital Patch Programs
Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital offers several unique patch programs for our girls. The programs cover a wide range of topics and
patches can be earned as an individual or as a troop. Download our latest programs from our Kits and Patches page on our

Women’s Suffrage Centennial
Girl Scouts of all levels are eligible to complete the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Patch Program. As Girl Scouts
earn the patch, they explore the rich history of the women’s movement by visiting multiple places throughout our
Council. Activities range from attending a museum exhibit and watching a documentary to creating a skit about
something they learned and acting it out for their Troop.
Patches available now through December 31, 2020
Election Connection
Girl Scouts of all levels are eligible to complete the Election Connection Patch Program. As Girl Scouts earn
the patch, they will learn how to be an informed voter and how you can take part in encouraging voters today.
Activities range from learning about political parties and election language to creating your own campaign poster.
Patches available January 2020 through February 2021
Endangered Species
Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors, are eligible to complete the Endangered Species Patch Program. As Teen
Girl Scouts earn the patch, they will explore the importance of the Endangered Species Act and learn about local,
regional, and global species that need our help and how policy aids in protecting our environment. Environmental
stewardship has been a key part of the Girl Scout experience for over a century. Start making a difference and get
started with this patch program.

Did you know that the Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital is the largest council in the country?
Our new Local Programming initiative is just getting started--it’s designed to bring events to a wider range of geographical
areas within the Council. Keep an eye on the Local Programs tab on www.gscnc.org/councilactivities.
If you’re interested in collaborating on bringing events to your Association or Service Unit, contact pdorfman@gscnc.org.
Congressional Aide Interested in the legislative process? Gain first-hand experience as a
Congressional Aide during summer 2020. This is an exclusive opportunity
available to Girl Scouts in grades 11 and 12 in our Council. The program places
girls in congressional offices, either on Capitol Hill or in a local district office,
for a 40-hour, one week intensive session to learn about our nation’s political
process and see how advocacy works at the federal government level.
If you are interested in this unique experience on Capitol Hill, complete your
Congressional Aide application online by Monday, March 2, 2020. Girls must
participate in a mandatory orientation. Congressional Aide 2020 will run
mid-June to mid-August.

Be the Change: A World Thinking Day Event
Save the Date!! February 22, 2020
On February 22 of each year, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from 150 countries celebrate
World Thinking Day by doing activities around a shared theme. This year’s theme
is “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” Join us at Trinity Washington University as we
explore these topics through the lens of African Americans. This event is open to
friends and family of registered Girl Scouts. Registration is required. Visit the
Council Activities page to register: www.gscnc.org/councilactivities.
Program Grants and Loans
Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital believes that every Girl Scout should be given the opportunity to take part
in her Troop’s activities, regardless of her financial situation. All Girl Scouts and registered adults who
are in need of financial support to participate in Girl Scout programs are eligible to apply for assistance.
Completed applications are reviewed on a monthly basis. Please make sure to review Volunteer
Essentials before submitting an application.
Applications are available online and must be submitted 6-8 weeks prior to payment due dates. This
includes time for Council staff to follow up if clarification is needed, to review the application, and the
turnaround time for funds to be processed and issued if an application is approved. Program grant
applications can be found at gscnc.org/forms by searching “program grant application.”

Council Events and Programs
Girl Scouts Gather at the National Air & Space Museum
Mark your calendar – Girl Scout Day with the National Air & Space Museum will be held Saturday, March 14, 2020
at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. This is a
family and friends event celebrating Women’s History Month,
so parents, siblings, and future Girl Scouts are encouraged
to attend. Take the controls of a flight simulator, go inside
an inflatable planetarium, see the Space Shuttle Discovery,
experiment with the forces of gravity, and speak with female
scientists and engineers all on the same day. Presenters
from the museum, Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, US
Fish and Wildlife Service and many more make this a unique
opportunity for Girl Scouts of all ages activities may meet some
of the requirements of the new space science badges! All Girl
Scouts who register by Wednesday, February 19 will receive a
free patch at the Girl Scout table on the day of the event.

Girl Scout Day at Hillwood Estate, Museum, & Gardens
When: Saturday, March 21, 2020
Celebrate spring with a fun-filled, festive day at Hillwood!
Girls will earn badges while they explore enchanting gardens,
discover glittering treasures in the mansion, and enjoy a
variety of hands-on activities. Play lawn games such as
badminton, hula hoop, and jump rope, try costumes from a
collection of hero's capes and royal crowns, and create works
of art including self-portraits and fancy placemats inspired by
Hillwood's art collection. Admission is $11 per person.

Explore the Past!
Did you know that Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital has two Archives & History Program Centers where
girls can explore the rich history of Girl Scouting in our region?
Girl Scouts of all ages can register to learn about our Council’s history through hands-on activities
and by exploring our extensive collection that represents who we are and where we came from.
See vintage uniforms, view some of our oldest badges and handbooks and try your hand at various
early Girl Scout skills. All Girl Scouts will receive a patch for attending the program. Programs are
offered monthly at the Council’s history centers in Frederick, MD and Winchester, VA.

If you find yourself wondering where to earn the Jeweler Badge or want to know where to take your teen troop whitewater
rafting, be sure to keep up with Troop Edition. Troop Edition is a weekly e-newsletter containing upcoming Council and
Program Partner activities for troops and individuals. You’ll also find details on upcoming Girl Scout days and volunteer
opportunities. Troop Edition is posted each Thursday to our website, and troop leaders and service unit managers receive

Program Kits
Did you know that Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital offers materials that can be borrowed to support your Girl Scout
experience?
Program Kits are fun, age-appropriate resources and are available for varied subjects such as STEM, Journeys, the
environment, teamwork, and healthy living. Leaders can use them during troop meetings and as stations at larger events
such as encampments. Each kit is designed to serve a troop of 10-16 girls but can be modified to accommodate larger
groups.
New and Updated!
Introducing our newest kit, Car Care! The activities in this kit will help girls earn the Senior Car Care badge. However, this
kit is extremely beneficial for all teen Girl Scouts who travel and spend time in cars. Learn how to be a safe driver and a
considerate and helpful passenger.
Planning a large event? Reach for the stars using the Council’s new inflatable planetarium. The kit comes with a projector
and basic information about constellations, and can be a great complement to the Space Science badges.
Note: due to the logistics of the planetarium, there are specific event eligibility requirements and a rental fee.
Check out our updated Leave No Trace kits. Leave No Trace™ is a national outdoor skills and ethics education program.
This kit contains a variety of activities that will prepare your girls to maintain the integrity and character of the outdoors
for all living things. Many of the activities in this kit can be paired with the requirements for the Environmental Stewardship
badges for each girl level.

March 15, 2020 at 5:00 pm is the deadline to submit Gold Award final reports and Silver Trefoil
reports. Girls who meet the deadline will be:
• Invited to the In Your Honor ceremony on May 9, 2020
• Recognized in the 2020 Award Yearbook
This deadline also applies to Silver Award final reports in order for girls to be recognized in the
2020 Award Yearbook. President’s Award and Gold Award Scholarship applications are also due on March 15, 2020.

A key benefit of being a Girl Scout is having access to our beautiful camps. In a girl led, girl-friendly environment, girls
challenge themselves and take healthy risks, surrounded by supportive friends and camp staff. When girls spend
quality time outdoors and increase their exposure to nature, they thrive physically, emotionally and intellectually. And
that’s great news—because when Girl Scouts get outside:
•They discover that they can better solve problems and overcome challenges.
•They develop leadership skills, build social bonds, and are happier overall.
•They become team players and care more about protecting our environment.
Girl Scouts believes in getting girls outdoors. Our summer camps allow girls to unplug from their smartphones,
laptops, TVs, and tablets, and get outside to enjoy nature. Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital has both Sleep-away Camp and
Volunteer-led Day and Evening Camp Programs for girls to enjoy. Learn more at www.gscnc.org/camp.
Sleep Away Camp-Registration opens January 14, 15, and 16
Four camps host Sleep-Away Camp programs, Camp Coles Trip, Camp May Flather, Camp Potomac Woods, and Camp
Winona. Girls can choose from a two night overnight, one week, or two week program, to best match their comfort
level. Programs vary from STEM, Art, Horseback Riding, Rock Climbing, Windsurfing, and more! Staff design programs to
meet girls where they are, help them develop new skills, and challenge themselves, all while having the best summer
ever. Sleep-Away Camp is for girls ages 5-17.
Volunteer-Led Day & Evening Camps-Registration opens February 12
Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital has 21 Summer Day and Evening Camps in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Every camp
is unique with its own theme and activities. All of our day and evening camps are 100% volunteer-run! Volunteer roles
at day and evening camp include unit counselors who lead a group of girls through the week, program volunteers who
teach activities, part-time volunteers, and more. If you volunteer at camp, you will help girls explore the world around
them, challenge themselves, and build self-esteem, all while having a blast at camp. Get connected with camps near
