Friday 2nd July 2021 NEWSLETTER 17 Dear Parents/Carers, It has been an extremely busy few weeks across both schools. The children have been completing some wonderful activities and we have been lucky to have some glorious sunshine to support our outdoor learning also. This week saw our children meet their new class teachers and other members of staff they will be working with from September. It was lovely to see so many happy, smiling faces as they met outside on our playgrounds. The lead up to the end of term will continue to be busy with further events taking place. Although we have needed to adapt some of these, it has been lovely to run some more of our ‘normal’ events that we all truly value. Have a lovely weekend Yours sincerely, Mr Rhodri Hopkins
Summer Reading Challenge 2021. Portishead library have invited everyone to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. They have asked all the children to pack their bags and head to Wilderville. It’s a pretty cool place, but there are lots of things that the Wild World Heroes can do to make their town even better for the people and animals that live there. Wild World Heroes will feature amazing books, awesome rewards, and plenty of ideas for taking care of our environment. To access this amazing free event, contact Portishead Library either in person or on-line. Year 2 Castles project: History and Design Technology The Year 2 children have enjoyed learning about castles in History and the purpose of the main castle features. They have also been developing their Design and Technology skills to make siege towers, which involved exploring wheels and axels to form the base. The children then built their castle using a variety of construction materials and developing their cutting and joining skills. They all did a super job!
Odd Dog Out artwork In 4W, we have been busy creating a display inspired by the storybook ‘Odd Dog Out’, written by Rob Biddulph. Our doggy drawings show that everybody is different in their own way. Therefore, 4W would like to remind everyone ‘to blaze a trail and be who you are’. Remember, we are all unique. Written by Albert, Olivia, Jack B and Indie 4F have discussed current environmental issues and in turn have reflected upon their own actions with the aim of making a difference. With Alice at the helm, they resolved to try to jointly achieve their green Blue Peter Badge. Each team member managed to achieve their goal and today as a result of the much- appreciated support of Mrs George uploading the information to achieve this outcome to the Blue Peter website each team member was duly rewarded by receiving their badge, certificate and letter. Below is a little insight into the shared class thoughts and learning experiences -the report was written by Alice G, Emily H, Amelia G, Emily R and Lucy H.
Year 4 Environmental Report- edited and written by Annabelle A 4F on behalf of Year 4. Year 4 enjoyed a virtual visit from Wessex Water-here is a report written by Archie W on behalf of year4-the underlying learning was think before you flush or pour down the drain! NetZero Competition 6B managed to get through the final of the Net Zero Competition – a great achievement, particularly as they were competing against primary and secondary schools from around the UK. Four members of the class (Dylan, Jo, Caity and Amber) explained their ideas and concepts about how to reduce our carbon footprint to a panel of 3 judges from leading businesses via Teams. It was a nerve-racking experience! Unfortunately, 6B didn’t win the competition but were shortlisted and received a ‘Highly Commended’. Well done to everyone involved.
YEAR SIX BUSINESS PROJECT Last week, the year sixes began a business project aiming to raise £200 for some end-of- term treats. Gregg Poulter, an experienced business man, visited our school and advised us on how to make our stalls successful. We spent our lessons creating advertisements and logos to entice customers to spend money at our stalls, also calculating the costs as we went. We had various ideas which all came to life on the big day: hand crafts, sweet treats, sporting games and so much more! Because of all our hard work, we managed to smash the target with the total of £530 and we now have the key to so many more opportunities! Finally, we owe a massive thanks to everybody who has helped us on our money making mission: teachers, parents and the Friends of High Down. We would like to credit and thank everyone, especially Miss Edwards for supplying us with crucial resources. Also needing recognition are Mrs Cowan and Gregg Poulter for being such lovely ‘dragons’. By Mia and Laura 6G Donations wanted! Over the last couple of months, Year 6 have been busy in the new nature area on the lower playground. We have planted: carrots, chard, lettuce and sunflowers which are already thriving. Many classes have been enjoying the area. To continue to develop this lovely space and also the environmental area near the Year 3/4 block, we really need your help. If you are able, please can you donate any plug flowers/ climbing plants/ shrubs/ plant trays/compost or compostable pots/watering cans? We would very much appreciate any donations. Thank you!
