The Punchestown Festival is considered the grand finale of the jump racing season and
subsequently attracts the best of Irish and British racing talent. Home grown champions Willie
Mullins, Rachael Balckmore, Paul Townend and Henry de Bromhead take on the might of the
British raiders Nicky Henderson and Colin Tizzard among many others.

With 12 grade 1 contests throughout the week the Festival boasts some of the best in running
action and thrilling finishes each season. Reputations are confirmed and crushed at the
Punchestown Festival. Races take place over hurdles, steeplechase fences and on the flat course in
what are referred to as ‘bumper’ races. Unique to Punchestown and steeped in heritage is the
cross country racing discipline which is a real favourite for spectators as the horses and jockeys
meander through the 400 acre site tackling banks, bush fences and steeplechase obstacles.

The racing gets underway each day at 3.40 apart from Saturday when the first goes to post at 2.15.
Each day has what is referred to as a feature race and title sponsors are as follows:

  OVERVIEW
Formerly run as a handicap, this race switched to being a conditions chase in 1999. Four horses have won
this race and the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham in the same season – Sprinter Sacre,
Master Minded, Newmill and Klairon Davis. Klairon Davis, who is the last horse to achieve back to back wins
in this race, did the Cheltenham-Punchestown double when this race was still a handicap.

 RACE FACTS
Sprinter Sacre went off one of the shortest priced favourites for a Grade 1 in Ireland when he was
returned at 1/9 for this race in 2013 when he became the only horse to win this race, the Melling Chase
at Aintree and the Champion Chase at Cheltenham in the same season.
Chacun Por Soi was the last winning favourite of the race and recently odds on favourites have endured
  a torrid time.
The biggest surprise in the recent history of this race came in 1998 when Nicky Henderson’s Big Matt
  won at 16/1.
Leading riders (since 1980) - Ruby Walsh: Micko’s Dream (2001), Twist Magic (2008) Master Minded

The current incarnation of this race came into being in 2007 when it was upgraded to Grade 1 status and its

 RACE FACTS

2015 & Colreevy 2021) while Gigginstown House Stud have enjoyed four victories.
Only two horses have attempted to win both the RSA Chase at Cheltenham and this race – (Cooldine and
Don Poli) and both were beaten.
Over the last decade a number of subsequently top class chasers have contested this race and this group
includes a pair of subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winners in Don Cossack and Al Boum Photo. Don
Cossack could manage only fourth in 2014 while Al Boum Photo looked certain to score in 2018 only to be

Big Shu who went on to win Cheltenham’s cross country chase the following season.

winning start since Zest For Life won in 2013.

share of surprise winners since the Willie Mullins-trained Sivota(Emmet Mullins) became only the second
winning favourite of the race in the last 15 years back in 2010.

RACE FACTS
The 2018 edition was quite notable as Prince Garyantle, trained by Matthew Smith, was the only horse
not trained by Willie Mullins to win on day two of the Festival.
Jockey David Splaine has the distinction of winning the race twice when successful on Beau Michael in
 2013 and Oneeightofamile in 2011.
The first three renewals of the race were won by three subsequent Grade 1 winning riders, Paddy Flood,
 Andrew McNamara and Roger Loughran.

OVERVIEW
Previously this race was confined to novice chasers but the current version came into being in 1999 when
the former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Call (then trained by Raymond Hurley and ridden by
Ruby Walsh) defeated Florida Pearl by 14 lengths with Dorans Pride back in third.

RACE FACTS
Three horses have won both this race and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season: Kicking King
(2005), War Of Attrition (2006) and Sizing John(2017). Sizing John is the only horse to have the
Cheltenham, Irish and Punchestown Gold Cups in the same season while no reigning Gold Cup winner
has been beaten in this race.
This race tends to be won by those at the head of the market although 20/1 chance Follow The Plan
prevailed in 2011 when the odds on Kauto Star pulled up and the following year served up another 20/1
surprise when China Rock prevailed when the race was run on a Saturday owing to torrential rain earlier
  that week.

since 2004 while lack of experience is no barrier to success as novice chasers have won two of the last
  four renewals.
This race is popular with the bookmakers as Just (2006) is the only winning favourite of this race since

The following year it was upgraded to Grade 3 level and 2018’s renewal has worked out very well with
nine of the beaten contestants having won at least once since then and the second and third (Black
Tears and Tintangle) both went on to be placed in the mares novice hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival

 OVERVIEW
This is the longest race in the Irish National Hunt calendar and is easily one of the most popular as this
four and a quarter mile marathon presents its contestants with a remarkably varied array of obstacles
from laurel hedges, drop banks, Aintree style fences and stone walls.
In all the runners will jump 35 fences and there is one stable above all others to consider when it comes
to the La Touche with Enda Bolger having notched up 14 victories. Five of those wins were supplied by
the legendary cross country performer Risk Of Thunder who actually won the race on seven consecutive
 occasions.

 RACE FACTS
Despite the length of the La Touche the race has a habit of serving up tight finishes with the last four
editions being decided by margins of a neck, a head, three lengths and a neck.
Donie McInerney (2018), Ger Fox (2012) and Ken Whelan (1995) are the only three claiming professional
jockeys to have won the race since 1990.
Barry Cash, Patrick Mullins, Nina Carberry and the late JT McNamara are the only riders to have won the
La Touche on more than one occasion since 2000.

RACE FACTS
2018 this race played host to one of the most memorable displays of the season as Faugheen
recaptured his best form on his return to three miles to trounce the reigning Stayers Hurdle winner and
stablemate Penhill by 13 lengths in a race where Willie Mullins supplied the first three home.
The record breaking Hurricane Fly made his final ever racecourse appearance in Ireland in this race in
2015 when finishing second to former Champion Hurdle winner Jezki.
In 2014 the brilliant racemare Quevega also made her final racecourse appearance in this race when she
finished second to Jetson in her quest to win the race for the fifth year in a row.
The last horse to win both this race and the Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham in the same season was the
David Nicholson-trained and Richard Johnson-ridden Anzum in 1999. By contrast Shuil Ar Aghaidh won
this race in 1992 (when it was run as a handicap) before going on to win the Stayers Hurdle at
  Cheltenham the following season.

RACE FACTS
There is hardly a more fiercely contested staying handicap hurdle in the domestic calendar with a 24
runner turnout being the lowest in the last five years.
This race has acted as something of a nursery for future National horses with the subsequent Irish Grand
National hero Rogue Angel finishing second in 2013. Pleasant Company, who was second in the Aintree
Grand National last year, was third in this race in 2015. Meanwhile American Grand National winner Jury

OVERVIEW
This is a race that is unique to the Festival and the Irish racing calendar with the conditions stipulating that
it is for certified hunters aged four years old and upwards that are the bona fide and unconditional property
of farmers farming land in the Kildare Hunt District and in their possession since 1st January. The race is
commonly known as “The Farmers Race”.

RACE FACTS
The Bishopscourt Cup has its own place in Punchestown lore and has played host to some Festival
regulars with the Denis Cullen-trained Shin A Vee amassing a remarkable record over the last decade.
He was a 50/1 winner in 2009, finished second in 2010 and didn’t return to Punchestown until 2013 when
he was fifth. In 2014 he took second before recording victories in the 2015 and 2016 renewals and he
signed off at the age of 14 in 2017 with an honourable second.
In that same period Shin A Vee only ran in seven other races or Point to Point races

RACE FACTS
Undoubtedly one of the best handicap chases run in Ireland each season.
The Mullins-trained Rule Supreme won this race in 2003 and as the new National Hunt season in Britain
had already begun he remained a novice in England for the duration of the following season which
enabled him to win the following year’s RSA Chase at Cheltenham.
The Mullins-trained Kemboy shouldered joint top weight to victory in 2018 before going on to win the
Grade 1 Savills Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas and the Punchestown Gold Cup thereafter.
This race has also developed into the foremost trial for the Galway Plate and the winner of that race has
contested this Grade A handicap in 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2011. However, each one of those
Plate winners has been beaten in this race before going on to win at Ballybrit.

RACE FACTS

The current incarnation of this race first took place in 1999 when Istabraq added it to his Champion
Hurdle triumph the previous month. Since then Hardy Eustace, Hurricane Fly (twice), Jezki, Faugheen
and Honeysuckle have followed up a Champion Hurdle success at Cheltenham with victory here.
Willie Mullins first won this race with the novice Davenport Milenium who added this race to his victory
in the Grade 1 two and a half miles novice hurdle which was run two days previously at that time.
More recently Mullins has dominated the race, amassing seven victories between 2010 and 2017. The
victory of Wicklow Brave in 2017 was pivotal in the trainer seeing off his great rival Gordon Elliott for that
  season’s trainer’s championship.
By far the biggest surprise in the race’s history came in 2007 when the Harry Rogers-trained Silent
Oscar, ridden by Robbie Power, struck at 20/1 when defeating a field that included the likes of Hardy
Eustace, Macs Joy, Harchibald and Iktitaf
Leading rider - Ruby Walsh: Davenport Milenium (2002), Hurricane Fly (2011-2013), Faugheen (2015),

RACE FACTS
Once again Willie Mullins is the utterly dominant trainer here having won the race ten times since 2002.
His winners include the subsequent French Champion Hurdle heroine Nobody Told Me, the subsequent
Stayers Hurdle hero Nichols Canyon and the Cheltenham winners Vautour and Mikael D’Haguenet.
The race has been won by a host of short priced favourites but it has thrown up the odd 16/1 winner in
Dortmund Park (2018), Spirit Of Adjisa (2011) & Ballygowan Beauty (1998).

  Elegant Lord (1996), Castle Mane (1999), Whyso Mayo (2006), Salsify (2013), On The Fringe (2015 & 2016).
On The Fringe further enhanced his position as a legendary hunter chaser as in both 2015 and 2016 he
completed the remarkable treble of winning at Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown. The reception
to his 2016 victory remains one of the most memorable in the Punchestown winners enclosure.

RACE FACTS

announced her immediate retirement from race riding after partnering Antey to a last gasp success.
Even though this race doesn’t boast the same status as some of the other novice hurdles at the meeting
it has produced some top class winners.
The subsequent County Hurdle winner and Champion Hurdle second Arctic Fire was successful in 2014.
The previous year the brilliant Un De Sceaux made all the running for an impressive success on just his
  second Irish outing.
