Flu Service 2020/21 Updates
• Maximising Flu Uptake in Preparation for COVID-19 (C19) Vaccination Phase 1 – As you may
be aware, NHS organisations have been advised to be ready to roll out Phase 1 of the C19
vaccination programme from 1st December 2020. Phase 1 will include people aged 80 and over,
adults residing in a care home, and health and social care workers (NHSE&I has confirmed that
community pharmacy teams will be included alongside all other health and social care workers).
As the latest information suggests that a window of 7 days is required between flu and C19
vaccines, it is important that those patients included in Phase 1 (including community pharmacy
staff), who intend to have their flu jab this year are given it as soon as possible due to this
potential delay required between the 2 vaccines. For more info about C19 vaccination
    preparations see PSNC here.

• Health & Social Care Workers – Just a reminder that health and social care staff directly involved
in the care of vulnerable patients/residents/clients who are at an increased risk from flu, (e.g.
care home staff – see here for full details of eligibility), are eligible to receive the free NHS flu
vaccine under the pharmacy service. It has been reported locally that there are still a
considerable number of care home staff yet to be vaccinated against flu and it is important that
this group of staff are vaccinated to protect vulnerable patients/clients from flu.
As discussed above, health and social care workers are included in the first phase to receive C19
vaccinations so it is especially important that those who intend to be vaccinated against flu, are
vaccinated as soon as possible to ensure a sufficient 7-day gap between the flu and C19 vaccines.

• Call for Help (Bradford Pharmacies) – There is a large cohort of care home staff in Bradford
(approx. 1500-3000) still eligible for a flu vaccine. The Bradford Flu Group are currently looking
into the possibility of using a “Flu Bus” to go to each care home in Bradford to vaccinate staff
and would like to hear from any community pharmacies that may be interested in helping to
deliver flu vaccines from this bus under the terms of the NHS Community Pharmacy Flu
Advanced Service (pharmacies would need to provide their own stock - please also refer to 4.3
of the service specification). If this is something your pharmacy may be interested in please
contact Emma Bascombe, emma.bascombe@bradford.nhs.uk in the first instance. Alternatively,
if you can help support vaccination of care home staff in Bradford in any other way please
    contact Emma.

• Guidance Published On How Community Pharmacy Can Access Government Flu Vaccine Stock
    – Guidance on how community pharmacies can access supplies of flu vaccines procured centrally
by the Government has now been published. The stock will be available to purchase from
wholesalers in the usual way - see PSNC update here and read the full guidance here.
• Importance of Flu Vaccinations for People with a Learning Disability – NHSE&I has produced
some new short film presentations (see here) to raise awareness of the importance of people
with learning disabilities getting vaccinated against flu. This link takes you to a number of easy
read flu vaccination leaflets which may also be useful for patients with a learning disability.

Please see our website here for previous flu service updates.

                                                                                                       1

Pharmacy Quality Scheme (PQS) 2020/21 Part 2 – Primary Care Network Domains
(4&5)
Time to engage and collaborate with your Primary Care Network Community Pharmacy
Representative (PCN Rep). Domains 4 & 5 of the PQS 2020/21 make specific reference to PCNs and
the role of the PCN Rep. Domains 4 and 5 deal respectively with flu vaccination and business
continuity and require contractors to engage and collaborate with their PCN Rep.

Whilst exchanging emails via your Gaggle Group is part of the engagement and collaboration
process, contractors are strongly advised to hold a meeting (online) to discuss these two domains
as a group.

To this end Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire has invited all PCN Reps to nominate a date and
time for a contractor Zoom meeting, commencing this week, for 2 weeks. Please see your pharmacy
NHSmail inbox for your invitation.
                                                                                                  2
If you have not been invited to a contractor Zoom meeting, please contact your PCN Rep to discuss
how the engagement and collaboration process will be managed. Full information about your PCN
Rep can be found on our Primary Care Network website page.

The Interim Foundation Pharmacist Programme (IFPP) is an education programme to support
provisionally registered pharmacists (PRPs). The programme is a structured learning pathway which
helps identify areas of development and provide support through the first 12 months qualification.
Read more here.

The Centre for Postgraduate Pharmacy Education (CPPE) will deliver the IFPP for provisionally
registered pharmacists who work in community pharmacy. The CPPE programme follows the RPS
competency framework and e-portfolio as well as an online learning platform, Canvas, with CPPE
tutor support. PRPs can monitor their progress easily by using the pathway tracker on the CPPE
website and a wealth of community pharmacy workshops are available for learners to book onto
including CPCS.

and PRPs working for these companies will not be able to apply for the CPPE pathway.

Services Information
Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire has a Services Checklist to help contractors with the different
services offered, where to claim and when to claim by. The Services Checklist can be found on our
website here. Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire has also been sending out monthly COVID-19
Services Updates. The list of updates can be found on our website here.

The Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS)
• REMINDER – You May Receive CPCS Referrals When You Are Closed – If a patient can wait until
your pharmacy is open for their prescription, or it is deemed that the minor illness the patient
has called about can wait a few days, then the CPCS referral may be sent when your pharmacy
is closed for you to process once open. See CPCS Frequently Asked Questions here.
• CPCS Training Available – CPD for pharmacists is available to support effective patient-facing
consultations and clinical assessments for a range of common minor illness. See the RPS website
here for information. The feedback from these sessions has been positive and we would
recommend that pharmacists do try and attend one of the workshops where possible.

• GP Referrals to CPCS From 1st November 2020 – the CPCS service specification has now been
updated to include minor illness referrals from GPs as well as referrals from the NHS 111 service.
Before GPs can make referrals, there must be local discussions to agree how this will work. At
present, preparations to support rollout of the GP referral pathway locally are being undertaken
by the NHSE&I regional team and Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire, and we will be
providing further information on how contractors can get involved in due course. Further
information is available here including what contractors can do to start to prepare for local
rollout. For the pharmacies that have participated in the GP CPCS pilot in Bradford, any referrals
received from 1st November 2020 will be managed under the Advanced service (rather than the
    GP CPCS pilot Enhanced service).

• GP Referrals to CPCS: Engagement & Set Up Payment- contractors registered to provide the
CPCS will be able to support local preparations for rollout of the GP referral pathway and will be
able to claim a £300 engagement and setup payment if they undertake a range of actions to get
ready for rollout in their area - see Annex F of the updated CPCS service specification (further
guidance on this will be issued shortly). Locally, only pharmacies that have participated in the
Bradford GP CPCS pilot are likely to be able to meet these requirements currently. See PSNC
    info here for full details.
