Firefly Mobile Education Program at RCC’s & Maker Lab Workshop Center Turkey Global Grant Project draft – District 2430 Turkey January 2020
The name of the project Firefly Mobile Education Program at Adana RCC’s & Maker Lab Workshop Center in Gaziantep. The type of project: A humanitarian project Area of focus of the project: Basic education and literacy The primary host and international contact for the project: Primary host Rotary Club of Adana-Cukurova, D2430 Turkey İnternational Contact – Rt. Tuncay Coskun tuncaycoskun@gmail.com The main objectives of the project and who will benefit from it? The project consists of two major interlinked components; • Firefly Mobile Education Program in 1 or 2 RCC’s reaching approximately 2,000 elementary school students in one year, • Maker Lab Workshop; educating 300-350 elementary school students per year. Firefly Mobile Learning Unit Education Program consists of short activities compiled from reading, science, mathematics and art education programs implemented at TEGV (The Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey). The programs are implemented with children in an active learning environment with content suitable for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The Firefly Education Program consists of the Information and Technology Area within the Firefly, the Free Activity Area, and the classroom activities to be implemented at school. In this context, Algo Digital Education Program is available to be implemented in the Information and Technology Area. Activities to be implemented in the Free Activity Area of Firefly Mobile Learning Unit Education Program are composed of: • I Read I Play • Enjoy Learning Science RI President Mark D. Maloney’s Dec 2019 visit to a Firefly Mobile Unit in Istanbul, Turkey. • Enjoy Learning Math • Drama Workshop • Short Activity (Have Fun-Learn Hygiene) modules. We are planning to implement Firefly Mobile Education Program at our 1 or 2 volunteering RCC’s in Adana, Turkey. Currently there are 9 active RCC’s in Adana. Most of these RCC’s are formed at the elementary schools located in rural villages with low income families of domestic migration and international refugees. We will be using the infrastructure and a mobile unit of TEGV Foundation. TEGV is a very experienced and
highly reputable education volunteers’ foundation in Turkey (https://tegv.org/eng/). The education program is carried out by volunteers supervising the classes and the children. Volunteers for our project will be recruited from Rotarians, Rotaractors and members of the RCC where the program will be implemented. The volunteers will be trained by TEGV Foundation. The mobile education unit servicing the project will be outfitted with D2430 and Rotary International insignia. Maker Lab Workshop Center in Gaziantep Gaziantep is also heavily populated with low income families of domestic migration and international refugees. Rotarians and Rotaractors of Gaziantep-Alleben clubs will oversee and implement Maker Lab Workshop Center part of the project. The center will be created in Municipal Education Park already allocated to TEGV foundation. Maker Lab workshop educate with the contents constructed through the approach of learning together and by doing, it is aimed for children to get to know maker tools (3D printers, 3D design pens, electronic cards, sensors, motors, recycled materials, etc.) and use these tools for developing a project which will produce solutions to real-life problems. The philosophy of the Maker Lab education program, which is a next-generation learning environment for our children and rapidly becoming widespread in the world, includes: “Build, share, give, learn, play, join, support and change. Produce, not consume!” 2nd-8th grade students participate in the workshop for a typical duration of 90 minutes a day per week for 10 weeks. 300 to 350 students per year will attend the workshop. Measuring Success. Maker Lab Workshops: TEGV has partnered with the Bogaziçi University Professor, Serkan Özel, and Lloyd’s Register Foundation for the measurement and evaluation of Maker Spaces at TEGV. A longitudinal M&E study has been planned for 2019-2022 with the framework of Objectives, Outcomes, Methods and Activities given below. The preliminary pilot phase that includes the preparation and implementation of the pre and posttests has recently been completed and reported. A larger scale pilot M&E implementation with over 3000 children will have been completed and reported by August 2020. The full-scale M&E will be carried out between 2020-2022. • Create, implement and integrate new M&E tools that can serve as best practice models • Conduct pre and posttests with over 10,000 children in 3 years • Conduct focus group interviews with over 500 participating children (returning to students from Year 1 in Year 3, child interviews, etc.): The final M&E strategy will include assessment focused on long-term outcomes, returning to year 1 participants in year 3. • Conduct pre & posttests with teachers and volunteers Firefly Mobile Education Program: The measurement and evaluation of this program has been derived from the same M&E Project described above and designed with the same project team with same objectives and outcomes, with a clear focus on design thinking. However, considering the contact hours and the length of the program, (an intensive course for 2 days- 12 hrs)- this is not planned to be a longitudinal study, and the methods and the reporting vary from the Maker Lab Program. M&E activities are as follows:
• Pre-evaluation: Creativity measure- completing an incomplete visual. • Post-evaluation 1: Creativity measure- the same as above • Post-evaluation survey Location and dates • Firefly Mobile Education Program at 1 or 2 RCC’s in Adana Turkey from September 2020-August 2021, • Maker Lab Workshop Center in Gaziantep Turkey to start in September 2020 and completed by May 2021. Cooperating Organization: TEGV Foundation The reason to partner with this organization and its role: One of the most prominent foundations in Turkey; The Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey (TEGV) was founded on January 23, 1995 by a group of businessmen, directors and academicians, led by Suna Kıraç, in order to “support the primary education provided by the government.” The objective of TEGV is to provide educational programs and activities to help our elementary education level children become citizens who are loyal to the basic tenets of our republic, who are rational, prudent, self-confident, creative, pacifist, respectful of different beliefs and thoughts, and who do not discriminate based on gender, nationality, religion or language. The specific educational programs created by TEGV are implemented by volunteers at Educational Parks, Learning Units, and Mobile Firefly Learning Units established all around the country, and via the “Support Protocol for Social Activities”. TEGV has numerous Firefly Mobile Education Programs serving and design/skill workshop established around Turkey. This project will bring Firefly Mobile Education Program to 2,000 students of RCC’s in Adana. TEGV will train the volunteering Rotarians and Rotaractors whom will be supervising the education. The project will also set up a brand-new Maker Lab Workshop Center in Gaziantep serving its young students. Working with TEGV will ensure continuation, administration and maintenance of the workshop center in future years. The role of host Rotarians and Rotaractors in this project. Most significantly Firefly Mobile Education Programs will be carried out at RCC’s. This will enable active participation of RCC’s sponsor Rotary Club and its members as well as affiliated Rotaractors. Furthermore, volunteering Rotarians and Rotaractors trained by TEGV foundation will be supervising and implementing the project. The Rotary Club of Gaziantep-Alleben will oversee and implement Maker Lab Workshop Center. The role of international Rotarians in this project. International sponsor districts and/or clubs will be our financial partners. They will monitor the project during its course on site. They will evaluate if goals regarding educational, financial, community and sustainability are achieved by the project.
