1 Francis Scott Key Post No. 11 Official Bulletin Vol. XXXIX No.2 AUGUST — 2021 Masks not required if you have been vaccinated COMMANDER’S ROLL CALL American Legion Post 11 celebrated 103 years of existence on July 19, 2021. On July 6, 2021, the newly elected leadership were sworn in for each organization – Legion, Auxiliary, SAL, and Riders. I look forward to working with Auxiliary President Debbie Cline, Detach- ment Commander Jeffrey Seiler and Riders Director Tim Smith to make this a great year. I am proud and humbled to serve as the 103rd Commander. Serving as Acting Commander since February was a challenge considering the pandemic and all the restrictions. Thank you all for support- ing the Post and my efforts to date. I will continue putting forward my best effort as Commander to make Post 11 a safe place to eat, drink and play. Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal. I have led be- fore and enjoy leading from the middle. I enjoy interacting with everyone. One Band, One Sound. If one note is off, the rhythm is off, and we want to keep the rhythm. We all must do our part to make Post 11 the leader in the State of Maryland. After attending my first-ever American Legion Convention, it was very interesting, and I learned a lot. There was noticeable emphasis and focus on taking care of Veterans, their families and membership. There's strength in numbers, so please be sure and let us all keep our membership up to date. The renewal process has some changes so if you need assistance, call the office. During the convention, our Post won the following awards: Earl B. Wright Memorial Trophy (Service Of- ficer); PDC Herbert L. Rhodes Memorial Trophy (Rehabilitation Programs); George W. Harrison Memorial Trophy (Website); John Sloan Newsletter Trophy (Electronic & Hard Copy); PDC D. John Markey Memo- rial Trophy (Best Memorial Program); PDC Kenneth Hammer Memorial Trophy (Best Overall Yearbook); William S. McBride Trophy (Largest Membership); Department History Book Trophy (Best History Book); PDC Robert W. Neal Memorial Trophy (Best SAL program in Western Maryland District); and Maryland Legacy Gold Star Donation Trophy — 3rd Place. Adjustments, we have to make them in our daily routines, like the membership renewal process. Leadership is looking to make other adjustments as well and are looking into the cost for goods and services. What you pay for food and drinks have not been adjusted for some time, but what the Post pays has increased in some cases, significantly. What the Post pays for utilities have gone up as well. Adjustments will have to be made to maintain an operational budget. There will be adjustments implemented to current charges for food and drinks. Some price adjustments will be shocking I am sure, while others will be subtle. Let us all work to- gether on the upcoming adjustments to balance the Post Operational Budget. And continue putting forward our best effort to keep Post 11 a wonderful place to patronize for all Veteran's, their families, and friends. One Band, One Sound.

Librarian’s Corner by Barbara Barry Welcome back to the American Legion Post 11 Library! Matt Staden and I have been cleaning up, shelving new books, and getting the library up and running again! It has been a long time and lots of donated books have arrived in the interim. Come upstairs, browse around, sit for awhile, borrow some books. We have more than one copy of many books. If there is more than one copy and it is a book you would like to keep, feel free to do so. Please sign the book out so I can keep track of out- going books. Matt and I are currently working on arrangements to donate some of the books and other written literature to the VA hospital library. Additionally, we will hopefully be setting up an area of “Books To Go” downstairs for members who would like to peruse some of the books and take a book home. We are open to suggestions to provide books to members and others. Summertime and feeling relaxed is a great time to immerse yourself in some good reading!
4 S.A.L. News by: Jeffrey Seiler, Commander First, we would like to congratulate all the elected officers of the American Legion Family and wish them all a great year to come!! The Sons of The American Legion is starting their year off on the right foot already as we have had numerous members already pay their dues. Dues run from July 1st to June 30th. The dues are $35.00 per member and $15.00 for junior members. Please stop by the post and pay your dues and hopefully we can reach our goal of 100% again. This year our Detachment Commander Mr. Mark Fayer of The Sons of The American Legion has chosen “Casey Cares” as his project for the year. This falls under the children and youth pillar of the American Legion. His goal is to raise $60,000.00. This is what Casey Cares does. Helping Families With Critically Ill Kids Enjoy Childhood At Casey Cares, we know how difficult life can be for families with critically ill children. We help keep families' spirits high by arranging programming - whether it's a simple movie night and a fresh pair of pajamas or attending a major sporting event. Casey Cares makes life a lot better by adding a personal touch throughout the year and making lasting memories for families in eight states and D.C. Not once-a-lifetime or once-a-year, Casey Cares knows that the best palliative care comes from continuous, ongoing support. Casey Cares bi-monthly customized programs give families dozens of opportunities to create positive family memories. Many of our patients will be receiving active treatment for years and this will impact their siblings, parents, and their community. We focus on the entire family, not simply the sick child. For families whose faith, relationships, and pocketbooks have been stretched to their breaking points, these programs with a special touch may be the only break many have from hospital stays and doctors' visits. For some, it will be one of the last events they will attend with all members of their family present. While we cannot cure these children, we can create little moments and lasting memories. This is a wonderful program and if one would like to contribute or drop off a set of new pajamas, please see either Jef- frey Seiler or Wayne Fox. There will be no meeting in September due to Labor Day Holiday. Sons Continuing the Tradition of Caring!! Legion Riders By: Tim Smith, Director I would like to first thank all for allowing me to be the Director for the next year. I welcome our in- coming officers and look forward to what we will achieve. We are looking to increase our member- ship numbers and we have some exciting fundraisers to help our ability to server our Veterans and their community. We are selling a raffle ticket for two chances to win $200 worth of MD Lottery Scratch Off tickets for $10 a chance. Total of 200 tickets sold, 100 th ticket drawn wins $200 worth of scratch offs, and the 200th ticket drawn wins $200 worth of scratch offs. See a Riders member for tickets, winners to be drawn August 31st. Fall, unfortunately, is rapidly approaching and that is the perfect time for riding. We will publish our rides soon, one hopefully to Skyline drive for the foliage. Ride safe, and all, please look twice for motorcycles. If you would like to become a member or supporting member, please attend our meetings. You can also contact our Membership Chairman (Jami Clevenger) at jamiclevenger@outlook.com or go to our website. Membership is free, but you must be a Legionnaire, Auxiliary, or SAL member with dues paid up to date. You do not need to own a motorcycle to become a supporting member. We meet on the 1st Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm sharp in the meeting bay. You must renew your membership annually to stay an active member and continue to receive emails. For all members, please contact our Membership Chairman with any changes to your contact status in order to continue receiving up to date information. 8 With only 1,692 sponsored wreaths last year and over 4,000 veterans buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery not every veteran was honored with a wreath on Wreaths Across America Day. Mt Olivet had to select specific areas of the cemetery to cover fully with the wreaths available. Post 11 is asking for your help to ensure that we reach our goal to place a wreath on every veteran’s grave at Mt Olivet Cemetery. Please sponsor one or more wreaths in honor of or in memory of an American hero. For each purchase of a $15 wreath, $5 will be returned to Post 11 for use in our many Legion programs including purchasing flags for placement on Memo- rial Day at Mt Olivet. Purchasing wreaths is easy. Order online through this direct link to the WAA page: https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/MD0490P Click the red button that says ‘Sponsor Wreaths’. Select the # of wreaths to sponsor AND the location you want them delivered to (Location ID MDMOCF). Click ‘Review My Sponsorships’. 9 GOLD STAR PROGRAM What does the GOLD STAR mean? It is the continuance of the Blue Star flag tradition which originated with World War I by means of the Blue Star Banner which is displayed in windows in honor of military persons serving in the Armed Forces at the present time. The Gold Star honors all veterans whose lives were sacrificed in the line of battle during the Great Wars or to any illness which occurred while on active duty. Who is a Gold Star Mother or Gold Star member? They are very special people. The Gold Star and the term “American Gold Star Mothers” are applied to Mothers whose sons and/or daughters have lost their lives during World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon, Per- sian Gulf, Afghanistan, and/or Iraq or while in the service to our country. This also applies to the Gold Star Members who are wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters.
