3 Standard category GENERAL LIGHTING What is general lighting and why do we need it? This being the most basic type of lighting in our spaces, it is also the most popular and widely used. Often, it is designed with the intent of creating sufficiently high ambient lighting, good enough to carry out tasks requiring high illumination levels – to create the substitute of natural lighting within an enclosed indoor space. The key of good general lighting is to provide a sufficiently high lighting level suitable for most tasks, with a luminaire arrangement that blends in well with modern architectural ceiling systems. Until recently, this was largely provided by fluorescent lamp systems, which are now replaced with LED solutions. 6 7 Standard category APPLICATION IDEA 1st method of using general lighting – as a replacement to T5/T8 lamps for task lighting A pure replacement of previous generation T5/T8 lamps by much more efficient and long lasting LED lamps forms the foundation of general lighting. Key features that mimic the photometric and optical characteristics of fluorescent lamps are minimizing direct glare and maintaining a very wide distribution. Shallow depths of installation make less ceiling conflicts with HVAC systems and more pleasing profiles create a modern aesthetic. Continuous edge to edge runs are also possible. 8 9 Standard category APPLICATION IDEA 2nd method of using general lighting – complementing ceiling design and modern aesthetic In this lighting method, general lighting is of two types – continuous row of light from the ceiling profile and an end to end (custom length) light solution. Both are hugely complementing the architectural design intent, and self-sufficient to illuminate the space without any additional lighting.
