“THE FABULOUS” FIRST GRADE • IN 1ST GRADE, WE AS A TEAM BELIEVE THAT ALL STUDENTS CAN LEARN AND SUCCEED. DUE TO OUR BELIEFS, WE HAVE MADE DECISIONS AS A GRADE LEVEL TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENT'S SUCCESS. • COLLABORATIVE PLANNING • INTEGRATION/TECHNOLOGY • HOMEWORK • PHONICS INSTRUCTION/ASSESSMENT • PARENT COMMUNICATION/CONFERENCING • MEETING THE GEORGIA STANDARDS BY INCORPORATING EQUITY, COMPETITION, PREPARATION, CLARITY, AND COLLABORATION. TALENTED AND GIFTED + A MASS SCREENING OF STUDENTS WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE WINTER (JANUARY) FOR QUALIFICATION IN THE TALENTED AND GIFTED PROGRAM. + TEACHERS WILL OBSERVE ALL STUDENTS BASED UPON THE TALENTED AND GIFTED OBSERVATION PROCESS. THE STANDARD OBSERVATION TOOL IS THE CHARACTERISTIC INSTRUMENT FOR SCREENING STUDENTS (CISS). + IF THE STUDENTS ARE OBSERVED DISPLAYING A CERTAIN NUMBER OF THE TRAITS, ADDITIONAL TESTING WILL BE GIVEN. + MS. CHARLES IS THE TALENTED AND GIFTED TEACHER. 3
EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM & SPECIAL EDUCATION EIP- MS. LESTER OR HOMEROOM TEACHER EIP IS A PROGRAM AIMED TOWARDS ALLOWING STUDENTS TO RECEIVE EXTRA SUPPORT IN THE AREAS OF READING AND MATH. STUDENTS WILL ENTER AND REMAIN RECEIVING THESE SERVICES FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. ELIGIBILITY DETERMINATION IS MADE AT THE SCHOOL LEVEL BY IDENTIFYING THE STUDENTS FUNCTIONING BELOW THE NORMAL EXPECTATION FOR THE RESPECTIVE GRADE AS DETERMINED BY CRITERIA ESTABLISHED BY THE STATE OFFICE OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND THE FULTON COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM. EIP STUDENTS ARE ALSO TIER 2 STUDENTS. SPECIAL EDUCATION – MS. BERRY STUDENTS THAT HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED THROUGH RTI AND SST PROCESS MAY QUALIFY FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION. THESE STUDENTS RECEIVE INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM (IEP) FOR INSTRUCTION AND LEARNING 4
READING/ LANGUAGE ARTS + I. GUIDED READING + III. PHONICS/PHONEMIC AWARENESS + MAKING WORDS + READING GROUPS (WILL START + ONSETS AND RHYMES SOON)/WHOLE GROUP + BLENDS AND VOWELS + FLUENCY, READING + IV. WRITING STRATEGIES, COMPREHENSION QUESTI ONING + PARTS OF SPEECH + SENTENCES AND PUNCTUATION + II. SELF-SELECTED READING + WRITING ACROSS + SILENT INDEPENDENT READING GENRE (INFORMATIONAL, NARRATIVE, AND OPINION ARE THE THREE WRITING GENRES) 5
PHONEMIC AWARENESS/PHONICS IN 1ST GRADE, IT IS EXPECTED THAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN AND APPLY PHONICS SKILLS WHEN READING AND WRITING WORDS, SENTENCES, AND STORIES. STUDENTS ARE DISCOURAGED FROM MEMORIZING WORDS; RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THE MORE STUDENTS UNDERSTAND HOW WORDS WORK AND PHONICS SKILLS, THE MORE WORDS THEY WILL KNOW HOW TO SPELL AND READ. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO UTILIZE THE WORD WALLS INSIDE OF THEIR NOTEBOOKS. PRACTICING PHONEMIC SPELLING IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. 7
MATH ▪ WE ARE CURRENTLY USING THE MCGRAW HILL SERIES. WE INCORPORATE HANDS ON ACTIVITIES AND HIGHER LEVEL THINKING SKILLS TO AID IN SUCCESSFUL TRANSFER OF MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS NEEDED TO MASTER 1ST GRADE CURRICULUM. ▪ MANIPULATIVES ARE PROVIDED AND FREQUENTLY USED TO HELP STUDENTS CONNECT THEIR LEARNING TO REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES IN A HANDS-ON ENVIRONMENT. ▪ MATH IS TAUGHT WHOLE GROUP AND SMALL GROUP, SIMILAR TO READING, WITH EMPHASIS ON SPECIFIC 1ST GRADE OBJECTIVES. ▪ TECHNOLOGY-IREADY, AND ABCYA.COM ARE A FEW RESOURCES THAT ARE USED TO ASSIST WITH MATH SKILL DEVELOPMENT. 8
OVERALL MATH SKILLS CREATING ROUTINES AND USING DATA DEVELOPING BASE TEN NUMBER SENSE OPERATIONS/ ALGEBRAIC THINKING SORTING, COMPARING, AND ORDERING UNDERSTANDING PLACE VALUE UNDERSTANDING SHAPES AND FRACTIONS 9
SOCIAL STUDIES/ SCIENCE/ HEALTH + STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES THROUGH HISTORICAL FIGURES; WHERE THEY LIVE, AND ECONOMIC CONCEPTS SUCH AS NEEDS AND WANTS. + STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT EARTH, PHYSICAL, AND LIFE SCIENCE. THESE CONCEPTS INCLUDE WEATHER, SOUND, MAGNETS, AND BASIC NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS. + HEALTH IS INTEGRATED THROUGHOUT THE CURRICULUM AS WE DISCUSS CONCEPTS SUCH AS: • SAFETY • ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, AND OTHER DRUGS • PERSONAL HEALTH • NUTRITION • COMMUNICABLE AND CHRONIC DISEASE 10
SSS (SEL)/ LEADER IN ME SSS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE THE LEARNING SKILLS AND SOCIAL SKILLS NEEDED FOR SCHOOL SUCCESS. THE MAIN SKILL AREAS IN THE SSS PROGRAM ARE ATTENDING, LISTENING, SOCIAL SKILLS, AND COGNITIVE SKILLS SUCH AS UNDERSTANDING STORY STRUCTURE AND ASKING EFFECTIVE QUESTIONS. 11
ASSESSMENTS + BAS + FASTBRIDGE FOR PROGRESS MONITORING + SIGHT WORDS + MATH UNIT ASSESSMENTS + IREADY- READING AND MATH (COMING SOON) 12
TESTING INFORMATION + THE I-READY DIAGNOSTIC & INSTRUCTION PROGRAM IS A TWO- PART PRODUCT THAT INCLUDES ONLINE ASSESSMENTS AND ONLINE INSTRUCTION. THAT ASSESS MATH AND READING SKILLS AND GENERATES A UNIQUE INSTRUCTION PLANS FOR EVERY STUDENT. 13
HOMEWORK POLICY (PROJECTED TO START IN F2F PHASE) + A HOMEWORK SHEET DETAILING HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEK WILL BE SENT HOME ON MONDAY. STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE THE HOMEWORK FOR EACH DAY AND RETURN IT ON FRIDAY. TEACHERS WILL CHECK THE WORK FOR COMPLETION. HOMEWORK INCLUDES IREAD, IREADY, READING, MATH, LANGUAGE ARTS, AND PHONICS. OTHER TOPICS WILL BE INCLUDED PERIODICALLY. HOMEWORK IS DESIGNED FOR SPIRAL REVIEW. IT SHOULD TAKE NO MORE THAN TWENTY MINUTES FOR 1ST GRADE STUDENTS TO COMPLETE. 14
GRADING FOR 1ST GRADE STUDENTS ▪ STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN NUMERICAL GRADES ON ALL GRADING ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENTS. ▪ PROGRESS SKILLS CHECKLIST AND REPORT CARDS WILL RECEIVE LETTER GRADES. ▪ THE GRADING SCALE IS AS FOLLOWS: 80 – 100 = S 70 – 79 = N 0 – 69 = U ▪ MASTERY IS 80% OR ABOVE IN ALL SUBJECT AREAS. ▪ ALL GRADES ARE POSTED IN INFINITE CAMPUS FOR PARENTS' REVIEW 15

FIELD TRIPS o FIELD TRIPS WILL BE CONNECTED TO A UNIT OF STUDY. o WE DO NOT HAVE ANY PLANNED CURRENTLY. o WHEN THE TIME COMES, WE WILL NEED 100% PARTICIPATION OF PARENTS TO PAY THE REQUESTED DONATION. IF DONATIONS ARE NOT RECEIVED, THE FIELD TRIP MAY BE CANCELED.
