In July of 2018, Starbucks made a radical announcement; the global
coffee chain will be permanently banning single-use plastic straws come
2020. The decision followed mounting pressure to counteract waste,
some of which came from a viral video of a plastic straw being removed
from a sea turtle’s nose.

Given the mass platform Starbucks occupies, discussion on single-use
plastics is now centre stage. At present, National Geographic is running a
multiyear story titled ‘Planet or Plastic?,’ a valiant effort to raise
awareness about the plastic waste crisis. Scientifically, experts say that
the planet has been altered so much that we have entered
‘Anthropocene,’ or the Age of Humans.

In the realm of food and drink, businesses large and small are being
forced to respond to this new era of plastic consumption. Whether that
means stocking eco cutlery or allowing customers to bring their own
takeaway containers, the tides are shifting.

In Barbados, single-use plastics will no longer be allowed come April
2019. Therefore, brands need to act fast and find creative solutions that
will entice consumers. This will also demonstrate corporate social
responsibility.

FOOD
FOR
THOUGHT

Brands around the world are coming up with
ways to accommodate a more waste-free
world. In this context, responses that are
creative, innovative and accessible will be the
most noticeable to consumers. For instance,
encouraging restaurant guests to bring in
their own reusable containers could solve for
single-use takeaway packaging.

To best cater to the tourist market,

Restaurants around the globe are catering to a spike in demand for
animal-free dining. Eateries eliminating meat from menus have grown
tremendously in New York, San Francisco and Britain, a country where
3.5M+ residents identified as vegan in 2018, up from 540K+ in 2016.

While vegetarianism was once viewed as a fringe way of life, even the
most mainstream fast casual food providers have had to respond to
growing demands. Of note is the massively popular all vegan chain
ByChloe (pictured right).

In 2018, the historically chuck-only White Castle fast food giant added a
plant-based slider. That same year, TGI Fridays introduced a ‘Beyond
Burger’ made of plant protein. Both examples signal a shift towards the
reduction of meat consumption.

Interest in all things green also comes from the most in-vogue diets.
According to Whole Foods, ‘keto’ and ‘pegan’ (paleo + vegan) are the
go-to preferences for eating in 2019.

On the island of Barbados, there is still a long way to go in this market.
Restaurants that go above and beyond with remarkable menu options
suited to plant eaters will receive the most recognition.

Image Source: Phillip K Smith III

FOOD
FOR
THOUGHT

As more consumers adopt plant based
dining, brands will have to respond
accordingly. In this crowded space, only the
most original food items will stand out.

Given these realities, it’s no longer enough
to have a salad on the menu to appease
diners. Instead, food and drink brands need
to ask: how can that salad (and other plant
options) be taken to the next level?

FOOD AND DRINK: DISCONNECTED DINING

According to Food & Wine magazine, one of the top trends for 2019 will
be phoneless dining. For chef Marc Forgione, this is about “Breaking
bread with your friends without your phone. Along these lines, trying to
figure out interactive or shared dishes to make people interact more.”

Some restaurants have been trying to incentivise phone-free dining. At
New Jersey’s Sushi Lounge, management implemented a ‘Reconnect
Tuesday’ special. In exchange for ditching cell phones, guests receive a
20% discount.

The desire for a moment of disconnection (particularly at the dinner
table) is strong. Google Trends reports that searches for ‘phone
addiction’ have surged over the past five years.

Businesses in the food industry have an interesting opportunity at hand.
Dining is a traditionally social activity, one that managers and owners can
start advertising as a way to connect with loved ones.

In the Caribbean, tourists are searching for the chance to unplug, take in
the scenery and reconnect, especially over a shared meal with loved ones.
Brands can also get in on this trend by creating captivating experiences
that immerse guests in the moment.
