FAO-EBRD study on GI economic impacts Centre d’Investissement /Division de la Nutrition et des Systèmes Alimentaires
Main economic impacts - 1 • Robust impact of GIs on final products prices - from 20 to 50% increase • In most cases, with some variations depending on the type of market • Better income redistribution to primary producers: • For 3 cases: Colombian coffee (+25% in the price paid to producers before and after PGI registration), Manchego and Tête de Moine cheese: better price for milk paid to farmers compared to substitute • Increase of production, especially in the long term after possible initial decrease • All cases except Darjeeling tea - E.g. Tête de Moine cheese +300% between 1986 and 2014; Kona coffee +250% increase between 1995 and 2015; Manchego cheese +83% between 2001 and 2013. Centre d’Investissement /Division de la Nutrition et des Systèmes Alimentaires
Main economic impacts - 2 • Market access enhanced, new markets or growing markets • In 5 cases: Darjeeling tea, Kona coffee, Manchego cheese, Taliouine Saffron, Tête de Moine cheese • More economic resilience, especially through diversification (in 6 cases) and decommoditization (decreasing dependency to global market price) (in 2 cases: Penja pepper, Kona coffee) • Positive externalities • Price increase also for substitute products (Futog cabbage, Vale dos Vinhedos, Penja pepper) Centre d’Investissement /Division de la Nutrition et des Systèmes Alimentaires
Key success factors • Specific quality and specifications, for differentiation and adding value, importance of the innovations • Organized collective action: horizontal and vertical coordination – importance of trust and longer experience • Effective marketing strategy : branding , targeting, accessing new markets • Sound legal and institutional system Centre d’Investissement /Division de la Nutrition et des Systèmes Alimentaires
