9 DAREBIN’S STREET ART HOTSPOTS Have you seen some of Darebin’s vibrant street art? With longer days and warmer nights, now is the perfect time of year to explore Darebin’s impressive murals created by Melbourne’s leading artists. Darebin’s street art is supported by the Street Art Subsidy program, an innovative project that aims to brighten the street scape and prevent illegal graffiti by commissioning professional artists to create quality street art in locations that have previously been targeted by graffiti. From 2017 to 2018, the Street Art Subsidy program provided funding for multiple projects across Darebin (see map), as one initiative to reduce the impact of graffiti on our community. Council is now seeking community feedback to help develop the new 2019 – 2023 Graffiti Management Strategy. This strategy will respond to Darebin’s current graffiti culture and community expectation of how graffiti should be effectively managed across the municipality. Tips for preventing graffiti • Remove graffiti within 24 hours to prevent it from re-occurring. • Avoid providing blank walls with lighting which creates a canvas for graffiti. • Use garden planting such as fast growing vines or spiky plants like bougainvillea. • Use dark coloured materials or bands of colour on surfaces. • Utilise anti-graffiti coatings. • Use textured or rough surface to make it difficult to apply paint or pens. • Maintain your property. Poorly maintained properties attract graffiti. To provide your thoughts on how unwanted graffiti should be managed in Darebin, go to yoursaydarebin.com.au/ graffitimanagement or phone 8470 8888
