FOLL Visits New Neighborhoods in Lincoln Submitted by Kathy Snelson, FOLL Community Outreach Director Several new home developments in the Lincoln area now flourish with vibrant neighborhoods of new homeowners and families. What a great opportunity for FOLL to provide new community members with information about the Lincoln Public Library and its available resources. FOLL did exactly this! Pictured: FOLL Board Members Linda Derosier, Mary Nader and Jeri Ferris. Board members and member volunteers delivered 450 door knob bags throughout five new home developments. Each bag included FOLL and Library information, a FOLL bookmark highlighting Library 24/7 online resources, and certificates for Pictured: Cindy Pulliam, FOLL member and a free book and craft bags for all ages. Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month Take-Home Craft May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant, a fisherman named Nakanohama Manjiro, to the United States on May 7, 1843, and marks the transcontinental railroad’s completion on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. On your next library visit, pick up a Take-Home packet with instructions and materials for a paper lei. The lei custom was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers, who took an incredible journey from Tahiti, navigating by the stars in sailing canoes. With these early settlers, the lei tradition in Hawaii was born. Leis were constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts, feathers, and even bone and teeth of various animals. Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
Meet Karen Van Gundy Library Assistant Karen Van Gundy joined the staff of the Lincoln Public Library in April 2017. She is originally from San Jose, California and is the youngest of three sisters. As a youth, Karen was very active in sports playing softball, soccer, and field hockey. She attended the University of the Pacific in Stockton on a field hockey scholarship and graduated with a degree in education with a minor in English literature. Pictured: Karen (right) with her daughter, Harlie. After college, Karen went on to play golf and became a teaching pro at Granite Bay Golf Course. She left her golf career to raise her two children -- Harlie, who is a nurse in Reno, Nevada and Jakob who will be graduating this month with an engineering degree. Pictured: Karen (left) with her son, Jakob. Karen loves playing golf, weight lifting, biking, hiking, basically, anything outdoors. Of course, she also enjoys reading. She reads everything fiction with a few biographies added here and there. Karen shared that she has "always loved reading and libraries. When we moved to Lincoln, I volunteered here at the library while also working at the Roseville Public Library. Liked this library better, so I came to work here." Karen oversees the Zip Book program and is responsible for maintaining the library's collection of young adult fiction books, young adult graphic novels, children’s graphic novels, and large print books. Karen stated that the best thing about working at the library is "the people for sure. We have a great team that I consider family as well as amazing volunteers." She particularly enjoyed participating in clay day with other library staff where they made "that totally cool book clay thing." Karen also loves dressing up with her coworkers for all the different library events. Karen lives in Foresthill (near Auburn) with her wonderful husband, Jeff, and the family pet, Max. Since Max is a mix of Australian Shepherd and Border Collie, he can be quite exuberant. It's often a challenge to get his attention especially since he is also "hard of hearing." Thank you, Karen, for all you do for our library.
