Estate News CHRISTMAS MARKET AT FOURWAYS GARDENS ESTATE Our ever popular annual Christmas Market was a great success this year. Many stall holders had to rush home to collect more stock as halfway through the market they were sold out. O ur market is scheduled for the second Saturday in November annually, to allow residents to stock up on Christmas Gifts, Teachers’ Gifts and that special clothing item that is not available in retail shops. Thanks to our amazing residents for supporting this day so well! Over the years, word has spread about the wonderful Fourways Gardens Community and their support of the small business owners at our Markets. That is also the reason that the market is fully booked way in advance by great small businesses who offer products of high quality. We were incredibly lucky with the weather as rain was forecast for the afternoon. It however stayed clear into the evening which allowed our residents to shop until the last minute. Some of the ladies asked for the ‘mommy-specific’ stalls to please return before the holidays started as shopping with husbands and children around was just not as successful as anticipated! As always, we listened and arranged for many of the clothing, jewellery and lady- specific stalls to be back at Fourways Gardens Estate on Wednesday, 4 December, in the Hall from 6pm to 9pm. We hope all who supported the day are enjoying their beautiful purchases and we will definitely invite The Little Field Mouse Market back next year! Fourways Gardens • 10 • December 2019

Johan Barnard of NEWTOWN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS. Here is a precis of what we learnt. Automated Irrigation requires little management and maintenance, is ideal for large sites with multiple zones, less water is used and wasted, and it can run when no one is there. It is more expensive when computerised. Some electrical work is required and strict maintenance is required as well as audits to ensure there are no leaks or clogging in the system. DIFFERENT METHODS OF IRRIGATION There are many types of irrigation. Drip irrigation is used in agriculture, Impact also for agriculture, as well as Gear Drives involving a sophisticated system with rotating heads which are very good for large areas. Over the past week, I’ve been cruising around in the updated XC90 and it got me thinking as to why we don’t see more of these Swedish SUVs roaming the streets of Fourways. The tagline here is the starting price at just shy over the R1-million mark. Sure, it sounds like a lot, but the sheer amount of standard kit easily justifies it compared to its rivals. If you use it and love it, share it with others. If you don’t use it, then give it to someone who can benefit from it instead. I thought it would be appropriate to include in the December issue as it is often the time for reflecting and planning. On that note, reflecting and planning should be an ongoing process and not be limited to one time in the year, so whether you decide to use this now, later or every month, that is really up to you. HOW IT WORKS The 8 Elements for Purposeful Drive are described below. Consider each one and rate your current position in relation to where you want to be. A score of 0 would indicate you have not started or perhaps neglected an element. A score of 10 would indicate that you have achieved all your goals in that area so far. 1. Spiritual This is not related to religion but rather questions how much joy you have in your life. For some, that means spending time in nature, being artistic or reading a book. For others, it could be the time in prayer and meditation or taking a yoga class. This is something you do to feed your soul. 2. Intellectual When the mind stops learning and problem-solving, it is at risk of premature ageing and mental atrophy. However, too much intellectual stimulation can be exhausting and draining and may take away from other areas of life. It is up to you to Fourways Gardens • 26 • December 2019

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR PARENTS DEAL WITH THE FEARS OF AGING? As your parents grow older, it’s likely that they will find themselves facing one or more of the four common fears associated with aging: vulnerability to crime and violence; outliving retirement funds; loss of dignity; and isolation and loneliness. At Evergreen Lifestyle, we’ve made it our business to address all four directly through our Partnership for Life promise which delivers physical security, financial peace of mind, continuous care and sense of community. Here’s how. Fear #1 Vulnerability to crime and violence Physical security is our number one priority and we’ve spent a lot of time ensuring that the security at our villages is world class. Each village has perimeter walls, electric fencing and CCTV cameras ensuring strict access control at all times, while state- of-the-art security control rooms are manned and monitored 24 hours a day. In addition, regular external safety and security audits are carried out by independent consultants to identify where and when upgrades and improvements are required. Fear #2 Outliving retirement funds Thanks to the Evergreen Life Right, your parents can accurately plan their financial future and ensure that their savings are able to support them throughout their retirement years. Our Life Right offers them a safe, secure home for the rest of their lives, flexible pricing options, reduced upfront costs – there’s no transfer duty, VAT or registration fee linked to a Life Right – and transparent monthly levies. What’s more, there are no special levies as Evergreen carries all the costs associated with the upkeep of the village and major capital expenditure. Finally, should your parents ever face a financial crisis at any point during their retirement, Evergreen is able to release a portion of their capital, in the event of a financial emergency, to help them fund levies and Care Centre costs.
