Our History St Bede’s was founded in 1911. Its prime purpose was to provide Catholic leaders for the South Island. To achieve this, the intention was to provide a Boarding School to foster and grow Catholic leaders. The original school was situated at Ferry Road, however, it only catered for day pupils. It wasn’t until 1920 when the College moved to Papanui Road could a Boarding School be established and boarders enrolled. They predominantly came from all over the South Island and the roll quickly grew in the next decade. Other Catholic schools and Boarding schools were established in the South Island, which ultimately influenced the boarding roll at St Bede’s. Boarding numbers in the late 1960s and early 1970’s exceeded 250. The current capacity for the Boarding School is 142. Marist priests ran the Boarding school until the late 1990’s after which the leadership of the College and Boarding School was transitioned to lay staff. The Boarding School is a vibrant faith community with a College community and Mass on Sunday night which ‘Begins and ends the week’. St Bede’s College Boarding Handbook - 3

At dinner on a Thursday, our student leaders complete a random draw to recognise three students for their positive behaviour. Not only is this a celebration of positive behaviour and a commitment to our community values, but also a means of reinforcement. The weekly newsletter also celebrates those students demonstrating positive behaviour. Boarding Competencies Our ‘Boarding Competencies’ have been adapted from the Key Competencies of the NZ Curriculum. These are age appropriate and aspirational. Students are taught, work toward and reflect on these competencies in their Ako groups and with their Team Leader. These competencies are the foundation of the Boarding House and represent the core skills we believe all Bedean Boarders should aspire to. Progress against competencies is reported to parents each Friday through the onBoard Parent Portal. This is completed by the respective Team Leaders. The scale used for each star is outlined below.
