Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras’ mission is to inspire and cultivate personal excellence through music. After 75 years of music-making, CYSO continues to shape generations of young leaders and musicians. Students collaborate and create in a learning envi- ronment like no other, developing fundamental skills including leadership, self-confidence, teamwork, and resilience. We are committed to educating, encourag- ing, and empowering each young musician so that they may pursue personal excellence both on and off stage. CYSO works with young musicians ages 6-18 in on-site and school-based ensembles, and offers community programming reaching audiences of all ages from across the Chicago region. Our ensembles include symphony orchestras, string orchestras, steelpan, jazz band, chamber music, and music composition. We invest in our community through CYSO@CPS school- based ensembles and free concerts that reach more than 10,000 young people annually. CYSO promotes and provides ensemble-focused programming because we believe in the power of community. A young musician’s time at CYSO is a path- way of opportunity and growth, but they do not walk it alone. By bringing together young people from across the region, CYSO students build bonds with those who come from different backgrounds and share a passion for music. Celebrat i n g 7 5 y e a r s CYSO was founded in 1946 by a group of high school musicians from across the Chicago region who came together at a sum- mer music camp. The new friends were so inspired by the unique camaraderie and mu- sical excellence they experienced that after returning home, they came together to cre- ate an ensemble of their own, then called the Youth Orchestra of Greater Chicago. The student-led organization quickly grew from those original founders into a 113-mem- ber orchestra made up of students from across the city and suburbs. The group gave their very first performance at Chicago’s re- nowned Orchestra Hall the very next year. announcing t h e cyso endowment During the 75-year history of CYSO, our programs have grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of our students and their communities. This year, a group of devoted CYSO supporters have come together to celebrate CYSO’s 75 years by helping bring to fruition a long-standing goal for CYSO—the creation of a CYSO Endowment. The goal of the CYSO Endowment is to raise $5 million over the next five years. This goal is ambitious but achievable. These funds will help ensure that future generations of CYSO musicians will always have the support and resources they need to grow to their fullest potential. s t e elpan funding Dr. Louanne Carabini a nnouncement and Shawn O'Leary are proud to support CYSO We are excited to announce that CYSO has received funding for the purchase of new instruments for our Steel Orchestras program. Steelpan offers a unique learning environment in which students are encouraged to learn and grow together through peer-to-peer learning. The program also helps level the playing field for students whose financial background makes private lessons and instrument own- ership difficult. Steelpan students experience instrumental music learning with a much lower barrier to entry, allowing them to quickly gain skills in a collaborative environment. When the new season begins in August, this generous gift will allow CYSO’s young musicians to not only play and practice during rehearsals, but also allow for our older instruments to be checked out for personal practice for the very first time. This will provide musicians with the opportunity to take the skills they learn during rehearsals and develop a deeper understanding of the instrument at home throughout the week. A special thank you to Jennifer Myerberg and the Alvin & Louise Myerberg Family Foundation for making this possible.
