Engineering Explained Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive Traditional four-wheel drive systems rely on driver input to perform at optimum levels and are often equipped with simple four-high or four-low settings. The new Ford Endeavour’s intelligent four-wheel drive (4WD) system has the capability to monitor, reassess and adjust driving conditions 20 times faster than Intelligent Four the blink of an eye, the Intelligent 4WD System provides dynamic handling and traction. Wheel Drive This innovative system continuously monitors wheel speed, throttle position and System steering wheel angle to determine the vehicle’s handling and the driver’s intentions. After these elements are established, the system automatically adjusts torque split between front and rear axles to prevent loss of traction no matter what terrain you are traversing. Terrain Management System The capabilities of Ford Endeavour’s Intelligent 4WD System are enhanced even further by an innovative Terrain Management System. At the turn of a dial, you can optimize your performance with four distinct driving modes established for different driving situations and terrain conditions. Normal Mode: This setting will transfer the majority of torque to the front Terrain wheels for a smoother ride and will only distribute torque to the rear wheels Management when it is needed. Snow/Mud Mode: In this setting upshifts happen early and downshifts later to System keep RPMs low, contributing to more predictable control on slippery surfaces. Sand Mode: It gives drivers aggressive torque transfer and allows wheels to slip more to better maintain momentum, helping drivers avoid getting bogged down in sand Rock Mode: The setting holds first gear for low-speed control, and fights off wheel slip to keep traction where the wheels need it most. Active Noise Cancellation The Active Noise Control system monitors noise and uses sound waves to block it out. It is inspired by noise cancelling headphones that minimize background noise. The system works best for low frequencies, like droning engines noises and the sound of the road, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to hear someone shouting for you outside the car – or being oblivious to the sound Active Noise of emergency sirens rushing towards you. The system uses three microphones placed around the cabin to monitor Cancellation background noise. In addition, the behavior of both the driver and the vehicle is monitored. These factors are used to inform the opposing sound waves that are created to counteract the background noise. The system doesn’t affect music or conversation volume levels. Electronic Power Assisted Steering with Pull drift Compensation (EPAS): EPAS is designed to be responsive and effortlessly keeping you on track so you have a strong sense of control on the road. How it works • EPAS offers more assistance so steering is light and responsive when you’re Smart driving in the city and parking; offers less assistance so steering is firmer and easier to control when driving at higher speeds on freeways. Steering • Steering adjustments are seamless so drivers experience only an effortless drive that stays on track. Pull drift Compensation: Technology continuously adjusts to conditions that causes your EcoSport to pull to the left or right, such as uneven road conditions and cross winds.
Engineering Explained Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): ABS is a system that detects when a wheel locks and momentarily releases the brakes to unlock the wheel and maintain the rotationof thewheel. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD): EBD is an automobile brake technology that automatically varies the amount of force applied to each of a vehicle's wheels, based on road conditions, speed, loading. Emergency Brake Assist EBA): EBA system that interprets a driver’s braking behavior and automatically initiates full braking faster than a driver ever could in case of emergency. Electronic Stability Control (ESC): Constantly monitors the vehicle’s actual direction versus the driver’s intended direction. The system will brake individual wheels and/or reduce engine power to bring the vehicle back to its intended path. Safer than the Traction Control System (TCS): TCS is an electronic aid to prevent wheel spin Safest and regain grip (traction), either by reducing/limiting the engine’s power delivery, or by applying the brakes on the wheel that’s slipping. Hill Launch Assist (HLA): Holds the vehicle on a slope without rolling away for approximately 2-3 seconds. This allows time for the driver to transition their foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. Enables the driver to safely pull away from a car park ramp, traffic lights or when reversing uphill into a parking space. Also, functions in reverse gear. Hill descent control (HDC): HDC operates in conjunction with stability control (ESC) to provide greater control when off-road, particularly when descending steep slopes. System uses engine braking controls the speed of the descent, if engine braking alone is insufficient to control the vehicle's speed, HDC will slow the vehicle using the braking system. HDC only works in drive (D), reverse (R) or sport (S) mode in automatic transmission vehicles. HDC will be active at speeds less than 35 km/h and deactivated above 40 km/h but will not. MyKey allows you to program keys with restricted driving modes to promote good driving habits. All but one of the keys can be activated with these restricted modes. Any keys that remain unprogrammed are referred to as administrator keys or admin keys. They can be used to: • Create a MyKey • Program configurable MyKey settings • Clear all MyKey features Below mentioned features can be adjusted and customized to suit the Ford level of driver: MyKey • Muted audio when seatbelts are unbuckled • Vehicle speed limited • Speed minder • Volume limiter on audio system • Early Low Fuel warnings • Prevention of turning off some driver assist systems such as Traction Control, Park Aids, Emergency Assistance, Do Not Disturb etc. A tire pressure monitoring system or TPMS is an electronic system for monitoring Tire Pressure the air pressure in a vehicle tire and automatically transmitting a warning to the driver in the event of an under or over inflated tire. Monitoring System transmit real time tire pressure information to the driver of the vehicle System either via dashboard display. Tire Pressure Monitoring helps drivers to properly maintain their vehicle tires life, improves vehicle safety and aid fuel efficiency.
Engineering Explained ENDEAVOUR 4X4 TECHNOLOGY FORTUNER 4X4 TECHNOLOGY • Endeavour four-wheel drive is always active. • Fortuner’s Sigma4 is a selectable 4WD It is an intelligent system that continuously system instead of the permanent 4WD unit, monitors vehicle conditions and which means under normal driving condition automatically adjusts the power distribution the vehicle behaves as a 2 wheel drive, driver between the front and rear wheels. has to manually select the 4 wheel drive option. • Endeavour's intelligent Terrain Management • Fortuner’s 4WD system has only two modes System; it’s an Torque-On-Demand system 4H or 4L. The system cannot customize which shifts torque between the front and power & torque delivery based upon the rear wheels with the most grip to provide terrain. maximum traction and will even send all the torque to a single wheel if it detects the other three wheels have no traction. TMS with its 4 modes can customizes power & torque delivery based upon the terrain. The electronic locking differential is a device housed in the rear axle that allows both rear wheels to turn at the same speed. The electronic locking differential can provide additional traction should your vehicle become stuck. You can activate the differential electronically and shift it on the fly within the differential operating speed range. The differential is for use in mud, rocks, sand, or any off- road condition where you need maximum traction. Rear Electronic The following conditions will affect the electronic locking differential: Differential Lock • The electronic locking differential does not engage if your vehicle speed is too high (above 35 km/h in Normal mode). • The electronic locking differential automatically disengages when your vehicle speed is too high and automatically re-engages when your vehicle speed is low enough. • The electronic locking differential may not engage if you are cornering or if one rear wheel is spinning very fast. With Low Range gearing, the axle spins at a much lower rpm as compared to engine rpm, but with a huge amount of torque. The vehicle therefore moves substantially slower, but with much more power. When driving off-road this is beneficial for a number of reasons. For example, when driving up a steep hill or extreme off-roading a vehicle equipped with high range, or "normal" gears, would lack the power to make it through. However, a vehicle equipped with low range gears would simply drive on because of the added torque. 4X4 Low Range Off-road Display: Endeavour’s 3.2L instrument panel displays important off-road display which help to provide an optimized off-roading experience. Important information like Pitch ; Roll ; Steering Angle & Power-Torque Split. Pitch: Extreme left image displaying side profile of vehicle shows the incline / decline angles of slope been negotiated. Roll: Extreme right image displaying front of the vehicle shows the ramp over angle.
