Fairview’s Flyer We C.A.R.E. Cooperation Achievement Respect Enthusiasm FAIRVIEW ‘A fair view of all things’ 16th November, 2020 Dear Fairview community After a year that has seemed to crawl along, this term is going terribly fast. We are now into the last 5 weeks of the year. Over these next few weeks, we will finish swimming lessons and the Year 6s will go to transition and their final camp. We also have our awards and graduation assemblies and our volunteers morning tea. These are all the extra bits. We are also working hard on making sure we get through the year’s curriculum with your children, getting final reports sorted and planning for 2021. It’s a very busy end of the year. Planning for 2021 Thank you to the parents who have sent planning considerations for next year. We try our hardest to support all requests. I have an initial plan in place for 2021. If you are planning on not returning at the start of next year, could you please let me know as soon as possible. This is really important for our planning. If you are looking at leaving later in the year, that is not as critical. At this stage, some of our classes are very full, and we are also getting enquiries about new enrolments. I would prefer not to have to change the class structure at the start of next year. Thank you for your support. 2021 Contribution and Charges and Student Requirement Lists Our school board has reviewed the 2021 contributions and charges and student requirements lists. These will be sent out before the start of December. Once again, Reuben’s Newsagency has supported us in making a pre- order process available. You can also purchase the items elsewhere if you wish. At the end of the year, ask your children to check their trays and bags. Some items (the calculator, headphones and library bag) should be kept if they are still in good condition. You do not have to purchase new ones if the old ones are still ok. When you review the Contributions and Charges, you may note that our school voluntary contribution has increased from $40 to $50. This has been increased to cover the cost of the change in maths program. You will no longer need to purchase a maths book for your child to use. The $10 increase but removal of a $16 maths text means that, overall, school charges are reduced for 2021. Your contributions are important and go directly to supporting our students. Kindy Open Day Last Thursday, we had our Kindy open day. It was great to have the opportunity to meet 16 of our new (and returning) families. We had presentations from our local health services, the Child and Parenting Centre, the P&C and the school. It was a great display of the wrap around services that we have in our community to support the growth and education of our children in this community. Thank you to all those who were able to attend. It was a great example of the saying “it takes a village to raise a child”. I was blown away with the number of staff and students who got dressed up and the diversity of costumes. Many of you had gone to a lot of trouble. It is appreciated. We look for every opportunity to promote reading. I would like to especially thank Ms Monique for the outstanding job she did reading David Walliams’ book “Geronimo, the penguin who thought he could fly”. Thank you also to Mrs Whitney for organising the day and running the Scholastic Book Fair. A reminder to all of the kids who are participating in reading challenge—our next assembly is in Week 7, so students who get their reading challenge book in by this Friday will receive their next award at the next assembly. 2020 seems to be the year that keeps on giving! We have been reminded once again to be mindful that we are still under Phase 4 restrictions. We are planning how our end of year assemblies can follow these rules to support all of our safety. A critical part of this will be our ongoing following of good hygiene practices and physical distancing. As we get closer to the event, we will make sure you are all aware of the expectations. As always, if your child is unwell, please keep them home. Encourage your children to wash their hands regularly. We have hand sanitiser in every classroom and ongoing daily cleaning of high contact areas. Our management of COVID-19 is going to be an ongoing thing. We have seen how quickly circumstances can change. Andrew Whitney Principal
The Great Watermelon Experiment Room 10 were very excited to participate in the Australia wide, Great Watermelon Experiment as part of their learning in science. After some initial background research into melons and rubber, the children then had to predict how many rubber bands (extra large in size) it would take before the huge watermelon would implode. The nature of this ‘high risk’ experiment brought about considerable trepidation and excitement amongst the students (and teachers) . Dressed in PPE and observing from a safe distance away, the rubber bands were placed slowly and surely over the watermelon. The tension was amazing. As time ticked by and the minutes stretched into what seemed like an eternity, the children were buzzing. The first target of 100 rubber bands was passed...then 200...By this stage the students were beside themselves with anticipation, and Mrs Salmeri was feeling increasingly nervous. At this point, it was noted that the watermelon was beginning to leak.... The moment was near. Unfortunately, Mrs Salmeri made the ‘rookie error’ of removing her PPE/ hood to address the class and prepare the children and video recorders for the BIG moment. However, science doesn’t always go to plan… The class watched the watermelon implode in dramatic fashion while Mrs Salmeri was mid-sentence, and she had taken her eye off the task at hand . With a cracking explosion, their teacher and her trusty EA were sprayed with melon. The children were momentarily stunned before erupting into shrieks of laughter, and then they dived on any remaining remnants of watermelon like food-starved scavengers. Sadly, the moment was not caught on camera as the onlookers had all paused their filming at the vital second! Oh well, maybe next time…. Science can be so much fun!
